Not to my surprise, I was not allowed to perform at the BOA Grand National Championship this year. Mr. Montoya (the band director) gave me the option of coming anyway and watching but I refused because it meant I would miss school on Thursday and Friday. It killed me to see the band leave without me, especially because I had done my best to learn all of my music despite my three weeks of straight absence. However, my mother had already booked a hotel so we left on Friday to watch the band perform in preliminaries. I later called Matt, our pit instructor, and told him that the pit sounded fantastic. He asked if I had watched the live online video and was surprised to hear that I was there in person. My mother and I watched the band perform again on Saturday morning for semi-finals. Following the performance, I ran out to our truck and greeted all of the members of the pit and also helped them load our equipment. I was surprised at how enthused all of the freshmen were to see me there; I was practically suffocated. My mother and I spent the next few hours at a local mall to shop and eat. In the spirit of my band's colors, I had my nails painted yellow and black xd . Each minute that passed was agonizing because we had predicted in October that the band would not make finals. I was overjoyed to hear that we were wrong. I was especially happy for Vinny, our section leader who is also a senior. Our other pit senior, Mack, also received my congratulations. When the competition had ended, I went to the school that the band was staying at for the traditional pizza party. As I greeted all of my friends and saw their finalist medallions dangling around their necks, I realized that I have no proof that I was in this marching band for the entire 2008 season. I am still considering not attending our band banquet on the 25th simply because I was never in a single competition.
I came to as many practices as I could, but I never contributed to one performance.
