“Go on, or are you scared? Does someone need their mommy?” A voice from behind called to me.
“No! I'm not....scared,” I responded, giving the group of kids behind me the death glare, hoping it would stir them.
“Then,” the same voice called as I was shoved into a large iron gate in front of me, “Get a move on, Miss Hart!”
I glared at them once more before facing the large gate that towered over me. I let out a sigh and started to climb it. Once over the gate, I turned around to face the crowd, “Okay, forty-eight hours, right?”
A boy smirked, “That's right. If you can spend forty-eight hours here, we will stop harassing you, but if you come out a second earlier, you have to do all of the homework at the orphanage for a month.”
Again I glared, and turned away from them. Those stupid popular kids. Man! I hate them. I'll show them. Some day I'll-
My thoughts were rudely interrupted by the squealing of car tires behind me. I stood and watched as my only chance of escape pulled out of the drive way, disappearing into the hazy forest that led to the main road.
I looked up at my home for the next two days. It was a monstrous four story mansion. A heavy fog surrounded the house, and some of the windows were broken in. The large wooden door hung on one henge in the doorway. It also seemed like moss grew everywhere. In the yard around the house, there were at least a thousand tombstones.
I sighed, and shivered at the sight. Taking a step forward, I did my absolute best to hold back my scared tears, I was already shaking terribly, and I felt if I cried, I would run away.
Suddenly, a bush rustled and I quickened my pace. Soon, I was in a sprint. I ran past the tombstones, but when I got to the door, I screeched to a dead halt.
What if something was in there? No! That is not possible. Nothing lives in a haunted house, right? Right? Or.....no! There's nothing in there! Stop worrying!
Hesitating, I peered into the house. Then, I took a large step, putting me inside. I covered my head and waited for something to pop out and scare me half to death. When nothing of the sort happened, a sigh of relief left my lips. There really was nothing here.
Looking around the room, I found a mirror. Well, part of a mirror. Pieces of broken glass covered the floor, and I was glad I had my boots on as I tip-toed over to the mirror.
“Ugh! This nerdy cover of mine is getting old,” I said as I looked in the mirror. I pulled out my braids and took off my glasses. “This is much better!” I looked in the mirror and was happy I was finally myself. The image in the glass stared back at me. I pulled part of my auburn bangs so that they would cover part of my blue and green eyes. “I feel much better!”
“Okay! Let's make the best of this situation!” I got up and started up the stair case to my left. When you really look at it, this house wasn't all that bad. It had a beautiful pearl colored tile floor with the occasional red rug. It was also very clean, for a haunted mansion, and when you got past the first floor, it didn't look like a haunted mansion at all! Well, other than the eerie spider webs that adorned the walls and ceilings, and creepy sounds that seemed to come from nowhere. Also there was the occasional light breeze that blew the torn red curtains away from the broken windows, revealing the hazy graveyard below.
When I stepped onto the second floor, two large wooden doors across the hall attracted my attention to them. I put a hand on the door knob and went inside. This room was different from the others. First off, the room was significantly larger than the previous rooms I had been in. There were three large columns down the center of the room was a table at the far end of the room. “A ballroom...It's so beautiful! I....I almost feel like dancing.”
I resisted my urge, telling myself I plenty of time to dance and started for the door when I saw something glistening in the corner of my eye. I walked over and bent down to look at the object. It was a small key. It was one of those old timey keys made out of silver. I stuck it in my pocket and left the room.
There was at least twenty doors on the second floor. Most of them were locked, the others were just bed rooms. So, I went up the next flight of stairs to the third floor.
On the third floor it was mostly rooms again, but there was also a library. As I took a step into the library, I got an eerie feeling. Hesitating, I started walking down the aisle towards the back of the room.
There were so many books! Books on cooking, dancing, language books, books om the supernatural; if you were looking for one, I'm sure it was there.
“Who....are you?”
I froze. Who said that? My pulse quickened, and I could feel the tears my eyes were producing. What do I do? Was it a Ghost? Was it my imagination? Whatever it was, I won't let it-
“Oh! You can hear me? How?”
I couldn't hold it in anymore. I took off back to the hallway.
“Wait! I'm not-”
I ran away cutting the voice off. Down the hallway, down the stairs, and into the first semi-safe room I saw-the ballroom.
