So, I was watching Wrestlemania III. I'm a huge pro-wrestler fan and I never realized the amazing ability and showmanship that Macho Man had until I saw his WM3 match with Steamboat. I was amazed at the 19 near-miss pins. Not much break in the action and when there was they only cut to the relating story.
I started to follow Randy Savage a bit more closely, funny that he owns a gym and lives in my town. Anyway, I started following his career and I happened upon Wrestlemania VII where he faced the Ultimate Warrior. Anybody who knows anything about Warrior will know what happened. Macho Man made him look good, but it was a decent match, even for Macho Man. Savage carried Warrior and made him look good with his usual in-match charisma and showmanship, but it was the end that really surprised me.
It was a closing to a very emotional storyline between Macho Man and his now-wife Elizabeth. They had a moment in the ring where they hugged and announced their love, blah, blah, blah. Look it up, it's a good match and decent ending to a story. A Wrestlemania moment to be sure.
Now, what caught my attention was the announcers during this. They were calling the moment like a match. It didn't ruin the moment, but it made it a bit silly. The men were on their feet clapping and the women were crying. That is mostly due to Macho Man's showmanship and the decent depth of the storyline, but I did enjoy the commentary. I found that it embellished the story for me. It wasn't the most tact or subtle thing, but it was Pro-Wrestling.
I'm reminded of the many "Rapport vs Report Talk" studies. The idea that Cross-Gender communication = Cross-culture communication. The idea that men and women share different societies and different values. This is a rather accepted theory, especially for public speaking, but what got me is that it can crawl into other media, exemplified by the Macho Man and Elizabeth moment. This was a well-acted and decent romantic moment, but even the men were into it thanks to the Pro-wrestling commentary.
So, what I want is to have Micheal Cole, Jim Ross, Jerry "The King" Lawler, Matt Striker, and, especially, CM Punk to record the play-by-play for romantic comedies and put it on MP3s or tapes so that men can go in seeing movies like "The Notebook" or "27 Dresses" ((Admittedly, decent chick flicks, but chick flicks none the less)) and understand what's going on. Rapport vs Report at its best!
"SHE LOVES HIM! SHE'S ALWAYS LOVED HIM!"
"DOES HE LOVE HER!?"
"TEARS ROLLING DOWN HER FACE, ARMS STRETCHED OUT!"
"THIS IS SICKENING!"
"..."
"ARE THEY!? IS IT... YES! THEY ARE TOGETHER!"
I need patents for ideas like this.
