I finished Steel Remains. Wow! Just wow! I am already craving the next one. The narrative voice was fresh, and it was really cool to have the main characters be a gay man, a lesbian of colour, and an indigenous guy. I loved the grumpy old warriors thing. I loved that Ringil kept refusing to go with the standard script. I loved the complicated interplay of religion, politics, prejudice, and desire. I've been in the mood for grumpy aging warriers lately, witness my reading the Sharpes, and this was just what I was in the mood for.
I really appreciated that after happily ever after aspect. Ringil playing local hero with increasingly less conviction as he realizes there's nothing for him to do and nowhere to go. Egar yearning for the south and it's beauty and creature comforts. Arceth with her obsessions and her drugs. Them realizing how much he missed everything.
That last scene with Grace-of-heaven haunts me, it does. Dark and beautiful.
