But can empathy be a real emotion?
Sympathy Can. I can feel sorry for someone for days at a time.
But empathy? How can any one person decide that they know what something feels like to someone else? I mean, here's a scenario (By the way isn't true, I just made it up)
Girl 1: Hey!
Girl 2: Hey.
Girl 1: What's wrong?
Girl 2: My parents told me they were getting divorced last night.
Girl 1: Oh. Wow. Well I know how you feel, My parents got divorced when I was 2.
--
Okay, Let me explain this;
Quote:
Girl 2: My parents told me they were getting divorced last night.
Girl 1: Oh. Wow. Well I know how you feel, My parents got divorced when I was 2.
Girl 1: Oh. Wow. Well I know how you feel, My parents got divorced when I was 2.
So yes, they both were in the situation of their parents getting divorced. I get that.
But its not the same situation.
Because you don't understand the whole story.
Maybe one girl had been abused by her Father for 5 years now and Her mother was an alcoholic.
And The other had the perfect christian mother and a perfect catholic Father.
So the feelings will be different for each.
OR maybe for a girl didn't see it coming from anywhere and all of a sudden her parents are separated.
and the other girl Pretty much saw it coming and could prepare herself for it.
OR -even further-
The First girl had gotten them separated when she was two.
The Second when she was 13.
~Different Time, Different Feelings~ Following me here?
Even if the scenarios DID turn out EXACTLY the same, it still would contain different feelings because they are each different people and have different memories.
And this is the same for any other situation. Try it. I dare you.
So here I am, once again, pondering this complex (or maybe simple) concept of Empathy. Could anyone help me comprehend this?
