Born to a father who was a somewhat noted poet, and a maid of the household. Since the wife of the house has no idea of her husband cheating, the husband sends the maid to live her life elsewhere. When he is born, Shadow is left on the steps of an orphanage, where he is discovered by a member of the staff. At the young age of thirteen, he manages to escape the orphanage by secretly creating a hole in the wooden fence boards, running for the rough side of town. He soon meets up with the other homeless people that live under the bridge, an older man helping take care of him. After unsuccessfully trying to steal a purse from a woman, Shadow escapes into a nearby alleyway. Feeling that he had gotten away without too much attention, he turns and runs around a corner of a building when he runs into a tall, shadowy man before him. Taking money from his own wallet, the man places it in Shadow's hands and tells him to run home. Intrigued by the stranger's unusual gesture of kindness and indifference to the previously failed theft, Shadow tags along with him. After following the man one night, Shadow accidentally gets himself lost in an alley, and is ganged up on by several people. When he wakes, he discovers that his face, eyes, and hair have become unusually altered. Too scared to be seen by others, he takes to hiding in alleys and living in cardboard boxes, where he meets his furry friend for life - Captain Sputnik. One night when out searching for food in the dumpster nearby, the shadowy man approaches him again, this time holding out a hand to help him down. Shadow is reluctant at first, feeling ashamed of his appearance, but the man insists. Shadow soon befriends the man, named Jacques Valentine, who is the mastermind of a gang of notorious thieves. Enjoying Shadow's eagerness to learn, he teaches Shadow to become a true thief. Years later Shadow's only friend, Jacques, decides that it is time for him to give up the business and find a new home somewhere out in the world. Shadow sees his friend off on the boat, waving from the pier as his friend slowly disappears into the distance. Reading from a newspaper vending box one morning, he later learns that his friend was soon found by a rival gang and was fatally wounded. Now that he is over 21 years of age, Shadow is more knowledgeable at his business and lifestyle. Though not working directly for any single employer, Shadow is more of a thief-for-hire, waiting until someone sends for his service. He may not be the best or the most intelligent thief, but it his willingness to perform for others that makes him feel like a great choice. Shadow is against living a rich lifestyle and often does not care for sums of money, he just accepts as much as it takes to get some food and pay off bills and buy tools. He never wants to attack people to steal from them, rather he waits until they are not at home or not paying attention before making his move, and would only defend himself if necessary. Even then, he is against the use of hand guns.

Born to a father who was a police officer, and a mother who was a veterinarian. Their way of living was rather ordinary; the father went to work night shift in town, while the mother went to work in the daytime at the vet clinic. The money brought in was enough to keep them financially sound and never had to want for anything. Instead of earning allowances, the boys had to help with chores for their earning, which went to college savings. When Dominic was seven years of age and his brother only two years old, their mother had suddenly decided she was getting a divorce, and left the family. The single father continued diligently to provide for his sons without question, sending them off to school before heading out to work, then being there to meet them at home before they arrived. Sometimes when he had to cover extra shifts to cover bills and expenses, the father would enlist the aid of the grandparents to help babysit the boys. Due to extreme violent outbursts of gangs in the town, the boys were forced to spend more time with their grandparents. Dominic soon turned ten, his younger brother five years old. While he and his brother spent the night at the grandparents' home one night, a phone call alerted the sleeping residents. The father had been fatally wounded in a surprise gun battle. With heavy hearts and tears in their eyes, the grandparents had to relay the news to the young boys. Without hesitation, the grandparents agreed to adopt the boys and continued to raise them. Unsure of what to become when he grew up, Dominic just gave in to the idea that he would probably become an astronaut. The skies and clouds had always fascinated him to begin with, though his mother would not have allowed it. His younger brother, however, became determined to become a police officer just like their father. Dominic paid no mind to his brother's ideas, instead insisting that some day he would change his mind over time. At the age of thirteen, Dominic was helping his eight year old brother get some groceries for their grandparents. The grandparents agreed that the boys knew well enough of what was right and wrong, and that they only lived a few blocks away from the store. The boys did not mind the walk, but rather took pride in it, considering it one of the many ways of paying kind respects to their family. As they neared the store, a ring of gunfire forced the boys to stop in their tracks, a tall person in disguise running out of the building nearby. Without sparing a moment of thought, the robber shoots straight at the boys with a single shot before taking off and jumping in a getaway car. The gunshot had wounded both Dominic and his younger brother, both of them getting transported to the hospital in an ambulance. Dominic managed to survive the attack, but his younger brother was not so fortunate. After undergoing several surgeries and prolonged bed rest, Dominic had to spend time on physical therapy classes to get better. After paying respects to his little brother's grave, Dominic vows that he will make all thieves think twice before crossing his path, and that one day, he will make the cold-blooded murderer pay for what he had done. Following his determination and his word, Dominic took criminal justice classes in school, where he always made good grades. When he headed off to a criminal college to study further, the professor accepted that the youth was definitely smart in his work, and even provided tutoring lessons. However, he was forced to drop out of college due to insufficient funding, but took this with a good mind and light heart. As a part-time job, Dominic enlisted as a police officer at the same department as his father. With time claiming his grandmother and then his grandfather as the years pass, he sold the house and saved up the money, to which he moved into a smaller, more manageable home. After a string of successful arrests and public assists making a good record for him, Dominic got promoted to a full-time police officer. Cutbacks in the department the next year caused many people to get laid off of work, but a superior informed Dominic of a detective who was looking for a partner. With some careful consideration, he agreed that the position will better suit his needs, though he would still be working with the police department. Under guidance and training with a detective, Dominic was soon declared as the best that had been seen in years, and fully accepted the job. With the new assurance that things were going to get better, the older detective retired, leaving Dominic in charge. Though he is assigned new partners sometimes, Dominic is very strict in his ways and demanding on his missions, which causes tension and uneasiness between him and new recruits. Eventually it is decided by the department that it is for the best he work alone until he changes his own ways.
