Unlucky: Part Four
For the whole lesson I mulled over tho whole Kayla situation. Jasmine and Georgia kept sending each other looks that I don’t think I was meant to see. I keep silent, annoyed at them. We sit down where we usually do for lunch and I eat my food in moody silence. As I finish they both looks at me.
Jasmine gives me a worried look. “What’s happened? You’ve been acting strangely since first lesson.”
Georgia choruses in. “We’re worried.” She doesn’t look it.
“Who’s this Kayla person?”
I look away. “Forget I ever mentioned it.”
“You were sick this morning too.”
“And what? Go to the office then go home? No thanks.” I look up and see her frowning. Georgia meanwhile was eating.
“I don’t know why you don’t like your family.”
“You wouldn’t understand.”
“Try me.”
“I’m sick apparently. Sorry, I can’t.” She gives me a hurt look and faces away. I feel a pang of remorse. “I’m sorry Jasmine. I’m not in a good mood.”
She looks back at me. “Oh, it’s okay. I’m just concerned. And with what you’re going through doesn’t help.” Her hand pats my hand comfortingly. I smile. Lunch ends all too quickly. I feel only slightly comforted, but I won’t tell her that. How can they forget about Kayla? I dawdle behind, wanting to check something.
“Hey, you two can go on ahead. I think I left something on the grass.”
“Okay...” Jasmine gives me a suspicious look.
I wait until they’re out of earshot when I look for a familiar face, any familiar face. I spot Kayla’s best friend and approach her, more worried than anything.
“Hey, Jaimie?”
She frowns at me. “What?”
“Do you know where Kayla is?”
She gives me a look as if I’m sprouting antennae. “Who?”
“Oh, never mind.”
She stalks off. Oh God. Her best friend can’t have forgotten her so completely. That’s ridiculous. I bite my lip. What the hell is going on? I see someone from my year and ask them the same question. He gets confused and responds the same as Jaimie did.
I shake my head and walk off. This can’t be happening. The whole school can’t have forgotten Kayla! She didn’t just disappear off the face of the earth. She rotted in front of me. I lean against a tree that I had stood next to, surveying the people. This is stupid. It’s a stupid figment of my imagination. Or a stupid dream. My hands are sweaty. I brush hair out of my eyes and freeze. Please, no. I had hoped to never see him again. Why is he here? The b*****d. His blue eyes watch me solemnly from over the fence. Mark! How dare he show his face? I hate him. Somebody brushes against me; I could feel the hair on their arm. I gasp as my heart is squeezed and stabbed. A bad, horrible feeling comes over me and I turn as someone screams, basically in my ear. It’s a younger boy and as I look his skin turns red and starts to blister. Oh God. What’s happening? The flesh peels off the bones with a wet sucking sound. The scream has stopped and my ear ring. Everyone else has run, screaming. I press into the tree. No, no, no! The disgusting smell of rotting fills my nose. The bones start to crumble and the boy ends up in a pile of black and red.
I could distantly feel tears run down my face as I slide down the smooth trunk of the tree and wrap my arms around my knees. My hands shake. Oh God. This can’t be happening! Not twice. I start to sob. This is a nightmare. It’s impossible, people just don’t rot. I have a thought and look to where Mark had stood before. He’s still there, expressionless. My mouth hangs open. Why did he not run? He saw it like everyone else. But his reaction is like he’s seen it before. This is twisted. Someone calls out my name and he strolls away. I look to the person who had called my name. Jasmine.
