The Hanging Tree

One of my biggest fandoms is The Hunger Games.

(Although Divergent is still the best! <4)

And since I, have a thing for anything related to horror / mystery / suspense, the song that Katniss' dad sang when he was still alive really caught my attention.

The song's title is The Hanging Tree.

Listen to the song here.

Here are the lyrics.

Are you, are you

Coming to the tree

Where they strung up a man they say murdered three?
Strange things did happen here

No stranger would it seem

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.

Are you, are you

Coming to the tree
Where the dead man called out for his love to flee?
Strange things did happen here

No stranger would it seem

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.

Are you, are you

Coming to the tree
Where I told you to run, so we'd both be free?
Strange things did happen here

No stranger would it seem

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.

Are you, are you

Coming to the tree

Wear a necklace of rope, side by side with me...
Strange things did happen here

No stranger would it seem

If we met up at midnight in the hanging tree.

For the people who haven't read the books yet, I shall explain why this song is so haunting.

In the first stanza, it's about a man hanged due to his crimes.

In the second stanza, it stated that the man whom was hanged, warned his lover. The first thing that came to my mind, was to run away from his execution, to prevent her from seeing his death before her eyes. Or maybe he was worried that the girl might be forced to be hanged as well, for covering his crimes.

In the third stanza, the song starts to become confusing, because it says that "Where I told you to run, so we'd both be free" , when in fact she was initially told to flee, while he dies. But then he must be seeing his death as freedom, so that covers the confusing part.

Then in the last stanza, the haunting feeling completely sinks in when he says "Wear a necklace of rope, side by side with me..." It was as if when he said they would both be free, he was expecting his lover to share his fate by also being hanged, rather than literally run away from the place.
