Resident Evil 4 is an atempt to get an aging, yet much-loved series back on its feet, and after playing it, I can safely say that this series is going nowhere soon. First of all the gameply, no more crappy camera angles means much better gunplay. The battles are pulse-pounding as in some enemies come at you and can kill you in one hit. You have to be quick and think on your feet. You have to know where you shoot first. And another cool function is that the A button acts as an action button. You can push ladders down as enemies climb up on it, jump out a window, and most importantly, kick enemies when they are stunned. Some times when you shoot enemies in the head, they just wince in pain, making you feel like that they are much stronger than any normal human, but as they are wincing, you can run up to them and give them a kick to the floor, or the kick will make them explode in beautiful crimson confetti. Another great thing is the fact that anywhere you shoot on an enemies body they'll react to it. You shoot them in the leg while they're running at you, they'll trip and fall, giving you some air to breath. Shoot them in their hand, and they'll drop their weapon, etc. And then there's the inventory system. It's so much bigger this time around, you can carry almost everything you find. But you still have to switch weapons only from the pause screen, this can really slow down the action to a screeching halt, but that's just nitpicking. Also, when a foe drops dead, he'll leave ammo, health, or money so there's no conservaton like the older games. Speaking of the money, this is something that struck me as odd: there's a merchant where you buy your weapons! I just wasn't expecting something like that to ever come across in a Resident Evil game. But the best thing is the enemy A.I., since they aren't zombies this time, your foes are amazingly smart. They'll guard the areas that you seem to shoot the most, watch your aim and get out of the way before you shoot them, and gang up on you if you're stuck in the corner. The controls are the same, but it fits better for this kind of game. Now the graphics. This is by far the best looking game I have ever seen on any console, it really shows what the Gamecube has to offer. The enviorments are breathtaking, very gritty. And the enemies look great as well, you can see their wrinkles as you shoot, and the cutscenes are very well-made, everything goes smoothly. The story pretty much plays a back seat to the action. You are Leon S. Kennedy of Resident Evil 2 fame, it's been six years since Racoon City and Umbrella's gone. He's now a agent for the U.S. government and this is your first mission: to investigate the kidnapping of the president's daughter who was last seen in a remote European village. As you enter, you come across mad villagers, and now you must escort the presiden't daughter, Ashley and find out who or what is behind all of this. The villagers don't seem to be human. The sound in this game is as good as the graphics. The score of the game is chilling, when you hear the music for an fight, your pulse we'll go way up. I guarentee it. The villagers speak in Spanish, and the way they talk we'll scare you. It's very grisly. By far the best Resident Evil yet, this game shows what the Gamecube can do, and just 'cause it's a lot more action than puzzles, doesn't mean that you won't be scared. Even if you aren't a Resident Evil fan, this is fun for any kind of gamer. Get it. Now. 100%
