Alexa brushed her light brown hair, looking in the mirror. She had hazel eyes with yellow rings around the pupils. She had freckles from the bridge of her nose to the end of her rosy cheeks. She put her brush down and smiled at the looks of her hair. Then she rummaged through her makeup bag until she found dark brown eyeliner. Alexa started shaping her eyes. Shelly, her sheep dog, barked loudly as soon as Alexa’s mother, Jessie, entered the room. Alexa jumped and ruined her eyeliner, then groaned with frustration. “Phone for you dear,” Jessie said, handing her seventeen-year-old daughter the phone. Alexa groaned again as soon as Jessie told her it was Madison. Madison was a beautiful, popular girl with long, silky, black hair. She had eyes of a cat, and her eyes were the color of the night sky filled with stars. Her skin was flawless and as light and bamboo. She has the looks, she can walk, and she can dress. Alexa, on the other hand, could only hope to be as gorgeous as Madison. Alexa grabbed the phone and became more frustrated. “Hi, Madison,” Alexa said through gritted teeth. “Why did you call this time?” “Hey Alexa! Everyone else wanted to go to the secret bar. Do you remember that one alley down the corner?” Madison said and giggled mischievously. Alexa hung up and threw the phone across the room. “That’s the third time she’s been trying to make me go out with her stupid brother!” she screamed at the top of her lungs. She trudged out of the room to hers, slamming the door behind her. Grabbing her pillow, she threw herself onto her bed and screamed in the pillow as loud as she could. “Honey, what’s the matter?” Jessie peeked through the door, then walked in and sat on the edge of the bed. “Nothing, Mom. It’s nothing,” Alexa replied with a sigh. “Well it has to be something. I just heard the door slam.” “Okay, fine. Madison is trying to get me to go out with her older brother. And do you think that’s fair? No.” Alexa sat up and Jessie put her hand on Alexa’s shoulder. “Well, why don’t you start hanging out with other kids, now?” “Madison is one of those cool kids, I don’t think I want to be seen with those dorks.” “Well that girl, what’s her name? Susana. She likes you, and do you remember you two used to be best friends? And that slumber party when she sprayed you with her brother’s Axe?” They both laughed. Then there was a long pause. Just then, Alexa remembered something. ‘There’s a dance on Friday and I still don’t have a date yet!’ she screamed in her head. She had a certain person in mind to ask to the dance. His name is Jake Parker, a cute, mischievous, seventeen, about to be eighteen, year-old boy. Alexa got up from the bed and ran out the door taking her mom’s car keys with her. Jessie only smiled. “That girl might get in trouble one day if she keeps hanging out with that Madison,” Jessie said with a sigh and half a smile.
