"You're going to have to run the gym challenge."
Professor Oak and Zane were sitting around a breakfast table when Oak had decided to drop this bomb on Zane.
Zane continued eating, if he stopped he'd be rushed out the door.
"Red has already made it to Cerulean, and is on his way to Viridian. You need to go and make a name for yourself to draw the ROCKETs out. I'll give you a starter, but Eevee are rare so you have to leave them here. You should leave Arina as-"
"No."
Professor Oak looked at Zane incredulously. "What?"
"Arina decides if she goes or not. Zee and Yami would stay here anyway, they arent suited for battle, and they evolved yesterday while you were discussing things with the other researchers and aides."
"They evolved without stones?!" Oak exclaimed.
"Zee about noon, to a purplish two tailed form, which is a psychic. Yami became black and yellow, entirely different from a Jolteon. She seems to have picked up a few strange attacks as well. The Pokedex doesnt register either of them."
Oak was easily sidetracked until after lunch, giving Zane time to discuss with his pokemon the assignment he was placed into. Zee and Yami were a bit disappointed, but agreed in the end.
That afternoon, Oak took Zane to see the starters.
"Brock, the Pewter City gym leader, is the closest open gym to Pallet. He uses rock types, so a Grass or Water starter would be easiest, but you know your method of battling better than I do." He released the three starters. "There is Charmander, Squirtle, and Bulbasaur."
Zane looked at each carefully. In all honesty, he'd rather just travel with Arina, but he knew her rarity would get too much or the wrong kind of attention.
After a while, he picked up a ball at random.
"Charmander, huh? Well, he's yours now. I'll call you on the phone once I have more information."
Zane nodded and started to head out.
"Oh, and Zane."
Zane turned back to the professor.
"If you have to do something Dark, dont get caught."
Zane gave a stiff nod and left.
