Domo Backpack ate my head....
Crazy adventures in this world we call, GAIA.
Do You Think Gaia Online Falls Under...
I had a discussion with a friend about this a few days ago and thought... Hmm, makes a good journal entry. Do you consider Gaia Online's zOMG! falls under the category of MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online Game)?
Yes, zOMG! allows multiple people to log into a game and interact with one another.
Yes, zOMG! has the same mechanics as other MMOrpgs.
Yes, zOMG! allows questing and progressions.
    Yes, zOMG! has a world.

I'm indifferent about it. As long as all of the above are met, it makes zOMG! a MMOrpg. But my friend thought differently and says zOMG! isn't a MMOrpg. My friend doesn't have a Gaia Online account, so I think that's where the assumption comes in. But she has seen someone play it.

What do you think?

Mmm...Garlic heart

I consider it for all the reasons listed, plus you really can't beat the End Boss without a crew of people, so the game is designed for player interactivity to complete it. I also asked my old friend Google, typing in "gaia zOMG MMORPG" turned up enough hits from reputable sources to convince me it's one.

I had a sandwich made with garlic bread the other day, it was AMAZING! heart

At this point, it is a mini mmorpg. When it opens up Durem (or Gambino, Aekia, maybe Halloween Town), the world will be a massive enough to count. Then again, doesn't Guild Wars have only one town hub as well?

@ Guildwars comment: Guildwars has a -billion- "town hubs". More so than any other game I've seen, even World of Warcraft.

Oh, and on topic, yes, zOMG is most definitely an MMORPG.

I was actually thinking about this too....I really am not sure. I just go with MMORPG because everyone else is. @_____@

Maybe I'm in the fourth option. XD

Gaia itself is a massive online game, and it supports multiple players at the same time... I've never played a "regular" MMO, but zOMG is about what I'd picture one to be, except the focus is less on leveling up and earning items and winning badges than it would be on a more conventional MMO.

While zOMG has those features, Gaia itself is not just an MMO. It is an interactive world which combines many online interactive features. Customizable avatars, online time-wasting games, an in-game economy, items to collect or trade, forums to discuss practically anything, various flavors of chat room, various flavors of walking-around-to-interact interfaces, virtual shops, user-run shops, a RL shop, virtual competitions, occasional RL competitions.

Gaia isn't an MMO. It has an MMO ... but it's a lot more than just an MMO. And if someone says that zOMG is not an MMO ... they're probably in denial. It fits all of the basic criteria for an MMO ... except the subscription fee and download. whee

That's true Rayi. I really like your points. I was thinking about this last night actually. I was really wondering what Gaia is as a website and I can't really describe it. I don't think it can define itself as a whole anymore. At first it was just a bunch of people regular people (older teens and adults) that came on to hang out. But when gaia moved in the direction of preteen and teenager, it kinda lost its way. Now they make items that are leaning toward a more mature audience....so....what is Gaia now? Is it for teens....is it for adults? Everyone? I can't really put my finger on it.

I think in the past we had a connection to the site by the way of the world --- the Gambino story arch, the store keepers and the Von Helson Sisters. It was easy to feel a part of the world --- like a MMORPG. But over the years I think it has lost its way and I wish they would redefine it again. I feel like part of the world is not fully integrated (maybe with the addition of teleporting to different parts of the map or maybe that the navigation is now entirely apart from the world). I think in the beginning we HAD to go to the map if we wanted to get anywhere, right? I remember always having to go there....anyway, I wish we were part of the world again. It all seems stagnant and I hope they reinvigorate it (which they seem to do every once in a while with events...). Ah, maybe it's just me not being a part of forums anymore. But I don't think it's that. Hmmm.
