Seiichi Kimura sat quietly by himself as he tried to complete his homework. He was a good student, one who worked hard, but he sometimes felt that this much work was a waste of time. It wasn't as if he could use all of his knowledge after graduation, but there was always one reason for coming to school and that was to see Lucine. Annoyed at the current math equation, Seiichi ran a hand through his brown hair and then tried to focus on it. He knew the answer and he knew that he knew it, it was just the cute outfit that Lucine had worn the other day was stuck in his head. The school's cultural festival was a week ago, and since everyone considered the red head one of the cutest girl's in the class she had dressed up as their mascot.
As he sat there in the classroom he heard the sweet, beautiful voice of the girl he liked. He exhaled deeply, blowing the hot air onto the page angrily. “What?” he asked, able to hide the love from his voice, although his voice was still gentle. What bothered him though was how he felt that he could be nothing more than a big brother figure to Lucine.
“How are you doing on the worksheet?” Lucine asked as Seiichi looked up at her, he forced a laugh out.
“Fine, nothing to worry about,” he told her with a roll of his eyes as Lucine sat down to help him. She stared at the problem and then nodded, “Do you get it?” he asked surprised as the girl smiled what Seiichi would describe as the perfect smile.
“Not at all,” she told him before putting one hand on top of his. Seiichi felt his heart beat in his chest and then looked away trying to hide his reddened cheeks. “Look, if you take deep breaths then I'm sure you'll figure out the answer Seiichi, knowing how smart you are it's definitely possible.”
Seiichi looked at her and bit his top lip still wanting to know what to do with the hand which was placed delicately over his own. Lucine smiled at him with a quiet giggle and stood up. She looked away and went to the window as Seiichi watched her do so. “What's up?” he asked putting a hand to his head once she didn't reply, “Come on Lucine, you know your silence bugs the hell out of me.”
“I know,” she grinned, “I was just thinking.” In her eyes there shone slight sadness which in some ways made Seiichi's heart freeze, when she was sad it was like the worst feeling in the world. It was as if he wanted to do something for her, but soon he wouldn't be able to.
“It's only a few months until we move onto the next year,” she told him before sighing, “You're going to be turning eighteen soon too meaning that you're going to graduate.” She looked at him with a nostalgic gleam in her eyes and a melancholy smile on her face. “Promise we can still be friends?” she asked sadly
Seiichi opened his mouth immediately in reaction, “O-of course!” He looked down before hearing Lucine speak again, this time not to him, but to someone she could see out of the window.
“Akira!” she called as Seiichi growled hearing the name, most people thought that he truly detested the blonde teenager, but it was more out of a sign of respect for him and insecurity about himself. He could see all the positives about Akira, not that he would want to admit those virtues aloud. “Akira!” she called again as Seiichi reached out and pulled her wrist back taking her away from the window.
“Hey!” Lucine exclaimed as she saw Seiichi's desire to have her near, but what she saw more than that was the annoyance.
“That guy again?” he asked as Lucine nodded, “What do you have a crush on him?” he challenged her, hoping in his heart that that wasn't true, it was just his own insecurities that made him make such a statement. He stood up and she didn't reply, “Do you like him?” he asked angrily.
Lucine flinched, “No, it's not like that,” she argued back nervously although she was blushing over the thought, she wasn't sure what she felt for her friends, but she knew that it would be hard to pick one over the other so she wanted to choose neither.
At that Seiichi put the homework he had yet to complete in his bag and looked at Lucine, he lifted a finger up and then pointed to his bag, “Watch that,” he seemed to order her, although it wasn't exactly like that. With that he left to approach Akira. “Hey!” he called out as Akira held his hands up in defense.
“Seiichi?” he asked surprised, not in the mood for a morning argument. Akira was one of the most popular guys at the school because of his calm, collected attitude. There were even some girls who compared him to a prince because of his kind nature, and of course his looks helped in that way. “What is it?” he asked as Akira took a deep breath.
“How long have you been going out with Lucine!?” he snapped as many of the girls turned round amazed to see the two students fighting like this, there were even fan clubs for them because not only were they attractive, but they had qualities one had to love.
“Me?” Akira blinked, “Going out with Lucine?” he asked as Seiichi growled frustrated.
“You know exactly what I'm talking about!” he yelled, raising attention between them. Akira looked down trying his best to keep his image at this school, having Seiichi yelling at him for something that wasn't even true might hurt his reputation, and he relied on teacher recommendations for university, that and good scores on the entrance exams.
“Listen,” Akira smiled serenely, “I'm not dating her.”
“Are you lying to me?” Seiichi asked raising an eyebrow, he looked at Akira and threw a punch at him, which Akira successfully and elegantly blocked. There were a couple more punches before Akira looked around glad that none of the teachers had seen this fight.
“No,” Akira told him, “I think that she has someone else that she loves, that's what she told me anyway.”
Seiichi's eyes widened in horror about this, at least Akira was his friendly rival, at least he had spent some time getting to know the guy. If there was someone else who wanted Lucine's heart that he knew nothing about then what chance did he have? “Who?”
“I'm not allowed to say,” Akira said honestly as Seiichi blinked. He went back to the classroom where Lucine was still looking after his things, whilst at the same time watching the fight. Seiichi stopped in front of her and then looked at her eye-to-eye.
“Seiichi!” Lucine exclaimed, “What's wrong? I tried to hear your conversation with Akira-kun, but...”
“Lucine,” Seiichi asked as he bent down exhausted from the short fight, “Who do you love?”
Lucine blushed deeply and she waved her hands in front of her, she was attempting to deny what was going on. She did love somebody that was true, but that somebody was more of a brother to her, he didn't want anything further to do with her, at least not romantically. “I can't say...” she whispered.
“Because it's Akira right?” Seiichi challenged her. Lucine shook her head.
“It's you,” she squeaked quietly as Seiichi's eyes brightened and he beamed at her. Part of him was not able to believe that this had just happened. As he stood there he blinked in wonder.
“Really?” he asked as Lucine kissed him on the cheek with a playful smile.
“Really,” she nodded.
