CHAPTER TWO
Background music: ???
Alexandra Jessovski stormed out of the audition room in fury. Again! This was not the first time it had happened... She had been refused to audition for the main female role of Anastasia in "The Legend of the Stone Bridge". Not beacause she wasn't talented, because she was actually a very good actress, but because she was blonde. After years of films with blonde actresses, Hollywood had grown tired of the "beautiful but dumb blondes" and now demanded gorgeous brunette or asian actresses for main roles in movies. If a movie starred a blonde actress, it was sure to be kiked off the "Movies you gotta see" list. Producers, seduced by Alexandra's flawless acting skills, had often suggested to dye her hair so she could be in the film, but she would hear none of it. She was a blonde, yes, but a smart one and would not alow herself to be manipulated.
She walked furiously down the street to the spot where she had left her car. Her red buggy was not bad, but she had preferred the black limousine she used to have back in the days when she was the most wanted actress in Hollywood. Those days were long gone. She now regretted to have donated most of the millions she had made to charity, because now she had to work her butt off at the local library just to pay the bills. Alexandra sighted, and turned her key to start the car. As soon as the engine started, she noticed a little red light flashing in front of the wheel. She was low on gas. Great! Like she needed something else to go wrong!
***
Seems like she did need something else to go wrong. She had come to her appartment just to find a voice mail from her boss. She was saying she was so sorry, but the library budget had been cut short and she had to firer a couple emloyees. She was one of them. In compensation, her boss had told her she had found her a job as a waitress at the Grand City Hotel. She had to be there in 1 hour. Also, she had to wear a wig, just like she did at the library, so no one would see she was blonde. Alexandra sighed again. She hated all this blonde racism thing. But what could she do? She rapidly took a shower, got dressed, put on her wig and started to walk toward the hotel, wich was only a few blocks away.
***
Walking towards the Hotel, Alexandra could not help but to think. What is the problem about being blonde? She noticed a girl walking down the street. She could tell by the roots of her hair she was a natural blonde, but the rest of the hair was of a shiny chocolate brown. Alexandra grew frustrated. Most of the blondes had died their hair to escape the shame and put downs. It sadened her to think so. If it would have been her way, all the blondes would have united to fight this injustice. Wait, no. If it would have been her way, blondes would have been respected in the first place!!!
Looking around, she noticed a strange scene. A little drive-thru, situated on one of the smaller streets that departed from Main Avenue, had its big "Open" sign besides th window. The cusious thing was, there was no one at the cash register. Alexandra checked her watch. Her shift started in half a hour. She had time. She curiously walked to the drive-tru and looked around. True to her intuition, the place was deserted. She was about to take a lokk in the cash register to verify if anything had been stolen when she saw the corpse. The old man was lifeless on the floor, in an akward position, and with a bullet hole in his forehead.
Alexandra screamed, but heard no sound comming out of her mouth. A gloved hand was held on her mouth, and a female voice urged her to be calm and not make any sound. Alexandra turned around to reply, but froze as she recognised the face.
***
Alexandra walked shakily to the hotel. She knew she was late, but that didn't matter now. She couldn't help but replay the previous evnts over and over in her head.
She barely noticed the responsible yelling at her when she entered the Hotel backdoor. In a doze, she put on her uniform and went to serve 1981 red wine in the ballroom.
