((This is my very first attempt at a horror story. I can only write when I'm 'inspired' and right now, I'm inspired to do a horror story. Wish me luck~))


It's getting dark... thought Rowan, glancing up into the noon sky. It was purple, streaked with orange clouds that ran as far as the eye could see. He quickly looked away, he couldn't bear looking up when the trees loomed so high over him, with their long, twisted arms branching out with disgusting, disfigured fingers that clawed the sky. Crows and ravens sat at the tips of every tree's hand like black leaves, replacing the old ones that had fallen off long ago, back when the trees were alive. They were dead now, their trunks gone black with fungus growing up and down it like vines.

Rowan walked with his eyes on the ground, staring at the muddy trail and listening to the squishing sound of his small boots as they sank into the mud with every step. He suddenly stopped, fear widened his eyes. A chill ran up his back like an icy finger when he heard another noise. The sound of the crows and ravens all taking to the sky at a single time, shrieking and crying as if mad. He watched them all leave, and looked around. Nothing but trees and darkness. He tried to keep his mind clear, he knew thinking about what scared the birds would only make him paranoid.

He thought of home, of the fun he had playing with his friends today. They played tag, raced, and pretended to be knights, whacking at each other with sticks while laughing and smiling. The memory made him smile, but it faded. He hadn't moved yet, but he heard the squishing noise of someone walking in mud. He turned, and saw no one, and the woods returned to its eerie silence once more, the only noise to be heard was the sound of Rowan's heart thumping loudly in his chest.

He took a step, slowly, cautiously, and listened to the mud squeak beneath him. The noise repeated behind him, only a few feet away. He turned again, and, just as before, saw no one.
