The seeds of friendship
Sowed in the back of an sixth grade classroom
A promise to commitment, love, and hardship
Has bloomed and ripened
Into a mass of tall pines, palms, and evergreens
Fruits trees, vines, and flowers
So close to each other and yet still reaching out to others
Far-reaching and seemingly never ending
Thriving on the mere company of the others
And the times shared between
The years have passed
We have survived
The fires of puberty
The plagues of drugs and violence
And here we stand
Seemingly impenetrable, seemingly unbreakable
We have withstood the test of life and nature
And emerged stronger
The forest cannot be destroyed
Or so we thought
But the axes of reality, sharpened by practice, surrounding us
Cannot be avoided

An acceptance letter to Harvard
Fells the clever palm
Crash
The call of service
Lures the noble oak
Smash
An internship oversees
Draws away the seeking grape vine
One by one
The loggers have come
One by one
We have fallen

There are none
