As a kid, his father(a British archeologist)came home for his b-day & gave him a special gift from Egypt, a golden pendant called the Sennen Ring. Since then, he's been reclusive & people stay away from him cuz everytime he plays games with his friends, he expects finding them later in comas. When Ryo(u) transferred schools to Japan, he met up with another pendant, waking the full power of the 5000-old psychopathic spirit who'd been possessing him & letting him hear the laughter and responses; the ring attached itself into him. In Duelist Kingdom, his mother and little sister died in a car crash back home; wanting to keep them safely back, he never told his new friends. Though he died for them 1 or 2 times, he keeps getting seperated from the gang when it counts. Was once ordered to leave them, told his heart was too dark/impure; he cried & yelled "I hate him!" as we see the spirit smirking in him. The gang made a friendship-vow together, Yugi, Tristan/Honda, Joey, and Tea/Anzu, W/O him, that they refer to often; only when on-screen is he mentioned by them. Ryo's rarely seen: either possessed, unconscious, asleep since the spirit uses him til his body's drained, in the hospital, etc.
His "yami," or alter-ego, was an Egyptian tomb robber 5000 years ago. As a kid, his family was too poor to eat so he robbed tombs. One day, he returned home from a raid to his village burnt to a crisp, bodies everywhere. Pharaoh's father had sacrificed them to Ra in exchange for the Mill' items, which would lock darkness & keep order. The kid was misinformed as to who did it; insane, he developed a love for blood. A mix of hate towards Yami(Pharaoh) & a pact with the creator of the Shadow Realm, the idea that cuz his village was sacrificed for the them they should be his, & the quest to open something called "the dark door" gave him a drive he can't now recall the full cause of to collect all the Millennium items, mainly Yami. The thing he's known for by his host's friends is his liking for sending people to the Shadow Realm & using the fact that he uses the same body as him (Ryo as a hostage most of the time by a voice in his head) so any harm would directly get Ryou. Once, during the Battle City finals, the spirit was using this techique. At the last minute, he took back the vessel & told Malik (a control-freak Egyptian who can possess people's minds/hearts) he knew what Malik did to his heart pre-duel; Malik had possessed his small heart W/O Yami Bakura's previously knowing & he had a "change of heart" (as Ryo's favorite Duel Monsters card is called) about using his hikari/host as a hostage when he was so weak at the moment, the first and last glimpse of a conscience in the spirit. He didn't go on to the afterlife with Yami Yugi(another spirit)in the end, becaming trapped in the darkness of the ring for eternity. (A bit harsh, in my opinion, even if he had killed a couple dozen people back in his time and in the present.)
