In most places we have a traditional view of intelligence--based on mathematical, logical, and verbal measurements--that don't reflect the entire spectrum of human abilities.
Because we follow this "traditional" way of determining if a person is smart based on these 3 out of 8 intelligences, a lot of people feel like they're complete idiots. The people who aren't good at math, for example, feel they're beneath others because they fail to acknowledge their strengths and focus on their weaknesses. I hate math thus my wanting to go into the career of Psychology and become a Psychotherapist.
"I believe that we should look at more naturalistic sources of information about how peoples around the world develop skills important to their way of life. Think, for example, of sailors in the South Seas, who find their way around hundreds, or even thousands, of islands by looking at the constellations of starts in the sky, feeling the way a boat passes over the water, and noticing a few scattered landmarks. A word for intelligence in a society of these sailors would probably refer to that kind of navigational ability." - Howard Gardner
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Eight Intelligences are:
Verbal-Linguistic: Ability to communicate through language (listening, reading, writing, speaking)
Logical-Mathematical: Ability to understand logical reasoning and problem solving (math, science, patterns, sequences)
Bodily-Kinesthetic: Ability to use the physical body skillfully and to take in knowledge through bodily sensation (coordination, working with hands)
Visual-Spatial: Ability to understand spatial relationships and to perceive and create images (visual are, graphic design, charts and maps)
Interpersonal: Ability to relate to others, noticing their moods, motivations, and feelings (social activity, cooperative learning, teamwork)
Intrapersonal: Ability to understand one's own behavior and feelings (self-awareness, independence, time spent alone)
Musical: Ability to comprehend and create meaningful sound and recognize patterns (music, sensitivity to sound and patterns)
Naturalistic: Ability to understand features of the environment (interest in nature, environmental balance, ecosystem, stress relief brought by natural environments)
Each intelligence is linked to specific abilities. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Everyone has at least one of these eight intelligences and is at the very least moderately developed in one.
Knowing what your strengths and weaknesses are can help you in many ways like learning easier and even finding your ideal career.
I'll post an assessment test next to help you learn your strengths and weaknesses. There is no way to fail or pass this test. An assessment test is just a way to help you understand yourself better.
