Flight of the Unicorn
Ellie & Scar

I should mention right off that these stories are in chronological order, so new additions will appear at various places between the first story and the last one.

I've started to delve into alternate futures that could occur if certain things did or didn't happen. That makes it a bit more tricky for them to be chronological. Couldn't sleep - added three new ones right above the last one.

New Ellie x Scar Song:

"Beneath You" by Spektralized

As soon as I heard this, I knew right away that I'd be writing to this song as well as the others. The song talks about hate, about trying to put it behind you and make a better world - fixing mistakes before it is too late. It also talks about lying awake at night - which is something that they struggle with when they are apart - the longer it has been since they've seen each other, the harder it is for them to fall asleep at night (thought that was kind of a romantic idea, and I explain it as being something that has to do with them being vampires and mates.) This song fits them too, and in many ways, very fitting with parts of the plot of the whole rp, I think. (The parts that fit the rest of the rp for me, when I listen to this are:
hate, trying to put it behind you and make a better world - fixing mistakes before it is too late, etc.)

This is a collection of mini stories that I've written about Ellie and Scar from the Time Travel roleplay. The first one starts off sounding like it's going somewhere R-rated (because of the location, a bedroom), but it doesn't. I think I managed to keep this below the PG-13 level. I just randomly felt like posting this in my journal. I'll probably (possibly) update and add in new sections to this as I write more. I can't seem to stop writing about them! redface heart

The songs that I listen to when I write about them are:

"I Like It Rough" by Lady Gaga

To me (for them), this song is not about a physical relationship, but about the very nature of their early interactions with each other. They're enemies, and must fight each other when they meet in the past, but this attracts Scar, who admires this woman that can fight him evenly. Also, the "bite" scene is kind of intense, and that passionate session of stolen kisses was a part of what led Ellie to fall in love with Scar. In that sense, at first, there is kind of a wild, sexy love-hate vibe between them (which fits the song, I think.) Additionally, even after their relationship evolves into something softer and richer, a playful, teasing vibe remains as an occasional aspect in their relationship with each other. (The "love-hate" vibe is not at all something that I would ever want to have in a real life romantic relationship, but it is entertaining to read in fiction. I just want, love, peace, kindness, humbleness, and gentleness in a real romantic relationship.)

and

"All I Ever Wanted" by Basshunter

Beneath the seemingly dangerous exterior aspects of his personality and motives, all Scar really wants is to love and be loved by Ellie. Looking back, he discovers that almost everything he's done since he met Ellie was in some way motivated by his love for her. His love for her makes him gentler in his pursuit of her as she unintentionally captures his heart the more she is around him.

And now, on to the stories ...

Turning

Ellie awoke to find herself lying on a bed with black satin sheets, wearing something white and silky and chained at the wrists to the wall. Scar entered the room, walking with his usual fluid cat-like grace, wearing black satin pajama pants. He sat down beside Ellie on the bed and trailed the tips of his fingers delicately along the skin of her neck. "My ... but you have ripened beautifully - you are just right now. I think it's time for me to pluck you and eat you, precious one. My blood responds to you with a molten fury of passion - rage, lust, and desire, and maybe even love. I feel in my blood that you, the only woman I can never have, were meant to be my mate."

Shadows of pain moved across his face as he spoke these words - he felt the impossibility of love from her, his bitter enemy, and knew himself doomed to yearn for one who would never love him back. As Ellie watched these emotions play across his face, she suddenly felt the chill of an eternity without someone to love and it made her pity him. As she mused on the weight of eternity, his voice interrupted her thoughts:

"I know that you would never let me do this ... more's the pity that I didn't kiss you when I had the chance all those years ago ... but I will take your lips now" ... and so saying, bent low over Ellie and kissed her. Wild, passionate, and possesive - hungry, and yet at moments, tender and lingering - as of a starving man who might never eat again having his last meal.

He pulled away and leaned over Ellie to look into her eyes, reading there rage, fear, confusion, and desire in one mingled jumble. His velvety laughter broke the silence, "You liked that, didn't you?" Ellie struggled against her bonds, but she knew screaming would be useless. "Now, I have something to give to you - a precious gift that will sustain your life for a very long time. Treasure it and remember me."

So saying, he leaned over Ellie again, kissed her neck lightly, and then, in one quick, fluid motion, sank his teeth into her flesh.

Ellie realized that she had only thought she had known what pain was before that moment. Even the sensation of breaking a bone paled in comparison to this. Raging fires of pain rolled over her from head to foot, and she lay suspended in what felt like an eternity of agony, but she could feel her body weakening, and the nauseating sound of him drinking her blood made her vomit inside her throat. Terrible fear held her in its grip as he greedily sucked her life down - would he stop, or would he kill her? Finally, she began to slip into unconsciousness, and as the world started to blur, Ellie could feel his teeth pull out of her neck, and then he kissed the wound softly and left the room. Dimly, she could hear him saying, to himself, "That was the best 5 minutes of my entire life thus far - and not the blood, though it was exquisite - it was kissing her for the first, and probably only time that I will always remember." A deep sigh ... and then, to someone in the other room: "Bandage her neck and hook her up to the machine - she'll need some blood now."

...............................................................

Waking Up

When she woke up, Ellie was laying on a bed in the infirmary in Time Force. "Was it all a dream?" she wondered, as she remembered that she had had dreams of this sort before. The face of her handsome enemy still made its way into her dreams even now - and in her dreams, they were not Time Force and terrorist, they were man and woman, and there was no history of pain between them - no scars or bullet wounds, no fear or pain. Admittedly, the man was so obscenely handsome that it wasn't surprising that he made his way into her dreams, and though Ellie enjoyed dreaming of him while she was asleep, when she woke up, she always felt guilty. "I should hate him ... I do hate him ... don't I?" She had to keep reassuring herself that, yes, she did in fact hate him. And yet ... and yet ... when she dreamed about him, she was happy ...

"Was it all a dream?" she asked aloud, reaching out to touch her neck, and finding that the wound was still throbbing in pain. No, clearly not a dream ... Her hand lingered over her bandaged neck as she remembered what had happened.

She was flushed, feverish - and she had the vague impression that she had been unconscious for days. As she stirred, a sleepy little nurse sitting in a chair beside her bed jumped to her feet and inquired after her well-being. ......

...............................................................

Changing & Craving

Ellie returned to her room and lay down on her bed, facing the windows that overlooked the lake. "Window 5: Display Scar," she said, and the voice activation caused an image of Scar's face to display on the central window. It was an image that Ellie had had commissioned from an artist years ago - she had never wanted to forget the face of the man who was her most dangerous enemy. She had memorized the face. In the past, when she was alone in the gym, she had often asked the window in front of her to display his face, and while she pounded away on a punching bag or ran on a treadmill, the image of her rage was there before her, taunting her and spurring her on.

But now, as she stared into the handsome, brooding eyes, she saw his sadness, his utter loneliness. She remembered the feel of his mouth on hers and blushed scarlet as she absently touched her lips with trembling fingers, recalling, knowing - that no one - no one had ever kissed her like that before. Of course, Scar had seen to that! Over all the years, no one had ever been allowed to get close enough to kiss her quite so passionately or for so long. The fierce, animal possessiveness of a vampire for his chosen mate, she now knew. "Will I be like that?" she wondered. The answer was staring her in the face. Everywhere she went, his face was the window she chose now - she didn't even want to look at the lake anymore. And when she thought of him, her blood burned within her, and her breath came quickly. Already, she felt that she belonged to this strange, frightening, and somehow very appealing man who had been a part of her life, in the background, for almost as long as she could remember. As she lay there, remembering him, her body burned with an uncomfortable heat, and the wound on her neck throbbed painfully. And as if there were a cord between the two of them, Ellie felt the pull of him upon her, felt that she must go to him, that she must see him, hear his voice ... feel his mouth upon hers once more ... These desires poured across her soul in waves, and she wondered, "How long will I have the strength to resist the overpowering urge to see him? The more time passes, the more difficult it becomes to restrain myself from trying to find him, the more it feels as though my very body will act against my will ... But I yearn to see him again. It is only my sense of duty that keeps me here now. I have a duty to do - I must defeat him and those he stands with. I must ..." she trailed off ... "But no matter what happens, I must not let him die ... I wonder, do I love him?"

...............................................................................

Can't Sleep

Ellie was restless ... she just couldn't seem to drop off to sleep anymore. Feverish visions of Scar haunted her mind. She had to get out of her room. The spacious room seemed so small now - enclosed. She paced back and forth, and thought that she might take a walk outside for awhile. Leaving the light on, she left her room and headed for the base exit. Nodding to the guard at the entry, she said, by way of explanation. "I can't sleep, and I wanted to go out for a walk by the lake. I'll be back soon." The guard looked concerned, but as she outranked him, didn't feel that it was his place to stop her. "Don't worry, I won't be gone long," she assured the troubled man, smiling kindly at him.

When she was outside the door, she nearly ran to the shore on the opposite side of the lake. For some reason, she just felt that she needed to be there. As she stood looking out over the water which carried the reflections of moonlight, her thoughts turned to Scar again. And suddenly, a pair of arms wrapped around her waist from behind and a velvety voice whispered, "Boo!" in her ear. She jumped a little, but the strong arms held her close. He had no intention of letting her go yet, obviously. She relaxed in his grip, leaning into his embrace, enjoying the feeling of being held in his arms. The feeling of tension caused by being away from him melted away and in its place was a sort of warm, gentle electricity that travelled all over her body at his touch.

"It's you ..." she said in a voice that she hoped did not sound as overjoyed as she felt at being near him.

"Yes," he said, chuckling softly at her 'eloquence'.

Silence for the space of a few seconds, and then Ellie asked, "How did you know that I'd be here?"

"Well ... I don't think you'll like the answer to that. I'm sure that you must know by now that I watch you sometimes. Or rather, I see it more as watching over you. I know you must think it's creepy, but it's how I'm wired ... I think it's a vampire instinct of some sort - needing to be near your mate. I don't think I'd be able to stop myself from doing it even if I wanted to," he said, pulling her in a bit closer as if at the thought of having to give up being near her.

"I wonder if that's why I can't stop thinking of you, why I need to be near you," Ellie muttered under her breath reflectively. The arms held her just a little closer and he nuzzled her neck gently.

Pretending that he hadn't heard every word with perfect clarity, Scar said, "Hmm?" inquisitively.

"Oh nothing ... just something that I may tell you someday," Ellie said softly.

"You know, if I go for more than a few days without seeing you, I start to get really distracted and cranky, and I just can't seem to sleep at all. When I am away from you, the feeling of there being a rubber band stretched out between us, pulling me toward you is painful," he said humbly and tenderly.

Ellie felt the need to resist the direction that the conversation was going - after all, she couldn't be in love with her enemy, could she? To change the subject, she said, "There is something I need to ask you. I was hoping you could tell me what to do."

This roused his curiousity. "What is it?" he asked.

Ellie turned around in his arms so that she was facing him, and pulled her upper lip up to reveal the fang-like dimensions her eye-teeth were taking on, "I keep stabbing the inside of my mouth with these when I eat. What can I do about that?" she asked earnestly.

He removed one of his arms from around her waist in order to gently pry apart her lips and examine her teeth. "Wow ..." he said, "it definitely worked." Refocusing his thoughts and addressing the question at hand, he said simply, "They're retractable."

"What?!" Ellie was shocked and a bit disgusted with herself for not figuring this out sooner. After all, when he had kissed her, she definitely had not felt fangs. She blushed at the thought. "How?" she asked quickly so as not to allow an awkward pause.

"I don't know, exactly how I do it - it comes so naturally to me now, that it's actually more difficult for me to extend my fangs than to keep them in. Let me see if I can teach you how to do it," he said as he tenderly examined her lips with his fingers, noting the lacerations. "I'm sorry," he said contritely, "I should have told you ... I didn't think about it until after I had returned you home. I was hoping that you'd be able to figure it out on your own. I'm sorry."

"There are muscles in your gums -"

"No there aren't!" Ellie interrupted decisively - she didn't remember much from anatomy class in college, but she was pretty sure she could remember that much, at least.

"I should have said, there weren't before, but there are now," he resumed gently, feeling the area of her gums that was above one of her fangs, "There," he said, as he carefully prodded a protruding part of her gums. "Focus on that spot and try moving it. Sometimes, it helps to open your mouth as if you're yawning." When she tried these things, she could feel her teeth beginning to pull up higher into their sockets. "There!" he said again, as she succeeded in retracting the teeth to a normal length.

Ellie looked up at Scar as he focused on her mouth, still prodding and poking gingerly, mumbling about trying to find medicine for the lacerations inside her mouth, he didn't see her looking up at him. His face was so close ... she could feel his breath on her face. He was so beautiful in the moonlight ... her heart started beating faster and the warmth in her body increased. She wriggled in his grasp - trying to get free.

"Wait ... please just let me hold you for a little longer," he entreated her in such a sorrowful voice that Ellie relented and relaxed, as his other hand dropped from her mouth and tightened around her waist again. She pulled closer to him and leaned her head against his chest, listening to his heartbeat and feeling warm and blissfully happy in his arms. She was really quite sleepy - hadn't had a decent night's sleep in days. Before she knew what was happening, her body had gone limp and he had picked her up and was carrying her back toward the base.

"No ... you can't!" she muttered sleepily into his chest, "it's not safe for you to go there."

"I'm betting on there not being anyone awake at 2 in the morning who will recognize me," he whispered sarcastically.

Ellie's eyes closed and she was dreaming. In her dream, she thought he was leaving her and that she'd never see him again. "Please come back! I need to see you!" she muttered in her sleep. He smiled down at her sleeping face.

"I will always come back, my love," he whispered.

They were close to the base now. It was time for them to part. He set her down carefully and roused her by shaking her gently. She must have been really sleep-deprived, because it took a few seconds to wake her up. "Oh, we're here," she mumbled sleepily.

"Are you okay to make it to the front door?" he teased lightly.

Ellie retorted, "Yes, thank you - I'll be fine from her on."

Before she could say anything else, he pulled her close for a quick hug and held her for a moment. "I'll be back soon. Just a couple of days. You can see me again if you want to. Just walk out to the opposite shore of the lake."

Ellie nodded and mumbled a sleepy, "Thank you for carrying me," and then headed off to her room, waving to the guard as she walked by. She slept beautifully that night, and she dreamed of Scar, and smiled in her sleep.

When Will I See You Again?

Three days later, Ellie was restless again. "Time for another walk out by the lake," she thought. Everything was the same as before - the nervous guard, the brisk walk to the opposite shore of the lake, and just when her thoughts had turned to daydreams, the sudden shock as she felt his arms go around her waist from behind, pulling her to him possessively, the same warm, gentle electric feeling that flooded her entire body at his touch.

"I startle you every time," he said with an insufferable smugness, seeming proud of himself.

"Next time, try approaching me from the front!" Ellie said irritably.

"A little cranky, are we?" he purred, his voice sensuous and resonant. He nuzzled her neck. The sensation was breath-takingly delicious.

For a moment, Ellie couldn't answer. He always seemed to throw her off base and reduce her to a trembling school girl with a crush. "I don't know why I'm doing this," she groused petulantly once she was able to breathe again. "I shouldn't be out here after curfew ..."

"If you want, I can come at an earlier time," he said seriously.

Ignoring his attempt to get her to admit that he was the reason she went on these walks, she said, "I have some more questions for you. I'm not sure how many of them you'll want to answer, but I have to ask you anyway."

"If I am your mate and you care for me, then why did you go with the men who shot my parents, and why did you say you would have killed me, 'if not for that pretty little compliment,' as you put it. I hated you for years because of those things. If you want me to love you, then why did you do those horrible things to me?" She shivered involuntarily at her memories of him.

His arms tightened around her, and he said, "Ellie, I did those things because I love you. I know it sounds strange, but please let me explain. I went with those men so that I could ensure that neither you nor your parents were killed by the organization. And I shot your parents -" He felt her body go stiff and defensive in his arms, "- wait, I'll explain . I made sure that I was the one to do it so that they were not fatally wounded. It had to be me. No one else would have cared, they would simply have been blown away. They would have been shot by someone anyway because they were there when we came for you. I made sure that the one who did the shooting was me."

"As for saying that I would have killed you if not for that compliment ... there is some truth to that. That compliment is a part of what made me fall in love with you, as was our very long and interesting conversation that evening ... and the fact that you can match me in a fight ... I doubt I would have killed you - killing women is coward's work. I guess I was just trying to say that I was supposed to kill you, but that because I love you, I couldn't."

"Well, it certainly was a memorable statement," Ellie said dubiously ... "Do you have any idea how much you frightened me?!" indignant, this time.

"I know, I know ... Sometimes I wonder if I should go back and do that part differently ... but if I changed that, I don't think that we'd be having this conversation now ... As you said, it certainly made me memorable. I am selfish, after all, but I believed that I would be able to make it up to you someday, and I will, if you will let me," he said, kissing her neck softly, "Ellie, I love you -"

"And biting me?! What was that?!" Ellie interjected, to halt the flow of tender words that she couldn't respond to yet.

"Again, all I can say is that I did it because I love you, Ellie," he said, "and yes, that was selfish too ... but even if you could never love me like I love you, I couldn't bear to see you die someday, with your short, mortal life-span flashing by all too quickly. The thought of centuries of life without you here too was more than I could bear. I couldn't let that happen. Of course, I had also hoped that we might share our long lives together, but even if it that could never be - I needed to save your life."

"One more question: what am I now? Am I still human?" she asked.

"What do you think? You have two eyes, a nose, a mouth -" he said, running a finger across her lips softly. "You will live much, much longer than you would have otherwise, and you are immune to disease. You are stronger and faster than most people will ever be - something like an Olympic athlete's level of fitness. However, you are not invincible. Weapons can hurt or kill you. You do have strange teeth and do enjoy the taste of blood, though you don't need it to survive. What you are is what everyone will probably be one day once science reaches the point that the aging process can be stopped - minus the teeth and the taste for blood part, of course. What this is - I think of it as a contagious, gene altering condition. I've never been inclined to let myself become a test subject in order to find out for sure if that's what it is ... "

Ellie shuddered as she imagined centuries trapped in some cold, gray little lab somewhere, "I'm not exactly inclined to go down that road either."

"I think I might need to be going now. It isn't good if I'm gone too long. That poor guard looks really uncomfortable with letting me leave the base after curfew ... " She stepped out of the circle of his arms reluctantly, and as she started to walk away, his fingers closed around her wrist, holding on to her. She turned around and when she looked at his face, the sorrow at imminent separation that she felt herself was mirrored in his eyes. The same intense longing to be by his side always that burned in her was written on his face as well.

"Ellie ..." he broke off and gently lifted her chin with his free hand, so that she couldn't look away from his searching gaze. "When I am gone, how do you feel? Do you want to see me? Do you miss me? Is that why you can't sleep?"

"When you are gone ... everything feels wrong. I grow restless and distracted. Yes, I do want to see you. I think about you all the time, and I miss you like crazy when you're gone ... It is hard to sleep when I feel like that ... Do you know why this is happening? I thought it might be because you bit me," she trailed off sheepishly. "Is that why?" she turned a questioning gaze up at him.

"I'm not sure," he said, "but I think that you'll understand why eventually. Once you do, I will be interested in hearing the answer, the 'why' of it all. I want to know too." He reached out to caress the side of her face, and his hand paused there as he gazed into her eyes. He caressed her lips softly with a finger and leaned forward. Ellie eyelids fluttered closed. This time she wanted his kisses ... As she waited expectantly, she was surprised when instead of kissing her, she felt him draw her into his arms. He held her close for a long time, breathing in the scent of her hair, nuzzling her neck softly. "This is good," Ellie thought as she relaxed into the warmth of his arms, wishing that she could stay like that forever - safe, protected, cherished, loved ...

"Oh!" She shook herself. "I almost fell asleep again! Can't let that happen! You might do wicked things to me again while I'm passed out, like dressing me up in white satin lingerie, and chaining me up on a bed covered in black satin sheets!" she laughed.

"It wasn't me - I mean, I didn't ... the lingerie ... I have too much respect for you to be the one to attire you so against your will myself, though I did choose the lingerie," he admitted sheepishly.

"Then ... who?" asked Ellie, alarmed at the thought of some other strange man she didn't know putting something like that on her - "Were there any women in that organization?" she wondered, desperately hoping that there were..

"It was Marta, the cook - there's no way I would let a man do something like that to you!" he said in a low, threatening voice that Ellie was pretty sure meant he would demolish on sight any man who dared to touch his mate's body. After a brief moment (possibly to imagine himself destroying any man who would dare to do such a thing?) He continued, "I was amused by your assumption that I had, um .. performed the change of outfit myself, though. You should have seen your expression when I walked into the room and everything sort of clicked in your brain - you were horrified! Great fun! ..." he finished, chuckling and smiling mischievously.

"You're terrible!" Ellie said in mock horror, backing away and grinning.

"I know!" he said with a wide impish grin, as he reached out and pulled her back into his arms.

"When will I see you again?" Ellie asked.

"Hmm ... this time I'm not sure - possibly a week."

Ellie groaned. "You're making me crazy with your weird vampirish voodoo powers, you rascal! The least you can do is be around more often if I'm to be your puppet, tied so to you that I feel I must be wherever you are ... How does 5 nights sound instead of a week?"

"Four" he said, bargaining his time down himself - he hated to be away from her.

"Are you sure?" she asked. "I will be here at 7 PM four nights from now, so you had better not be late," she said seriously.

"It's a date!" he said, kissing her cheek and vanishing into the darkness before Ellie could protest the use of the word "date" - even in the context of it being an appointment to meet rather than a romantic rendezvous. She was pretty sure that the choice of the word "date" was a deliberate one on his part. She walked back to Time Force headquarters smiling softly.

...............................................................................

All For You

"Four days is just too long!" Scar groaned as he lay on his bed, trying desperately to get some sleep on the third night. "Well, if I can't sleep without seeing her, I may as well think about her for awhile - maybe that will help a bit."

"She has the same 'symptoms' of the pain of separation that I do," he thought, making a list, trying to figure out how she felt about him.

"She lets me hold her close and even seems to enjoy it, even to need it."

"She wasn't angry or frightened when I told her that I watch her."

"In her sleep, when I was carrying her, she said that she needs to see me."

"And the last time I saw her, when I touched her lips and leaned in close to her to embrace her, her eyes closed for a second. Was she expecting, even wanting me to kiss her?" He dismissed this thought as highly unlikely.

And yet ...

"She didn't feel that she needed to be near me until she became a vampire - maybe it is only an after-effect of being turned into a vampire by me."

"When I tell her that I love her, she doesn't respond in any way - she changes the subject quickly."

"She used to hate me passionately not that long ago. I don't think that she hates me anymore though."

But ...

"She has all the feelings and symptoms of a vampire's primal need to be near her mate. She's never said anything about loving me in return, but everything else is the same."

Then, his thoughts dissolved into a disordered jumble, but they were all about Ellie - holding her, her face, her smile, the way she smelled so good, how soft she was in his arms, how much he needed to be near her and hold her, and about how fast he was falling deeper and deeper in love with her the more time he spent with her. She was the first and only woman he had ever loved, and he knew that she would always be the only woman he would ever love. She was his mate, and his heart belonged to her. Would she ever love him in return? Would he ever be, to her, her mate?

His thoughts turned to the past. Oddly, before he had met Ellie, he had scoffed at the things he had heard about what love meant for a vampire - that it was so intense, driven, unbreakable, eternal. It was a myth, he had said. Before her, all women had seemed nothing more than cheap, beautiful dolls - hollow and weak, with no strength or intelligence - nothing more than pretty toys that he quickly grew bored of. But Ellie ... he sighed with longing ... Ellie was so very different. His first meeting with her was spectacular. He had never (since becoming a vampire) fought anyone who could match him evenly, and even leave him with a mark as proof that she had had a victory in that fight. She had been magnificent in that fight, he recalled with admiration as he remembered her speed, grace, and skill - it had been quite enjoyable ... He had been fascinated, intrigued. He wanted to fight her again, and always hoped that they would meet again on another mission, but had been disappointed continuously for awhile, and he found his thoughts turning to her more and more. He had wanted to continue fighting her, to see her again ... recalling vividly a moment in their first fight when he had the upper hand for a moment and he had pushed her back against a wall for a moment, pinning her arms against the wall and leaning forward, staring at her, fascinated. Electricity went all through him as he gazed into her big blue eyes, seeing the fierce heart of a fighter in her gaze. Beautiful, but deadly - no mere toy that he could reach out and take so easily. Here, at last, was a woman who could match him evenly, a point that was born anew upon his consciousness as she somehow slipped out of his grasp a moment later, drew a knife, and slashed a mark along the right side of his face with the grace and precision of a skilled sword fighter, She was on the other side of the room before he knew it, but she stopped and turned around. "I really did do it after all ... just as you had said I would ... I'm sorry," she said - there had been genuine remorse in her eyes, and then, as he stood there, staring dumbly holding his bleeding face, she ran out of the room, and by the time he recovered his wits sufficiently to think clearly, she had vanished. It had all begun with that fight ...

Later, when the word came down that she had become a target for elimination, he had insisted on joining the team that would be dispatched to do the job, claiming an old grievance - she had scarred his face. But really, he went to make sure that neither her not anyone she cared about would be killed.

He began to keep a watch on her, keeping track of her whereabouts after that - he wanted to make sure that nothing happened to her, that the organization made no further attempts on her life. He wanted her to live to fight and fascinate him. He recalled the night of her first kiss bitterly, wishing that another had not been the first to claim those lips. 16 years old - some tall skinny kid. Before the kiss could get really intense, (what the heck was that lecherous young fellow thinking anyway?! It was a first kiss and she was so innocent!) Scar had thrown a rock from the shadows with perfect aim, right at the back of the young fool's head. Just hard enough to injure, not to kill. And the the kid had collapsed on the floor, much to Ellie's horror. She knelt over him with concern, but a moment later, she looked up, out into the darkness curiously. "Who's there?!" she inquired indignantly, but Scar was already retreating from his hiding spot.

After that, the watch he kept on her was more close, making sure that no one could ever take more from her than a kiss. It had been difficult to persuade the organization that he should stay in England, but he had managed to persuade them that he was tracking down a future Time Force agent, and that it would pay off eventually. A few years passed, and when she was 19, he decided that he wanted to meet her - she had already known him at their first meeting, so that meant he must have met her in the past ... She was 19 and already beautiful, though not quite so beautiful as he knew she would be when she reached maturity - she was pretty at 19, but she had been spectacular at 30. Even at 19, she was already quite intelligent - an excellent conversationalist, and interested in joining the military soon ... "19 ..." he had mused ... certainly old enough for a kiss ... the feel of her delicate fingers tracing his scar softly ... but she had had too much to drink - he certainly wasn't going to kiss her in that condition ... though he yearned to very much ... She made it home safely - he watched to make sure of that.

Yeas passed, and all through those years, he continued to guard her possessively so that no one would steal his prize from him. By this point in time, there was no doubt in his mind - she was his mate. He waited impatiently for her to reach the day of joining Time Force ... oh how he wanted to fight her ... pin her against that wall again, stare into her beautiful blue eyes and see her ferocious side.

The fight happened, and he rejoined the current time at the moment that he had left it to be by her side watching her all those years. He must have her ... and he must not let her die ... so the next time he went along on a mission, he brought a chemical substance that would (safely) render her unconscious ... it was a cheap tactic, he knew, but she was too strong - this was the only way he'd be able to do any of the things that he burned with desire to do ... the kisses ... electric ... her mouth ... no other kiss had ever been like this, and none ever could be or would be, he knew ... his mate, his love. The blood was delicious too, though he rather regretted leaving her so pale and weak. But for the transformation to take place, her body had to be weak enough for the (virus, is it?) to take over and mutate her body. He hoped that she would be able to forgive him someday ...

And now, as he lay on his bed thinking about her, he knew that now was the best time of all, though he knew it would be far better if or when she ever fell in love with him. But now was good ... seeing her in the moonlight ... holding her close ... courting her ... falling more and more in love with her ...

But there was one thing that made a relationship between them truly impossible. Their work. They were on opposite sides of a war over history. He thought back to the reasons he had joined and then stayed in the terrorist faction ...

At first it was sheer boredom. Nothing in life seemed to matter anymore. His life was empty, and he thought maybe a bit of excitement ... and power was a somewhat attractive prospect - he wouldn't mind being affiliated with a group of people who ruled the world and held it captive to their whims, but as time went by and he considered what that would mean, he realized that there really was nothing that being powerful could bring him that he hadn't already had and grown weary of. And then he met Ellie ... and he wanted to see her again and fight her ... and he thought that even if he couldn't win her love, if he became powerful enough and his word was law, he could take her whether she wanted to belong to him or not. He would make her his bride, his queen ... his mate ... In all the world, the only thing that he really wanted was her ... and maybe he would be able to take her someday if he became powerful enough ...

But his affiliation with the terrorists had grown more and more distasteful of late. Someone had suggested going back in history to pull Hitler forward in time to be their military tactician and spokesman. He was to be nothing more than a puppet in their hands, but Scar grew concerned that perhaps the monster they kept in a metaphorical cage as a puppet might someday break free, dominate them all, and do dreadful things to the world. "The man is a monster and a fool," Scar had thought in disgust when the order had been given to retrieve him. Scar had opted out of that mission. He could not abide any person who based their opinions of other people on the basis of ethnicity, culture, race, or religion. "Such ignorance ..." That was when he began to think seriously about leaving the organization and to make plans. He did rather enjoy bullying Hitler, though - remembering the time that he had insulted Hitler profusely in Japanese (a language that neither Hitler, nor anyone else on base knew), enjoying the irony of insulting Hitler in the language of one of the countries Hitler had been allied with during WWII (Hitler only spoke German - link)

The more Scar thought about it, the more he realized that if he ever took Ellie by force, he would be making her nothing more than another one of the empty dolls that he so despised. No ... he wanted her to choose him of her own accord, or not at all ... And as he spent more time with her, the more he wanted to court her gently, tenderly ... he wanted real love, not forced captivity or empty lust. Though desire is all well and good in the proper place and time (Scar was born in an era when, if a man loved a woman and wanted to marry her, he would wait until he married her ... to do certain things) ... desire would never be a problem for either of them, he knew, but love ... after all he had put her through, could she ever love him?

But one thing was for certain - she could never legitimately be in any kind of relationship with him if Scar remained her enemy, and if he stayed with the terrorist organization while Hitler was there, she would loathe Scar for it.

So, the next day toward evening, after a sleepless night, Scar decided to leave. As he exited his room, he thought ... "What the heck, one more for the road," and as he met Hitler walking down the hallway, Scar blocked the smaller man's path and towered over him, opening his mouth to reveal his extended fangs and advanced toward him. Hitler screamed something in German and fell over in a dead faint. Scar laughed sardonically and stepped over Hitler's scrawny form lying prostrate on the floor. He paused for a moment ... "I wonder if I should kill him here?" he considered this for a moment, and it was an attractive prospect. "No, I think it will be much better for you to die as history recorded your death, you worm ... hopeless, about to be surrounded by your enemies, and taking your own life like the coward that you are ... Yes, that will be so, so much better ..." Scar smiled with grim pleasure at the thought, and picked up the unconscious men as lightly as if he were a sack of grain, and headed for the hangar, eyed the sleeping guard with satisfaction, and took off in one of the time machines that were on base at the moment. "Ellie, I have a present for you," he thought as he piloted the craft toward Romania. She would enjoy sending the monster back to that moment in history that he had realized he had lost his war.

At light speed, the journey was very fast, and Hitler was still unconscious when Scar landed the time machine in an empty field about 2 miles from the Time Force base. "I'll carry this ... creature ... the rest of the way, because if I flew right in there, they'd shoot me out of the sky - as I would merely be a person flying an enemy craft over their base. I loathe the thought of bringing this disgusting monster with me to the appointed time and place of my visit with Ellie by the lake, but it's the only way I can do this without getting killed.

He could tell that Ellie was overjoyed to see him again, though she tried hard to pretend that she was only there because she couldn't sleep if she didn't see him. After a stop by the brig to deposit Hitler in the worst cell on base, Ellie looked up at him and said, "Are you ready? They'll treat you well if you cooperate with us, I know. I'll have them send Hitler back immediately after I inform my superiors of what you did. Of course, they'll want to talk to you. I'll do my best to make sure that they treat you well, and if they accept my recommendation - and if you are interested ... you'd be joining Time Force in some capacity - either on base or out on the field on missions."

"I think I'd like that - especially the part about getting to be around you all the time," Scar said winking at her.

Questions & Answers - Alternate Future

They weren't able to talk out by the lake that night. Scar was questioned extensively. There had been a lot of difficult questions for her to answer too, and she was not at all sure that she would still be with the Force much longer if her actions were deemed worthy of dismissal. But she didn't seem to mind that as much as she had thought she would. She was worried about Scar. What would they do to him? And what would the terrorists do to him when they found out about his betrayal - he would be eliminated by them in the past before his decision to leave them - as soon as this thought went through her mind, she knew that he needed to be sent back in time right away. He would be killed soon if something wasn't done. She waited for a pause in the questioning and interjected hurriedly, "We need to send him back at once - they will kill him in the past as soon as they discover his betrayal. Even if we travelled back in time, we might not get there fast enough - surrounded as he is by his comrades there - getting to him would be nearly impossible, and would result in many deaths on both sides, and his life might not be saved inspite of it all. Scar needs to go back now!" This was generally agreed upon, and the only person who seemed resistant to the idea was Scar, but even he realized that it would be necessary.

"How long has it been?" Ellie asked.

"Only an hour or two since I left - I'm sure that they've noticed by now that I'm gone. I will need to go back in time to stop myself from coming here. But if there's ever any way that I can be of assistance to you in taking them down, I will do it."

"What are we going to do about Hitler?" Ellie asked. "He'll remember what happened, won't he?"

"Let me see ..." I can leave him with you, and if I stop myself from leaving to come here, the Hitler that is there in that time won't be kidnapped and brought here. That leaves me wondering what will happen when there are two of me in the same place and time."

"I have experienced that before, and I can tell you what to do. I only know what happened, because someone who saw it told me what they saw - I don't remember it, though somehow, I have some of the memories from the other me too. That should help you - keep you from coming here too soon. It's like this - walk straight at yourself, and if you're close enough in age to the other you, you won't even be able to touch yourself - your body and mind will merge with the other you and there will only be one of you left. But what I'm concerned about is that you might not remember not to come. Maybe we need to send something back with you - a note or a warning of some sort?"

"We can save this in the Time Preserve, Ellie," said Sr. Commander _____, eyeing the pair before him. " We'll make sure that we remember to tell him not to come yet. We will need to defeat them first before he can come back - so that they won't be able to do anything to him. You can tell him that the next time you see him, Ellie."

Ellie nodded absently and then started in shock, "S-sir?" What in the world was she going to say - what she had done - talking to Scar, seeing him, leaving the base - she could be sent to prison for it ...

"Don't worry about it Ellie," said the Senior Commander kindly. "Someone came from the future to tell us to trust Scar and that it's okay for you to see him. Just be careful when you go out at night, okay? Though I know Scar would never let any harm come to you. He loves you, you know."

"Sir?!" Ellie was as astonished at this casual statement as at the fact that her commander had known about everything all along.

"I'll just make sure to have a talk with that guard ..." the Senior Commander said reflectively, "and I'll add in to the Time Preserve a comment stating that I need to talk to you about seeing Scar, because you won't remember when the future changes."

The Senior Commander's gaze took in the way Scar's eyes followed Ellie adoringly. If he hadn't been a military man in a formal situation like this, the Commander would have liked to have inserted a joke about a wedding date somewhere in this commentary. The visit from the future had been most enlightening ... No need to stand in the way of something that would not only be good for the two of them but would also end up saving Time Force in a desperate hour. It was fun playing Cupid, he reflected with satisfaction.

"I Love You" - Version 1 - Alternate Future

Ellie hummed happily, as she looked through her closet, considering what to wear out to the lake tonight. Blue - definitely something blue - he said it brought out her eyes. " But then again, no one can see color in the darkness ..." Her thoughts trailed off. After meticulous preparation, she finally felt ready to go. "Wait a minute!" she said out loud, "I almost forgot to bring the books with me - oh, and a light of course - maybe I should wear blue ..."

She took down a few of the books that she had been wanting to read and discuss with him. He was one of the only men she had ever met who had both a voracious appetite for reading and an eagerness to discuss what he read with someone else. It was heavenly to interact with a man on an intellectual level, Ellie mused, smiling, as she grabbed an old blanket from a shelf - they would sit down on the blanket by the lakeshore and read and talk together - like a picnic, only at night, and with no food. She chuckled at this thought.

As she walked around the lake's edge out toward the far shore of the lake, Ellie let her thoughts dwell on Scar and on her feelings for him. She was a little uncertain as to what exactly she felt for him, all she knew was that being around him lit her heart up and made her happy. She walked a bit faster, anxious to see him, when she was half-way there, she said, "Oh no! I forgot the telescope! We were going to look at Mars tonight ..."

"What a pity" - his voice, to her left.

"Just count to 10 before you say anything ..." she muttered under her breath ... She did not want to be irritated with him for startling her tonight. She hadn't seen him in a week, and she didn't want to be angry at him over such a trifling matter. She was so glad to see him ... Being away from him for a week had been awful. It was hard to eat, sleep, breathe, think - the longer she was away from him.

"I can go back and get it," she said.

"Don't - not that I don't want to look at Mars with you, but right now, I -" his arms were around her in a sudden fierce hug, and the books in her hands fell to the ground, "I just want to hold you ..."

And she wanted to be held. She relished the feeling of warmth that rushed through her blood when he held her in his arms. "I missed you," she said simply.

"I missed you too," - and there was a catch in his throat. Something was wrong. A chill hand of fear seized Ellie's heart.

"What's wrong?" Ellie asked in concern.

"They're going to try to eliminate you again," he said in a hollow voice, and his arms tightened around her. "They wouldn't let me go this time." 'You failed last time, didn't you?' was all they said - "Ellie, I don't even know when, what time in your life they are going to to try to kill you. And I'm so afraid that they're going to succeed - that one day soon you might just not exist anymore - and I wouldn't even remember that you had ever lived," his arms around her were trembling as he pulled her closer.

Ellie let out a sigh of relief. She had been so afraid that something bad had happened to him or that he was about to be forced to do something dreadful that would make him ashamed to face her. She reached up to touch the side of his face and looked in his eyes. "Listen to me - you don't have to worry about that. No matter what they do, it will be undone. We have saved many lives that were erased before," Ellie said calmly,"I have a lot of faith in the Time Preserve. If I am erased, it will not go unnoticed - they will save me. So please don't worry,"

"How can I not worry, love?" he whispered as he held her close and kissed her forehead tenderly. He was shaking.

"Let's sit down," Ellie coaxed him gently, and carefully loosed his arms from around her so that she could take a moment to lay the blanket down on the ground for them to sit on. When they were both seated, Ellie put her arms around him and held him. He was still shaking. It disturbed and saddened her to see him this way, "Don't you worry about me, okay?" she whispered tenderly in his ear.

The next thing she knew, she was pinned to the ground, and he was kissing her - even more hungrily than the kiss she remembered on the day that he had turned her. She let him kiss her, and after a moment, somewhat shyly, she began to return his kisses. He sighed ... "Ellie ..." and caressed her face and her hair as he kissed her. His kisses slowed and became deeper, more intense and the electricity that had begun when he had first started kissing her turned into a storm in her blood. She was really, deeply kissing him back now, just as hungrily as he had been kissing her at first. As the fever in her blood began to abate somewhat, her kisses slowed too and became more deliberate, and as she kissed him, she thought about him, remembering so many things, that first passionate kiss, soft nights of just standing beside the lake, held in his arms as he talked to her, his tender solicitude as he examined the fang lacerations in her mouth, reading and talking about books together, the way he always watched over her. And as she thought of all these things, she realized something that she must have already known subconsciously. She loved him. Her kisses became more hungry and intense again. What if she did die and they weren't able to save her? She had to tell him. "Mmm...' kiss ..."I think" kiss "I have something to tell you." kiss

He had her lower lip in his mouth, and without letting go, he looked into her eyes with a fierce intensity and said, through a mouthful of lip, "Can talking wait until later?"

Ellie chuckled at his possessive attachment to her lip and nodded. He smiled, still with her lower lip in his mouth, and resumed where he had left off. Some minutes later his kisses slowed and stopped and he leaned over her, looking into her eyes, "What is it that you wanted to tell me?

Ellie avoided his intense gaze. This was going to be hard to say. "I - I ... " she stammered ... "I love you."

She looked up at him, and a mixture of shock and joy lit up his face. And then, of course, there was some more kissing for a few minutes. At last, he leaned over her and kissed her tenderly and said, "So you mean I can do this -" kissing her, "anytime that I want to now?"

She nodded, blushing.

"That makes me very" kiss "very" kiss "happy." kiss

And then he pulled her up so so that she was sitting beside him again and wrapped his arms around her.

And she nuzzled his neck and whisptered, "You are my mate too."

And of course, more kissing followed that statement.

And at last, he was the one who broke away with an, "Ow! I thin-k my thlips are thswollen! You kiss very well for someone with so little experience," he said admiringly.

"I catch on quickly" she said smugly and kissed his chin softly.

"Ellie ... I never thought the day would come that you would say that you love me and that I am your mate, and that you would kiss me back," Scar said, sighing happily.

"I don't think that this evening will happen again," Ellie said sadly. "They will have to save me, and things might change somewhere along the way. But if I finally came to the realization that I love you once, I can certainly reach that conclusion again. It was already true - I just wasn't able to admit it yet."

"I'll just have to remember to make sure I kiss you again," Scar said roguishly, winking at her.

"I don't think that's the only reason why it happened - I think part of it is that we were both thinking I might disappear," Ellie said. "Nothing to worry about there - everything will be fine."

Scar kissed her again, hoping with all his heart that there really was nothing to worry about - he didn't think he'd stay alive and sane if he ever lost her.

Trying To Save Her - Alternate Future

Scar's voice was hollow, hopeless, as he asked: "What was it this time?"

The medic at his left elbow said, "I believe it was a small-scale explosive device that they forced her to swallow when they captured her. She's still alive - just barely, and I think that she wants to see you."

The medics had been first on the scene. Another attempt to erase Ellie, another attempt to save her - would they succeed this time?

Scar ran to where she lay.

"Scar ..." she whispered, "I'm cold ..." as she reached out for him - she wanted to be in his arms.

He knelt down and stroked her face tenderly. "I can't hold you now, love. You might be bleeding internally." As he surveyed the scene, his face turned white as ash. There was blood everywhere. He knew she would not survive this. She coughed and dark red blood appeared on her lips.

He started trembling as he watched her skin tone grow paler. This couldn't be happening again ... He closed his eyes for a moment - was this another nightmare, or was it real? No ... he knew it was real. The smell of blood, the feel of the rubble under his shoes, the smoke that still hung in the gray misty early morning air ...

There was a heat-loss prevention blanket used for shock treatment pulled over her battered body, but she was shivering uncontrollably - and suddenly she was crying - she reached out for his hand weakly and he took her hand in his. Through weak sobs, she said, "Why didn't I ever tell you that I love you ... Scar ... until it was too late ..."

"It's never too late, love," - he choked on the words, crying too. "We'll go back in time and try again! I know that I'll be able to save you next time - I know it!' He held her hand gently, stroking the bruised flesh tenderly. They had tortured her too ... Later, he would think about all the things that he would do to the men who had done this to her, but now, he pushed aside those thoughts - he wanted to focus on being there with her, comforting her.

She didn't survive this time either - even with a whole team of medics working on her.

Scar boarded the time machine, carrying her body tenderly.

"What harm can it do for me to carry her?! She's already dead!" he had growled savagely when the medics had tried to take her from him to carry her body up on a stretcher.

As he lifted his precious burden over the threshold of the time machine's door, the horrible irony of it took hold of his mind. He had bought a ring recently ... She had been so glad to see him every time that he came, and when he had left the terrorists to come work for Time Force, she had been overjoyed - now she would get to see him every day! He had felt certain that she would soon be saying the words, "I love you" to him - that his love would soon be reciprocated. He had hoped that someday soon, there would have been a wedding, and he would have carried her over the threshold of a honeymoon suite as his bride instead of carrying her dead body through the doorway of a time machine. His shoulders shook with sobs and he could hardly carry her, light burden though she was.

Once he laid her down on the hospital bed they had brought with them, he sank into a chair nearby and held her bruised hand in his. A medic advanced and put a blanket around his shoulders.

"Give me a sedative!" he growled savagely in response, his shoulders shaking as he buried his face in his hands and wept.

How many times had he seen her die? He had lost count already. It seemed like a nightmare eternity - endless days of her dying - of them being unable to save her. He stroked her seemingly delicate, fragile hand, recalling how strong her hands had really been. She had decked him beautifully in their most recent practice sparring match. So strong, she had been ... and so fragile ...

The sedative began to take effect, and his eyelids drooped and closed. He was still holding her hand.

As he drifted off into unconsciousness, there was only one thought in his mind - that he would keep trying and trying: until he saved her.

The next time, they were finally able to save her - after weeks of trying. Scar had nightmares about watching her die every night for a year. They didn't stop until after he and Ellie had been married for a few months and the terrorists had finally been defeated. Even after that, sometimes he still had nightmares, and he would wake up, roll over and reach out in the darkness to see if she was really still there beside him, alive and breathing. He didn't want to wake her, but sometimes she woke up anyway, and reached out for him, embraced him. She longed for the day when the shadows of the horrors he had witnessed left his eyes and his heart forever. She didn't care how many times he needed to be reassured that she was still alive. She didn't care if she woke up. She begged him to promise her that he would wake her up when he had nightmares - so that she could hold him in her arms until he fell asleep again. He promised her to ease her mind, but she had a feeling that he might always only wake her by accident when he reached out to touch her sleeping face in the darknesss. So she got in the habit of always either falling asleep with her arms around him, or asking him to fall asleep with his arms around her. She liked it better when they fell asleep with their arms around each other anyway. She believed that someday she would no longer see the pain in his eyes at times, as he remembered watching her die countless times. And eventually, the pain of those memories faded away, and there was only joy as they shared their lives together.

Something To Tell You: A Happy Ending

The day came finally - the last big battle between Time Force & the terrorists. The information Scar had fed Time Force via Ellie was instrumental in bringing down the terrorist organization. He even fought against his own former comrades on that last day, and there, too, his help had been crucial, as he knew the layout of the terrorist facility like the back of his hand. After the battle was over, Scar flew back to Time Force with the squad. When he got there, though, he felt a bit out of place. He thought, maybe he would find a place to stay in the local town, so that he could drop by and visit Ellie frequently. In the general tumult of backslapping and hurrahs as the squad disembarked from the ship and talked over the mission excitedly, no one but Ellie saw him slip away to head toward town.

"Wait ... I have something to say to you," Ellie said in a nervous, cracking voice. Scar turned around and arched an inquisitive eyebrow. "Thank you - thank you for choosing to help us. You have become a hero, Scar."

"It was all for you, Ellie - though I think I could get used to this 'hero' stuff. It's delightful to have the gratitude of the woman I love, even if she cannot love me back."

He started to walk away again, and Ellie said again, "Wait - there was something else I didn't tell you. Um, come closer ... closer ..."

When he was standing so close to her that she could feel his breath on her face, she said, "This is what I wanted most to tell you," and kissed him softly. After a moment, she pulled away, surprised that he hadn't kissed her back. When she looked up at his face, she saw that he was stunned - practically in shock.

"Oh Ellie .." he said in a tender, but somewhat incredulous voice ... "Did that really happen? Is that really how you feel?"

Ellie nodded, too overcome to speak. And all of a sudden, she was in his arms, and he was kissing her as if he'd never have another chance. But there would be many tomorrows and many, many more kisses - hundreds, thousands, millions of kisses in their future together, for the rest of their very long and very happy lives.
