Lived & Died Where Worlds Collide
Fingerprints
As we raced down the empty roads in the backseat of an SUV, I reached up and touched the cool window with my fingertips, trying to feel the moon from so far away. That cold, lifeless rock caught in our gravitational field with no light of its own. Only the sun's mercy keeps it.

And us.

When I pulled my hand away the fingerprints remained, glowing dimly and imprinted on the moon. She leaned over me, discarding her seatbelt and laughing as she studied the loops and whorls meant to be mine alone.

"Here, look." She pressed her fingers onto the glass above mine and smiled, "See? We're the same."

I know we're not the same, because we don't feel the same things. Because our experiences are different. Because our futures aren't identical.

But how could I say that? How could I sit there next to her and still be cynical? Why would I want to steal the smile from her face?

I don't. So instead I smiled and leaned back on her, trying to relax. "Yeah, I guess we are."
