Haven't you noticed that Naota would always say that he hates sour drinks and rather drink sweet ones? Though, sometimes throughout the series, he would sometimes drink the sour drinks... I just realized, there's a metaphor in there.
Oh, FLCL. How I love thee. heart
At the end of the last episode, Haruko tells him that he's still just a kid. Kids naturally like sweet things. They could go through their younger years of life through rose-colored glasses; they still have optimism. However, the older we get, the more we learn about life and our perspective - our reality - changes. Everything isn't so sweet. It can be bitter, cruel, and sad.
So, there's a difference between being a kid and being an adult.
A kid will stick to the sweet drinks and find it hard to gulp down the sour ones.
An adult can take the sour ones without complaint.
I heard something along the lines of that last week Thursday, when I was talking with my friend while I wiped away tears. I realized that metaphor as we stared up at the big blue sky the next day, watching clouds go by. I remembered it yesterday as I drank my hot coffee in the car, wondering when the sugar will kick in.
So I'm not grown up just yet. There are times when I can take the bitter taste of coffee, but I'll need some cream and sugar. There are times when I can listen to songs and happily sing along, but then there's one that just hits a little too close to home. There are times when I just can't help but break down and scream and cry, and run as fast as I can as if I can fly away from it all. My friend said that sometimes, you have to take the good with the bad. I asked her, "What if the bad outweighs the good, though?" ... She said that you just have to learn from it. There are times when I just can't handle the bad things in life. But I have to, at some point. You can't ignore it.
I remember Fuki one time saying something along the lines of "The older you get, the more questions about life you have." However, along the way, some of your questions are answered. I have something else to add to that. As you get older, life becomes less simple. You won't be able to look at things as wonderful as the stars, the clouds, or a rainbow the same way. The world isn't as peaceful as you thought it was. Everything doesn't always end with a "happily ever after". It makes me want to stay a little kid. But alas, I can't stop myself from aging. I can stop myself from growing up.
Fuki said, "An adult is someone who does something they really don't want to... and does it well." And I believe in his definition a whole lot. There are people that are legally adults, and yet are terribly childish. And there are those rare young adults who show a lot of wisdom and prove themselves to be ready for adulthood. There's one thing I think should be added to the definition: Someone who isn't ignorant or arrogant. Someone that is open-minded, and can take in both the good and bad no matter what.
Okay, I'm done rambling. Wow... the things you learn from what seems to be just a crazy, random, and pointless anime.
