Why do I care so much? Because there aren't enough books like this, and it's getting even harder to publish original things instead of things that look like what every body else is doing. Obviously, the book isn't out yet, so I haven't read it, but the samples I've seen are well written, and more then that, this is a story I haven't seen told yet, a voice I haven't seen in either YA or adult literature. I was a scholarship kid in the northern version of a school a lot like that, and I was paying attention. (I had a knack for blending into nigh invisibility back then, and guys would say things in front of me, forgetting I was there, or maybe not caring because I never told). The glimpses I've seen and the bits I've heard about make me think of the things I only heard whispered by boys who thought they were alone, and I think that it would be a good and important thing for boys like certain of the ones I grew up with get to see people like them, get to hear things said out loud, that they were scared to say when they thought anyone was listening, truths about race and sexuality that need speaking.
I can't wait to read this book, and I'm only sorry the chances of me having the money this month are slim.
