( Title be: With the Family)
Terika had gone down several twisting alleys, doubled back six times, and gone out the back door of three taverns just to make sure no one was following her to the one place that could only be entered by those with the king's blood. Well, it was usually only they who were patrons of the place anyway. It wasnt very well lit, and the air had the musty smell of stagnation to it. As her eyes got used to the darkness, a voice said, "In the back." She just nodded in the general direction of the voice, and slipped into the back. Sitting there were at least seven members of the various branches of the Mage King's line. Merfolk, Dragonkin, Fey, the king had gotten around in his centuries of life. "Hello Cousins." she greeted them to announce her presence. In their own various ways they greeted her, but the only responce that could be heard by ears was from the Elvenkin, "Hey 'Rika." As she sat down, all eyes were focused on her. "Main Branch. Why have you called usss here today, and on such short noticess?" "We all could be doing our jobs- you know, missions?" The group grumbled but was attentive. Terika sighed slightly. This was the problem with the Family- they got along to an extent, but racial differences ran deep, no matter how slight. However, the news she had might improve tensions... but also might send them spiraling out of control. "Guys, quiet. We know that we can trust each other, that's why we get invited and are here. Petty squabbles can wait- and lets be honest, do any of us take any jobs that cant be put off for a few hours at the most?" Said the elfkin, again. His name was Leaf- common enough in human terms for an elven name, though in his language it was much more precise- and sounded better in Terika's opinion. He had gotten control of the group, and there were even apologies muttered. "Thanks." she said to Leaf. Turning back to her other cousins, she cleared her throat. "Last time I was here, I brought Eryan here with his freshly hatched dragon." A few mutters, neutral in tone, were emitted. They weren't sure what to make of the boy, but at least he was family. Good enough for now, in Terika's opinion. "He had to renew his license, so we came here again. Last night he took care of that." she gave a pause for drama. "However a suggestion was made to him by Hrej Steelbender." At this, the noise quieted. Hrej wasnt known for making suggestions- not even to friends. Everyone knew Hrej didnt like anybody- even other Dwarves were a little afraid of the old Dwarf. After she was sure she had their attention, she continued. "For many years, we of the King's line, of any race, have been denied access to guilds, and many of the higher profile jobs- citing a 'lack of experience' or even a 'lack of ability'. Hrej has offered a change in that to Eryan." She let the idea sink into their heads before saying it out loud. "He offered the idea to start a guild." The shock in the room was evident. The intake of breath, the wide eyes... followed by the rush of speech. "Impossible, why would they let us now-" "Truly? Hrej? He might be able to-" "Why Eryan? He's just a whelp! How could-" Again Leaf stepped forward, and the noise quieted down. "Not impossible, Hrej has the connections to make it happen. And despite being a whelp, Eryan is more like Hrej and the other non-humans than any of us- you know this." he said quietly. "In the end, it comes down to if we are in or out for this idea. While we havent been able to do many large jobs, our names are out there, and do carry weight. It comes down to this- are we in, or out? We, no matter how far apart, are family. Of all the bloodlines, we are the closest related and know- if we were in danger any of the members sitting at this table would come running at the first sign of trouble. Do we turn down this opportunity to gain what we've been denied, or let it slip through." Terika couldn't've said it better herself. Leaf continued. "The eight of us here must decide, each for ourselves, whether we want to take this chance. I for one will go-" he gave a sheepish grin. "I need the money and a place to sleep." There was a chuckle. "Im in." said the Mer, stepping into a lightened area for the first time. The light glimmered beautifully off of her blue scales, and her sea-green eyes shone with hope. The dragonkin snorted and grinned. "Im not sure about this, but I'll give it a shot- just to see old Hrej actually do something for someone. It's a once in a life time chance." Various murmurs of assent were given until only Terika was left, with everyone staring at her. She looked at them confused, and Leaf cleared his throat. Suddenly, she understood their looks. "I brought it up, of course Im in." she said, saying it with that little tone of 'duh' to her voice, because it should've been obvious. "We are agreed then?" Assents again, from all the gathered family. "Then Terika, let our cousin know that he's got himself a guild."
