She knew everything was over. Everyone and everything was gone. She looked around at the barren, lifeless land. The wind whipped her hair around, stinging her face. The sun beat down one her. There was ice as far as she could see. There was no village, no children running around playing with dogs, no husband to hold her hand. It was like nothing had ever been there.
She had to do it. There wasn’t anything left for her. The world was cold and empty. She could only see gray and white. Her heart ached for her child, her husband, but she knew she would never see them again. Pain from missing them would follow her everywhere she went. There was no escaping it, no matter where she ran. She looked around before lying down, closing her eyes for the final time. The numbness was already starting to spread over her body. Cold seeped through her clothes and into her heart. “I love you, my darling,” she whispered as she curled up and fell into a deep sleep.
