Double Edge Circuits/ Cellphones are the Death of Communication
My social teacher had a little lecture today about how the technology we have today is a double edged sword. Okay, so it actually wasn't a lecture, more like a crappy five minute current events with just reading off the article. Point is: technology is consuming our lives.
Email, IM and other types of long distant telecommunications can be used for long distant relations, such as from one country to another. These methods take a lot less time and physical space when sending and storing, as well as it's a lot easier to access in this day and age than an actual hard copy letter. Then again, there's fax, so i guess a written letter would work too. BUT...
How many people use it mainly for distant communication? I don't mean that that person you're connecting with over MSN or something similar lives in a different part of your community, or a different part of the city, I mean a reasonable distance that would make it abnormally rare for you to visit in person. We use this more as communication between people who are in a relative close proximity that they could make it possible to meet up and just talk.
This technological communication is also costly to your wallet if not used properly. If you are willing to pay to talk to your friend that lives a few houses away from you and have a whole conversation for hours, go ahead. But when you could just get together and talk for FREE, the second choice would be more sensible, right? I remember once, two of my friends were across the hall from each other. Instead of talking normally, or even take one step to the other side of the hall, they would text each other.
Another thing i don't fully understand why people start to whine and complain when their phone or Ipod got taken away for a little amount of time. You don't NEED them to live. These little necessities that we've grown are screwing up how we conduct our lives. It;s not like once the radio waves from your phone dissipate, your heart will stop beating. Besides, if you're stupid enough to loose that privilege, then it's your fault : D
Anyways, i sound a bit like a hypocrite since i do own a cell, Ipod, and computer and I'm always with one of said items, but.. I've grown tired of the need for constant noise blaring in my ears, when i could hear my surroundings. Music is my life, but turning into background noise, especially today's music... that's another issue for another day though : P I just think that if we all had a little less technology, we could all be more socially benefited and happy : D
