So... I never aspired to rule in any way, just as a disclaimer. Things just... turn out strangely in times of war.
My village was at war with a village of dark elves. Ok, simple enough. But our king was dying. I suspect poison, but we don't know. Before he left us, he spoke to me in private. He offered me the crown. He said that I'm so different, I'd lead the village into a new era, where wars weren't raged based on racism. I refused the crown. I know and have always known that I don't have near enough experience or patience to be king over anything. And the king was glad that I refused. He was testing me. However, he gave me his necklace, which has three circles in the front. One says "peace", another says "prosperity", and the other says "fortune". He said that those three words were his blessing for me, and he appointed me Guardian of the village, and said I was to hold more power than anyone else except for the king himself. He decreed that it would be a new tradition for me to train someone and pass on the necklace when I die, similar to the way the king passes on his crown.
Anyway... the king then told me to appoint Glem as king. To backtrack a little... Glem is the head of the first family in that village to show me kindness. He's a bit of a spaz, which makes him fun to be around, but it also made me question the king's wisdom in choosing him. He merely said "Glem is wise enough to know when to have fun." But I knew Glem would refuse, because we had spoken of this matter previously over a delicious feast, and he wanted me to be king. The king said that if Glem refused, I was to seek out Qal'la and Kyaithe, and appoint the next ruler to the best of my judgement.
As I suspected, Glem refused the crown, although I didn't predict how angry he would be that I refused as well. So I sought out Qal'la. The entire village knows her, so she wasn't hard to find. She's an odd one; unlike most wood elves, she always wears white, and she has... I can't think of the name, but she has basically ladder balls as weapons. The metal balls (no gutter minds) are actually sheaths for knives. She's an expert with them, but what's most astonishing about her abilities is her amazing telekenetic power. (As a disclaimer, I believe her to be of this world--someone like me.) Anyway, after speaking with her, I found that the rumors were true, and that she had astounding wisdom as well. She's also one of the few elves who has abandoned the ways of racism. Her physical appearance is also... different. Whether by scars or birthmarks (or both), she looks old. Why is that an issue? Think about it. Elves don't age past a certain point. So the fact that she looks old definitely makes her stand out.
I also sought out Kyaithe, who I actually found in the company of dwarves. I only needed a short talk with him to know that there was no way I would let him be king.
A) He spends more time with dwarves than with his own kind.
B) He believed that he deserved the possition of king before I arrived.
C) He believed that "king" became an empty title anyway when I was made Guardian.
He was young and brash, and unwilling to learn his place. So I decided to make Qal'la queen after the old king died.
And then the king left us... Hey, I didn't say he died! I was the only one who knew of his plan: he left on his own to go to the dark elves. When he arrived there, the dark elves were shocked. Their minds were blown (as well as ours) that he would be brave enough to go into enemy territory alone to end the war diplomatically.
The king died there.
Inspired by this sacrifice, Glem decided to reconsider the offer for the crown, viewing differently the king's wisdom and courage. And so Glem became our king, I became the Guardian, and Qal'la and Kyaithe became the adhmira (there is no real translation for this word, but the closest thing would be generals).
