Stephen N. replied to the discussion "A note about subs/dubs"
I own and watch lots of anime (probably too much actually) both Sub and Dub. I enjoy both. Given the option, I’ll usually watch the Dub version first to catch the plotline and so I can enjoy the animation itself, I’ll then watch it again using the Sub version to catch the nuances that are lost in translation. Note the term, translation; neither dubbing nor subbing is transliteration, that doesn’t work for 2 related languages, never mind Japonic to Germanic. Additionally, good anime Dubs aren’t just translations, modern ADR works at matching the lip-flapping so you don’t get the 60’s Kung Fu movie effect. This inherently involves changing dialogue to coincide with the animation; it’s the price you pay for aesthetics. I do agree that some dubs out there are annoying simply due to the voice acting; I can’t watch more than 2 minutes of Naruto; the ADR voice for Naruto himself just grates my nerves. Having stated all that, I do take exception with some of the Sub “purists” out there. Using their logic, I should not be reading the Christian Bible until I know Greek, The Art of War should be skipped until I am well acquainted with ancient Chinese culture and master Chinese (and make sure it’s the language used in the 6th century BCE), War and Peace is a no-go until I conquer Russian, etc. Don’t forget, this is ENTERTAINMENT, and animated entertainment at that. This is not Rashomon or Seven Samurai. Bleach, where this is posted, is ostensibly about a 15 year old boy whose spirit dumps his lifeless body in random locations so he can go swing a Gundam sized sword at bone-mask wearing evil spirits with holes in their chests. Some of y'all just need to lighten up. Take a deep breath, step away from the computer, and go watch a sunset or something
I thought this was so funny i had to post it.. XD
