Chapter 4
Bree opened her eyes slightly, wakening up. She noticed that the room was lit only by the sun, so it had stopped raining and it wasn’t that late. She rubbed her eyes and moved her finger tips down to her aching sinuses, then up to her temples, where a headache began.
‘Great,’ Bree thought, swallowing. That hurt. ‘I’m sick.’
Bree stretched her aching body, the stiffness from being curled up for so long. She ran the events over in her head. Nothing big; mostly vomit, then the ship, then Yuki picking her up. She remembers falling asleep in his arms. That was all, though.
Bree realized she was covered up by two comforters, so Yuki or Rita must have known she was going to get sick.
Sabrina tried to throw them off, but she was too cold. The red head rested her head back down, listening. There were yelps coming from the kitchen, followed by snarls and sharp but low woofs.
“OW! Stop Rita! I told you already-”
“Grr. Snarl, gruff!”
So Rita was lecturing Yuki. Brina smiled, and got off the couch, wrapping both comforters around her body, like a cloak. Tip-toeing to the kitchen, her ears caught Rita’s human voice that hissed, “What the hell is wrong with you? She’s sick now because of you!”
Yuki, with his voice coated with defeat, whispered sadly, “I know. But I didn’t think it as going to rain. Especially when we went flying-”
“You WHAT?!” Rita shrieked. Her arms flew into the air, and her eyes widened angrily. “You knew how much she hated flying, but you took her anyway, even when she told you to stop?”
“Yes, but it-”
“Idiot!”
“I know, but she seemed okay after I apologized.”
“Did she vomit?”
“Yeah.”
Rita hit the back of Yuki’s head. Bree frowned and shivered. This was not Yuki’s fault at all. She gripped she wall now, to support her weight, for the room was spinning.
“Where did you even take her, Neko?” Rita asked low, but still pissed.
“The dock,” Yuki said vaguely, shrugging of the details.
“To see what, exactly?” Rita folded her arms and tapped her foot impatiently
“Oh, nothing of consequence,” Yuki mumbled, looking at the door way as if it were the gates to Heaven.
“Yuki Neko, I swear to God-”
“To see a pirate ship ok?” Yuki admitted.
Rita’s voice came out strangled. “You. Took. Her. To see. A pirate. Ship?!”
“I forgot Rita! It was accidental! I feel horrible for it!”
“You should!”
“I do! I didn’t mean to! And she didn’t seem mad at all!”
“She was sparing your feelings, jackass! Do you really think that she was okay that you didn’t seem to care that she didn’t want to fly? Or that, even though you knew-”
“But I-”
“-that she couldn’t be around them? She did care you idiot!” Rita spat.
‘Not true,’ Bree thought. She he heard a clanging sound, then Yuki choking out the words, “Rita-can’t-breath!”
Bree stepped into the kitchen, meaning to be brave and strong looking. Instead, she wobbled, and then coughed. Rita’s eyebrows where pulled down, her cat fangs bared, and her arm tightly around Yuki’s neck.
Yuki had his hands to her arm trying to pry it off. His face was red, and his feet kicked uselessly as he tried to pull himself up.
“Rita,” she mumbled.
Rita looked up, and her face went from anger to being relived in no time flat. Her dark face lit up when she smiled warmly. Dropping Yuki, she glided over to her, embracing her like a mother would a daughter.
Yuki, who was now coughing on the floor from being choked, looked up, and smiled sadly at Sabrina.
“Sabrina, you’re up,” Rita said.
“I am,” Bree replied. Brina shrugged Rita off and walked to the place where Yuki was still practicing breathing on the floor by the sink. Wrong move; the room tilted oddly and Bree clutched the counter of the kitchen sink, supporting herself, so not to fall on the wizard.
“Come on, honey. You need to sit down,” Rita caught Sabrina and walked her over to the kitchen table.
Once she sat, Sabrina put her head on the cool surface and shivered. It felt so refreshing! The wooden table smelled of maple and had unique designs in it. It was cool and soft so Bree closed her eyes, forgetting her aching body and throat.
She felt Rita rubbed her back, gently placing her hand on Sabrina forehead.
Brina saw crossed her arms, glaring at Yuki. “I knew you had a fever.”
Bree lifted her head staring directly at Rita. “It’s not Yuki’s fault, so don’t blame him. And I know you just nodded, but you mind said, ‘Yeah right. Such a lie.’ Rita it’s not; I promise. I didn’t walk back, or else I would have-” she paused to sneeze into her arm, and then went on, “been dead on the street. And the field trip to the pirate ship? No effect on me.”
Yuki, who she just now noticed had sat down across from them, was staring at her open mouthed.
Rita shook her head. “So you didn’t fight against the flying?”
“Not at all,” Sabrina lied.
“I got to get back to my shop. It doesn’t close until six, and its four now,” Rita said, ‘
Clunk, click, went the door.
Yuki was still staring at Sabrina.
“You know, bugs could easily fly down your throat if you don’t close you mouth,” Bree laughed, lifting her finger and telekinetically moving the bottom jaw upward.
Yuki laughed too, his smile still apologetic. “I’m sorry you’re sick. But thanks for making Rita stop that choke hold. Thought I’d die from the amount of oxygen I wasn’t getting!”
“Anytime,” Rita said, her aching head dragging itself back to the maple table.
“I really am sorry,” Yuki said, but it sounded like it was coming through a tunnel.
Before her eyes slipped shut she managed to smile and say, “You’re fine.”
