a few days ago, a friend and i were having a philosophical discussion on the principals of good and evil. he introduced me to an interesting paradigm, I'll call it the shadow theory. this paradigm is based on the principal that everyone thinks that their way of thinking and behaving is correct or justified somehow. that they think themselves "pure" but that this is a facade, that behind every innocent person, there is a shadow. a negative, an alternate ego that tells the person to do things that are wrong and unjustified. that there is always that malevolence behind every person.
i respectfully disagree. i believe that there is no line at all between this shadow and the innocence, they are the same part of the same thing. they are all part of the human mind and therefore, are both completely and totally natural and true to the most basic sense. for example: there is the me that tells me, "i love dizzypirate, i should show that love through sex" and there is the me that says "i love dizzypirate, but i should wait until we are both completely and totally ready" then there is the me that says "i want her to have sex with me now". you may think you can tell the difference between them, but they are ALL me. i respect them all, but i will only ACT on one of them. that, is the line. not the conflicting thoughts, not the evil thoughts not the good thoughts, the line is when i act on them. that is what determines if we are good or evil. thoughts mean nothing. actions are what write who we are.
