might as well
In my last journal entry I spoke of a story that I was writing. Well, lo and behold, I have finished it. I decided I might as well post it here. Not like anyone will read it. But to those who do read it, pm me or post a comment on what you think. Well, might as well get on with it. Here ya go.

Prologue

His stubby, sausage fingers wrapped around the black rubber handle of his used Cut Co. knife. The round figure slopped through the small hallway. His oversized arms rubbed against the walls, causing the aged blue paint to flake off. As he stumbled down the hall, his eyes darted around the poorly lit hallway, doors on each side, and one at the end of the hall, facing him. A few doors were partially open, which he peeked into as he passed them. In each open room, an attractive woman lay on a ragged mattress mostly naked, staring off into space, all of them in a form of comatose. Each of them had their debt to pay, and he would insure that they would pay it in one way or another.

“Caroline,” the blubbery chin flapped around with each word. “This can’t keep happening.. I mean it was working for a while.”

“So what changed?” A Brazilian accent spoke with a shaky fear. The voice came from one of the doors ahead of him, with no body to accompany it. Even in fear, she sounded attractive, seductive in her own way that made her so good at her job.

“It wasn’t my fault.” He paused in the hallway, several feet from a door on his left. “I know you think it is though.”

“Phil…I don’t want this to end like this.” The voice hesitated. She had always done her best to please him and the customers that he brought to her. She was trying to pay off her debt to him, just to get by, and get out of this hell hole.

“But you messed up too many times.” Phil’s size fourteen boot stepped forward and stopped as he saw the door creep open. Phil couldn’t see who was opening the door. The hinges slid counter clockwise so the door swung inside the room. “Now you have to deal with the consequences.” A sense of regret rang in his tone.

A dark skinny female figure stepped out of the room. She obviously wasn’t wearing a bra, but a stretched out Ozzy Osbourne t-shirt hung low to her knees, exposing both of her shoulders. Whe was face to face with Phil, with the light from the room illuminating only her right side. Her black hair hung lazily around her neck and down her shoulders.

“******** you Phil.” Caroline’s voice echoed through the hall, just before her right arm locked straight out in front of her, bringing the end of a forty M&P to Phil’s chest. She gave a slow, steady squeeze on the trigger, surprising herself when the round went off. Phil’s body flapped like jello as the bullet punctured his chest and straight through his heart. Phil’s green eyes grew wide before rolling into the back of his head, as his body went limp, falling to the floor. He hit the ground making another echo through the hallway and into the rooms. Anyone around that was aware of at least some of their surroundings would have heard his mass slam down on the boards beneath the shag rug that ran the entire length of the hallway.

Caroline’s ice blue eyes flickered open and closed as she took in the sight of her actions. In shock, she dropped to her knees. Silence overtook the hallway. Minutes passed with her sitting on her bare heels. Nothing made a sound, no one came to investigate on what had caused the noise Phil had made when he dropped. His blood poured over the rug around his limp form. Inside a door that Phil had passed, Caroline swore she heard a noise, and looked in the direction of it, but nothing happened. She was alone, kneeling before Phil’s body, frozen by what she had just done. Slowly, realization of what her actions would cause sunk into her mind. She wouldn’t have to be a whore anymore, she wouldn’t have to fake the pleasure men demanded, and Phil commanded when he brought the strangers to her. Her whole life had changed, and it would never be the same again.

Directly behind Carline, at the end of the hall, a door opened, silhouetting a tall figure. It leaned forward and to the left and spoke with uncertainty.

“Caroline?” No response was given to the male voice. He took a few steps into the hallway, cautious of what he would find in the hall. The light behind him lit enough of the hall so he could see a woman down on her knees and then a huge figure on it‘s back just past her. “Caroline, is that you?”

Caroline’s body quickly swung around to face the man, and held the gun just as steady as before, but with a minor shake. “I didn’t kill him!” Rage spat from her red chapped lips. “I mean I didn’t mean to.” Her voice changed to simpering.
“He was coming at me with a knife.” The gun and her arm collapsed towards the floor. “I didn’t know what else to do.” Tears began spewing from her eyes. Streams of mascara flowed down her face. Fear and sadness were accompanied by shock and disbelief. She still didn’t want to believe that she had killed her employer.

The still distant figure rushed forward, reaching Caroline’s slumped body in several short bounds. “It’s okay darling.” He quickly cupped her head into his shoulder and pried the pistol out of her hand. He kept his tone supportive and comforting, understanding what she was talking about, now seeing Phil in greater detail, and the blood that surrounded him in a nice pool. “It’s over now.”

“But Mat, I killed Phil. No one is going to let me live.” Hands grabbed Mat’s sides in desperation. She pulled him close, thinking that Mat didn’t understand the full repercussions of her actions. The men Phil owed money to, the men that would do anything to enact revenge for the death of the perverted over weight man.

“I’ll deal with that. I’m not going to let anybody touch you.” His hand that snatched away the pistol began tucking away the firearm into his leather jacket. “We just need to get out of here right now.”

“I can’t” Caroline fell limp in Mat’s arms, refusing to move like a child refusing to obey their parents.

“Why not? If we don’t someone is going to come and get us both in trouble. If we leave, now, on one will know it was you.” Mat lifted her head off of his shoulder and looked into her eyes. He remembered the first time he had seen them, when he was brought to this very place by a friend, months ago when she was nothing but a whore to him.

“I need my clothes.” An almost whimper echoed out. Caroline’s head turned to the side, looking towards the door of the room she was hiding in. Her place of business, with a stained mattress as her desk.

“Forget your clothes. You can wear mine till we get you some new stuff.” The expression on his face urged her to say yes so they could get moving. Even though Caroline didn’t know it, Mat knew full well what kind of people would be chasing after her. He knew the lengths they would go through to get the job done.

“Alright.” Caroline’s quietly seductive voice to answer was all Mat needed to lift her up into his arms as if he were taking her over the threshold. He stood easily with her in his arms, and turned towards the door he had entered through. “What made you come?”

“No one called me if that’s what you’re thinking. I just had a feeling you needed me.” Mat smiled and started to the door, whispering into her ear. She was special to him, and he wouldn‘t let anything happen to her. Her past meant nothing to him. “It’s all going to be better now. Don’t worry about a thing.”
