"My first memory was nothing. Not literally nothing, but the idea of being consciously nothing- my form was made of nothing, my thoughts were made of nothing. I was less than an idea, more than a being. It was a complex thought, but it was a simple feeling. I didnt really understand anything- I had no real experiences, but just.... feelings. My second memory was becoming something... everything really. For less than a second, longer than an eternity.... Its difficult to explain. But it told me enough that I could feel that I had a point- a purpose. That I wasnt just a piece of ether, or some odd sentient gas. I think that was a worry of mine early on." The voice was both aged and timeless, young and old. And mostly, it was tired. The boy looked around for the voice, but only saw the sand of a destroyed world. His parents had spoken of others, but his entire life he'd only seen them. "Im over here." the voice said. and the boy saw the darkness move. He was slightly scared, but reminded himself that he'd come out here for this exact reason. "I dont think it counts as suicide if you've run out of choices...." it mused. "Probably why you can hear me. Oh well." it sighed. "A few more eons or so wont matter. Come here, kid. You'll feel better by the fire." Looking around the shadow that spoke, the boy saw that there was indeed a fire- burning on a strange, brown substance. "Its wood, kid. From trees." Tree? What was a tree? "Its a... this is difficult... um. Its a unintelligent life source, that uses the sun, hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon to survive, and it helps create air. Or it used to.... before they had to break everything." Who was this person? Why did he know so much? These thoughts swirled in his head. "Next one is probably, 'how is he responding to my thoughts?', right?" The boy thought about it and nodded. "Well, as to the first two, I'll get to that in a bit. You dont want to talk, so I just listen to your thoughts. You dont care, I can tell right away, so I didnt think to say anything." The proof was there already, so the boy just nodded. "Now, who am I?" A nod. "The last. Oh, you mean my name?" A nod. It felt like the man was teasing him. "Hmm... Call me Silent. What, I talk too much for that name? Well, what do you think?" The boy snorted. The man talked too much to be 'silent'. "'Shadow'? Oh, the cloak. It works just as well. I am more of a 'shadow' now." The man, Shadow (it fit him the boy decided), said. Shadow turned to the boy. "Well, if Im Shadow, who're you?" The boy shook his head. "What do you mean 'its unimportant.'" He shook his head again. "Oh, your name is 'Unimportant'?" A nod. "Nice folks you've got." Another sigh from Shadow had the boy give a curious look. "My folks? They're probably in the same place as yours." The boy tilted his head. "Well, yes. I do have siblings. And two kids. well... had. No, dont apologize." The boy felt bad. He'd made Shadow sad, like mommy and daddy. "Oh, kid... " a sigh, and the boy felt a hand ruffle his hair. "You're just like Lu at that age." "Kid, you realize that you're the last living thing right? The last thing, literally. No, Im not alive technically. You just dont have a firm grasp on what I really am." He tilted his head again. "An angel? Meh, close enough. How would you like to stop being unimportant?" The boys eyes widened in fear. "Oh stop that, Im not talking about your name, though that would probably change too. How would you like to do something important. Something that even I couldnt do?" The boy looked at him hesitant. "I wont force you- it has to be your choice... but Im tired of losing and being alone. I was always just a bit too slow, a bit too trusting." The boy looked at him quizzically. "Yeah, that's probably more than you understand. I promise though- I wont let you stay alone. I'll be with you the entire time." The boy hesitated... and then nodded. "Alright then." Things began to darken, and the boy felt tired. "When you wake up... you will be everything. And you will be nothing."
