Prologue
Over five hundred years ago, the god of warmth and light, Wiremu, and the goddess of purity and kindness, Katheros, created a dimension similar to ours. They named it Daichi, The Great Land. Soon after they fell in love and were engaged to be married. However, the god of evil and darkness, Ki, was jealous of their happiness. He created a curse that included two parts. The first part was the banishment of warmth from the world. It caused thick, rolling clouds to darken the skies of Daichi and create a never-ending rainstorm. The second part was a deadly disease that became known as The Cold. A person that was sick with the disease would first turn a pale blue. Even their hair and the whites of their eyes would change color. Then paralysis would set in and they would begin have trouble breathing and their hearts would have to struggle to beat. Their hearts would eventually become entirely paralyzed and cease to beat. It was a slow and extremely painful death. The first thing Ki did with the curse was to have the sickness attack Katheros. It was unknown why he decided to attack her instead of Wiremu, his greatest rival. Katheros died and Wiremu was wracked with grief. It was then when Ki’s curse seemed to take full effect. When Katheros died, the order in the world was disrupted. The trees turned gray and the sun became a rare sight, but only a few rays would manage to make it through the mass of clouds. Making fire also became impossible for the people that inhabited Daichi and The Cold killed hundreds upon thousands of people. No medicine could combat the disease and all that became sick were considered to be terminally ill. There was, however, hope. The scriptures and legends told of a cure for The Cold that Wiremu had created after Katheros died. People called it The Warmth. However, any descriptions of The Warmth were vague. It was said to reside in a place where the sun never stopped shining and was surrounded by fire. But no one knew what shape The Warmth took, but it was said to always be changing. Many had gone off in search of it, but none of them were ever seen or heard from again. It was said that Ki personally saw to their deaths. Although many people lived in Daichi, their villages were almost always isolated. People rarely had any contact with anyone outside their area. The only time anyone really had any contact with other villages was when someone in search of The Warmth passed through their town. Still, people were very suspicious of outsiders. There were dangerous human-like creatures that inhabited their world. There were all sorts of legends about entire villages being slaughtered by these creatures. It is here, in this strange world that our story begins.
