Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey aka Frederick Douglass, was born a slave in Talbot County in Maryland. When still a baby, he was separated from his mother, Harriet Bailey. She died when Douglass was about seven years old. In 1837 while in Baltimore, Douglass met Anna Murray, who was a free African-American. They soon married and obtained his freedom, Douglass escaped slavery on September 3, 1838.Douglass combined the North Star with Gerrit Smith's Liberty Party Paper to form his paper called Frederick Douglass' Paper, in 1851. Douglass along with Smith and Lysander Spooner came to agree that the United States Constitution in fact was an anti-slavery document. Douglass was one of the most famous black men in the country by the time of the Civil War thanks to his views the condition of the black race and women's rights.
