The strikes of boots slapping against concrete could be heard filling the air. The sun was slowly sinking towards the horizon ready to end the day. K’Dee was running up the steps of Shibusen with a steady pace, she just wanted to get away from everything, maybe sit with Shinigami-sama and quietly drink tea with him. Doing anything silent sounded good right about now, all she wanted to do was think, and not be criticized if her thoughts decided to become words. Most all students had gone home for the evening but as the new Death Scythe came to the door she nearly bumped into a two girls walking out. Oddly enough the girl didn’t even bother to say she was sorry.
‘I Don’t understand!’ She cried at herself from the inside.
Feeling she might burst out in tears any moment K’Dee rushed to the nearest bathroom flipping the water on cold and let the sink fill up. As it did so she rested her palms on the counter staring at her reflection in the mirror, her chest moving up and down heavily from the run. A tear trickled from her eye and as the sparkly drop fell from her skin she looked down at the water and turned the faucet off, the hiss slowly coming to an end, and only leaving behind the sound of a couple water droplets before completer silence. “This isn’t Shinigami-Sama fault…” She told herself trying to convince herself, “And Kitsy! … Kushy too…. Th-They didn’t fake our friendship, did they?”
The young weapon dipped her hands into the cool liquid and brought it to her face, refreshing her instantly. Water hid the tears on her face, dripping together into the sink below. “They’re not on Asura’s side… Th-They… They just had to leave is all.”
She wasn’t entirely sure if what she was saying was correct, she really had no idea what they left for beside that fact that Kushtin had attacked Shinigami-sama and students that were there at the time. They had left s suddenly, not even given the time to say a last minute good bye. K’Dee had gone to find Kitsy one afternoon and was shocked to find she had decided to leave with Kushtin. The Death God only told her she seemed extremely upset and angry not bothering to explain why she was leaving. It hurt the girl to think that Kitsune left without a goodbye without explaining some things. How could she just leave her to find all the answers on her own.
Now on top of losing her best friends, she had become a Death Scythe. The very weapons Shinigami-sama used to destroy people and monsters like what the vixen eared girl and the Priest had become. It was very likely they would meet again, but not with a friendly reunion instead in a battle that would most likely only end with the death of the opposite party. K’Dee dreaded going to Shinigami-sama for orders, every time worrying over if then would be the time he sent her to look for them. She already killed her own father, would she have to kill her friends too?
A new batch of tears pushed forth, staining her cheeks and dripping into the water filled sink. Quietly she sobbed trying her best to fight it. “It’s so much easier to just let go and lose control.”
K’Dee’s head shot up, her eye widening, as her heart stopped momentarily. Those words. That voice. Her eye searched the mirror frantically hunting for the source, however once not finding it she quickly turned around. Nothing. No one. All that was there was just the bathroom stalls that had been there all along.
“Let go.”
The girl flinched. Her breath had become shaky. “SHOW YOURSELF!” She demanded, but the only sound was that of the dripping from the faucets. No other movement was seen or heard.
‘I’m losing it,’ She thought to herself. ‘I think I should just go home… Maybe… take a nap. Yeah, a nap sounds good.’
“It’s so much easier to lose control!” The voice shouted and thinking K’Dee had caught a glimpse of the person, her right hand quickly folded into a fist. She shut her eyes tight screaming as she swung it at the mirror where she saw the image. “NO!”
The sound of cracking glass crept through the air. And once opening her eye K’Dee noticed she did nothing but shatter the glass and cause herself to start bleeding. The red fluid slithered down the glass, making K’Dee bring her hand back to examine her newly acquired wound. “Dammit… I need to calm down…”
She glanced around the room quickly one last time before hurrying out the door and toward the Death Room.
Just back off before I snap and you'll see

K’Dee walked up the steps to the school Shibusen. She was amazed; it was so much larger than she has imagined it to be, and she had imagined it to be monstrous in the first place. The girl had moved her pack from its position on her back and was now holding it close to her chest. She was nervous and it showed. He eye averted back and forth with every sound of laughter, chatter, or food step. It almost frightened her to be around so many happy people, so many people none the less. After all, She was so used to being locked up in her small hut. Some kids gave her odd looks before smiling and asking her if she needed help with anything, while some just ignored her completely. Seemed like any other school really.
Eventually she got directions to Shinigami-sama’s Death Room. The name intimidated the girl, and once seeing the guillotine hallway she didn’t know what to do. The person who had led K’Dee there disappeared once opening the door to this strange room, and she was left to fend for herself against the guillotines. With her eye wide she pressed herself against the door staying clear of the killing devices. “H-Hello…?” She called, her voice was small and scared, but it echoed and carried through the vast space.
A red haired man then appeared at the end of the hallway and glanced her way and K’Dee flinched once seeing him, “Oi! What are you doing here?” He started her way.
Once this bizarre man was on her side of the hallway she replied. “I-I am looking for Shinigami-sama… I was told he’s here.”
The man nodded, “Yes, he’s right down there.” He pointed down the hallway.
Peaking around the man’s body and once again down the guillotine lined walkway K’Dee gulped. “come on…” He mentioned then grabbed her arm dragging her along. “WAIT NO! PLEASE! STOP!” She screamed.
At last after what seemed like forever and after thinking for sure she had just had a heart attack, K’Dee was on the other side of the guillotine hallway, alive and in one piece. She was trembling, but she had made it, with forceful help from the red haired man.
There before her stood Shinigami-sama. His skull tilted to the side as she stared back at K’Dee with his expressionless mask. An arm and hand manifested from his side which he brought to his face and placed his pointer finger to his cheek, if that’s what you would call it. “Giiiiiiii….?”
At first K’Dee was unsure of what to do, but suddenly she dropped to the floor, and knelt before him as if in a way to show him some respect. Sitting on her knees she gazed back up at him, “Shinigami-sama… I-It’s an honor to be in your presence. I am Katherine Deserae Roberts, Or K’Dee Roberts as I prefer to be called. I am a weapon and I would be eternally grateful if you let me attend your school.”
There was a long pause and K’Dee became nervous by that, she swore she even felt her eye twitch and sweat forming on her brow. It was a good thing her head was down. ‘Did I sound too much like a suck up?’ She thought, ‘How do I even talk to a God… I have no idea what I am doing!’
“You want to join my school you say?” Shinigami-sama questioned sounding thoughtful, “I see nothing wrong with that~! Although I would like to meet your parents before you start.”
“Parents…?”
“Yes… Is there something wrong with that?”
K’Dee grabbed her pillow case which she had dropped when she plopped to her knees, and held it to her. “I’m afraid they have been murdered by Pre-Kishin’s.” K’Dee looked away from the Death God.
The red haired man looked at the girl with concern. “I-I am sorry to hear that… So you have no family then?”
The girl shook her head no.
“Who were your Mother and Father?” Shinigami-Sama questioned.
“Katherine Deserae Mitchell was my mother’s maiden name and John Edward Roberts was my Father.”
“hmmmm, Katherine, she was an independent weapon, correct? Twin hooks?”
K’Dee nodded, “Yes sir…”
After another long chunk of silence Shinigami-sama spoke again, “And John… he was a meister?”
The girl flinched slightly at the mentioning of his name.“No, Sir. He’s full weapon. He was a Chain Scythe to be exact, as well as myself.”
“You didn’t get along well with your father did you?” He inquired.
Her hands pulled into fists at his comment, and her face grew grim before she slowly shook her head no.
“Shinigami-sama…”The man cautioned trying to warn the God not to ask too many questions.
“Oh-hoh Spirit, Don’t worry.” The Death God replied seeming to get his advice. “K’Dee-chan, what is that you hold in your arms?”
Her arms pulled the pillow case closer.
“May I see?”
She hesitated then nodded. The Grim Reaper took it from her and pulled out the cloth that was wrapped around the soul. He examined the bundle of fabric then opened it up, and seemed to be unsurprised while Spirit, apparently that was his name, took a step back and quickly glanced at the girl. “This is your father’s soul, is it not?”
“Yes sir…” She said quietly now tears sounding like they were choking her up.
“And you said a pre-Kishin killed your father?”
She gulped, and was slightly upset with how well he listened. “I’m sorry!” She cried, “It wasn’t my choice..I-I… I didn’t know it was a human soul, please forgive me… please!”
Spirit stared at the girl with a great amount of confusion while Shinigami-sama just nodded. “I See… Well K’Dee-chan. I don’t think you have much to worry about. You did a good deed taking care of your father, even though it may not feel like it. I can see in your soul that you regret that act, but you shouldn’t worry, you probably saved various different lives. And as for the human soul you ate…”
Spirit’s eyes flew open once hearing that, finally getting what she was apologizing for.
“You have no need to be afraid. You seem to have an incredible amount of determination to become a Death Scythe as well as seeming to be faithful to me. The bit of Kishin egg inside you has not sparked yet and I don’t think it will with how much you feel for Shibusen and your God. As long as you don’t come in direct contact with a Kishin as strong as Asura for too long, I believe that the Kishin egg inside you will remain un-active and not drive you to continue feasting off human souls.”
She nodded wiping tears from her eye.
“You will start tomorrow,” Shinigami-sama said happily, “I will have Spirit get a schedule for you right away, and I will make arrangements for your own dorm room within the school.”
The girl smiled, “What about tuition? How much do I need to pay?” She reached into her pocket and pulled out the wallet to fetch the little money she had.
“Do not worry about that. We can work something out later.”
“I can not thank you enough Shinigami-sama.”
“Oh! And one last thing, before I send you with Spirit,” He mentioned, “If you’re going to Join Shibusen you’re going to need to get used to eating souls…” He handed the girl her pillow case back, then the soul, “So eat up.”
K’Dee stared at him like he was crazy; eat her own father’s soul? How could he ask her to do something like that? Shinigami-sama just stared back, and seeing that if she didn’t she’d be there forever, she hesitantly brought it to her mouth then quickly stuffed it in, chewing it quickly before gulping it down. The taste was dry, smoky, and strong taking her breath away and leaving behind a burn like that of alcohol.
Tears streaming down her face the whole time. “Heh… Guess my dad will always be with me now, huh?” She tried joking to make herself feel better but her attempt failed.
Spirit walked up to her placing a hand on her shoulder and led her back out of the Death Room. This time K’Dee was so distracted by the fact she just ate her own father’s soul to even be able to notice she was walking beneath the guillotines, either that, or she didn’t care if they fell on her.
That night K’Dee laid on her bed staring at the ceiling, she couldn’t believe it, things were starting to look up, she’d be starting her first day of school at Shibusen tomorrow. Perhaps dreams did come true.
Just back off before I snap
Slowly the young weapon walked through the guillotine hallway, completely unconcerned about the blades that hung menacingly above her. She was so used to them now she hardly even noticed the objects. As she moved further into the nursery like room she was able to see if anyone was there. Obviously Shinigami-sama was, he stood on his platform carefully studying the mirror like screen he used to watch situations outside of Shibusen. Spirit must have been away, for the abnormal man was no where to be seen. K’Dee silently stepped up behind the Death God allowing a good distance to separate them to be sure not to startle him, although she guessed he already new she was there. The young woman held her right hand firmly with her left hoping to stop the bleeding as she waited for the odd figure to turn.
“I’m glad you came K’Dee-chan,” Shini-sama greeted once the picture on the mirror faded and he faced her, “I was just about to sit down for some tea.” He paused once noting her bleeding hand. “Uh-oh! What happened there?”
“Tea sounds nice…” The young Death Scythe smiled, it was exactly what she was hoping for. “Oh, and this?” She raised her hand that she held in the other and nodded her head toward it before lowering it down again. “Had a little accident… and… You might want to have someone replace the mirror in the girl’s bathroom, heh.” She blushed grinning shyly.
“My, my. Alright,” Despite K’Dee breaking the glass he sounded up beat and happy, “I will have someone get on that right away. But~! I have one question, is something bothering you?”
K’Dee’s posture slouched slightly, her expression becoming a bit irritated; curse Shinigami-sama’s ability to read souls.
“Your soul feels shaky and confused, maybe even a little afraid.” He tilted his skull mask to the side, his jubilant tone becoming concerned. He also took into observation the fact that her soul was struggling to control the tiny Kishin egg inside her, however he was not about to tell her that. “Sit, so we can talk.”
Nodding, K’Dee turned and was surprised to see a table with hot tea on it sitting low to the ground in front of her. ‘I don’t remember that being there a second ago,’ Although it didn’t bug her long seeing as she was in the presence of a Death God. Plus, she could’ve just not noticed someone bring it in while she was distracted by her beginning conversation with Shinigami-sama.
Both took a seat across from each other sitting on a pillow that rest on the floor. Hands manifested from the Gods sides and he poured K’Dee a cup then one for himself before placing the tea pot back down on the table. The tea was relaxing, as the girl took a sip it warmed her up from the inside out calming her from her paranoid state. “Kushtin and Kitsune are on my mind. I… Don’t understand why they left, and why they would betray you and Shibusen.”
Shinigami-sama stared at her a long moment with the empty black holes he had for eyes, “Kushtin left because he was banished from Death City.” His voice seemed extremely serious, almost frightening to the young girl, “He can’t be trusted now that his soul can be broken down so easily, however it wasn’t exactly his choice that he became a Kishin. And Kitsune…” He paused, “All she said was she was doing what she thought was right.”
K’Dee nodded and sighed. Doing what was right, huh? How could you really tell what the right thing to do was now-a-days? With all the chaos and insanity in the world there really was no telling who was right or who was wrong. She just hoped Kitsy’s leaving wasn’t because of Elana or herself for that matter.
“Is that all that’s bothering you? When I asked… I thought it had to do with your father,” Shinigami-sama dared to bring up.
“I guess this betrayal, brings up old memories a bit. I haven’t had something this upsetting happen since I was a little girl,” She took a sip of her tea, Shini-sama doing the same as he listened to his new solider talk, “And to think my Friend is becoming the same thing my Father was… it hurts… and scares me.”
The Death God nodded, “That’s completely understandable.” While she explained he was keeping a close eye on her soul and the Kishin egg that pulsed trying to make her lose control. ‘What’s causing the kishin egg within her to become active, she should be fine but why is she not?’
There was an extremely long pause, both thinking to themselves while the sat quietly enjoying their tea. At least fifteen minutes had passed before any words were said again. “I hate to bring this up at a time like so, but I have another order for you.”
K’Dee tried to look calm while on the inside she was beyond nervous.
“I need to have you keep an eye out of Kushtin and Kitsune, please scout the area visit any towns and cities within a 100 mile radius and ask around for news or sightings of the two, we will not attack them, but incase Kushtin loses control again and if we need to take more actions to protect people we will know where he is at. And as always, if you see a pre-kishin soul, take care of it. If you happen upon a witch or Kishin, inform us immediately.”
K’Dee lowered her head; that was exactly the order she didn’t want although new she’d eventually receive. The girl stood up the tea cup still in her hand. “I suppose I better head on home, I will go out first thing tomorrow morning so I will need some rest.”
“Shinigami-sensei…” A small boy’s voice called.
He stood at the entrance to the guillotine hallway, scarves hung around his neck suspending themselves in the air like some sort of serpents. The boy had dark hair and the cutest eyes. Over all he was the kind of child any person would squeal over because of his adorableness. However a strange aura emitted from the child. At first glance you might not recognize him, but with a hard look you could observe the three eyes on his scarves, and see that this child was infact Asura, the Demon God, however by some odd reason as a child, a child that had found his way to the present through time and space from the past.
K’Dee stared, her pupil dilating along with the cup falling from her hand and shattering on the ground. She blinked several times soft quiet whimpers escaping from her. Her body trembled violently, and Shinigami-sama seeing what affect the insane aura from the young boy had on the girl stood up. “Asura! Please, wait outside!” He ordered as she kept his eyes on K’Dee.
The girl lowered her head, shadows covering her eye as a smile twitched and jerked up on her face. “Kishin-sama….?” Her voice squeaked quietly.
The young Asura, becoming a tad bit frightened by the girl’s odd presence, fled from the room, her soul slowly returning to normal the further away he got. K’Dee fell to her knees her body seeming limp like puppeteer-less doll. Gradually she lifted her head appearing dazed. “Wh-What was that…?”
Shinigami-sama stared down at her, he thought she would be safe from becoming a Kishin. But now his theory seemed to be wrong. Her friends leaving and the upsetting feelings she held within must have been what was causing her to become weak against the monster within her. Her happiness and self esteem was depleting giving the kishin egg more power. He couldn’t lose another Death Scythe to his enemy. The consequences would be dire.
“Hold off on my orders, K’Dee. I need to work with you a little more before your ready to be around any level of Kishin Madness…”
