STORY TIME~!
I know Im different. I try to be good though. No one likes me—Im alone here. The other kids at the orphanage tease me. They call me names. The older people talk about me too. They say I dont belong in this world. Im only twelve, but I understand everything. Some people say Im gifted for my age, but others say Im a curse. A wicked, evil child. Is it wrong to have the eyes that I have? Is it wrong to bleed, and make something new?
I can see peoples names above their heads along with strange numbers. I asked a grownup what that meant and they said I was cursed. Why am I so different? Why cant I be normal, and fit in with everyone else? So I wouldnt have to sit alone everyday.
But I know someone out there loves me. Someone will one day. And when they do, Ill keep them forever
Again, today I sit alone in the corner watching the other kids play. I scribble down the rest of my drawing. I like art. The others dont like to draw with me though. I was drawing the girl that comes in every other day to see L. I think theyre ex-stepsiblings. But shes younger than me. She ten. But I like her. Shes nice to me.
Someone snatched the paper from my hands, making a long line cross through my paper where my pencil was. Aw. I would have to erase that later.
Ooooh! Someones got a crush on Kia! The kid teased, waving the picture in my face.
Give it back, please, I asked nicely, reaching out to take the paper. My fingers brushed the edges and he yanked it away. Ha, ha! Im gonna show everyone!
I gasped. If everyone took my drawing the wrong way like he did, theyd have more to tease me about.
No! Give it back! I rushed after the boy and tripped him, me falling on his back.
Ow! Get off me you freak! He yelled, bringing the other kids attention to us. He pulled his elbow back and it hit me in the face. I bit a part of his arm by accident and he started crying. He ran off—my picture falling to the floor, not six feet away. I was about to pick it up when someone else did. I pulled my head up to face the person, but my picture was in the way, so I couldnt see her head. But L was standing next to her and that made me feel really bad. If it was Kia, I would die of embarrassment. She would most likely take it the wrong way too.
This is cute! Did you draw this? Oh! Is it me? She pulled the paper from her face and, sure enough, it was Kia. Her green eyes glistened as she smiled warmly.
L looked at me weirdly.
Its mine, I replied, Can I have it back now?
Oh, sure, She said handing me the picture. I hid my face in embarrassment.
B, is that any way to treat a lady? The man who watched us, Watari, scolded.
N-No sir.
Come with me. You need to be punished.
Oh, no, hes okay! He didnt hurt my feelings or anything sir, Kia corrected.
Well then, he needs to be punished for biting this young boy. He pushed the little kid forward who stole my picture. He glared at me, sniffling. Look what you did to me, you freak! The kid held out his arm. Blood was seeping out of a wound that I supposedly made. Butbut I-I didnt mean to hurt him!
Too bad! The kid scoffed.
Go on and play now, Watari encouraged the young boy. Now, come along B.
I folded up the paper and stuck it in my pocket as I followed the old man. I took one parting glance at Kia, who was staring sadly at me. I waved slightly, and she smiled, waving back.
--
That was seven years ago. Im now nineteen. I barely remember her, spare my silly drawing that I keep in my pocket. Ive become a serial killer. The numbers floating above peoples heads are their dates of death. I kill only the people who are going to die the same day.
My home was everywhere, but mostly an alleyway that led to a path to some lot of houses. I was fiddling with my fingers when a girl turned the corner to my alleyway she was walking right next to me. I moved my foot slightly, the noise carrying, stopping her cold. She breathed in and out slowly, wondering what to do next. I grabbed my knife and stood up, stumbling in front of her.
Her scream pierced my ears as she ran back the way she came. But I caught her before she could escape, the cold blade pressed against her neck.
Do it, she spat. Just do it.
I looked blankly at the red numbers above her head. You are not meant to die today, I replied and took the blade away, holding onto her arm. I glanced at the name once more.
Kia. This was Kia. I reached into my pocket and briefly touched the piece of paper.
--
My name is Kia Lawliet. I have medium black hair that goes to my waist, and bangs that go to my shoulders with green eyes. You dont need to know much more than that. Today was a rather depressing day, and I dont feel like talking about myself right now. But do you want to know why Im depressed? Well, why dont we back up a little and youll see what happened.
Ryuuzaki, I need to talk to you, I whispered. L is my half brother so we are very close to each other. So I knew he would hear me out.
His co-worker looked up from the computer screen. She called herself Suki, although I doubt that was her real name.
And what would that be Katie? He was careful to call me something else, so Kira would not find out my name.
Itssomething importantIve been meaning to tell you this for a while My cheeks flushed pink.
Tell me then. He moved his body so he was looking at me. Suki was listening too, although she was trying to focus on her work. He motioned me to continue. So I did. I told him how I really felt—how much I really loved him. Not just in a family way. I saw the corners of his mouth tug upwards—hope welling in my chest. I had thought he liked me that way too. But no. He thought it was funny. His younger half-sister had a crush on him. Adorable right? Wrong.
Suki stared at me in awe.
Thats cute, Katie, but this is no time for love.
He turned back to his work and left me to revel in my misery. I turned and walked out of the room. Suki shook her head and stared at her hands. You didnt have to turn her down like that. You should have seen her face after you looked away. She shook her head again, before typing things in on the computer.
But I had to say something. I have feelings for someone else.
You said this was no time for love! She gasped.
Yes, well, I might have stretched the truth a bit, He admitted. And THATS why Im having a horrible day.
The others in the room werent really listening to their conversation. Just talking to each other about what they should do. They called the two over. They had found a new criminal. Yes, and his name was Beyond Birthday.
It was nearing dark, but I had no intentions of going to my home. But, my father was expecting me tonight. So I have to go to his house. I looked down a dark alleyway. It was my shortcut to his house.
I walked about halfway down the path before I heard something move next to my feet. I stood frozen. There had never been anything down here before! Of course, the last few times I took this route was in the daytime, and the sun had just set over the horizon. Tremors shook my body as I stood there in fear. The noise grated across the ground in front of me and I screamed. Feeling no desire to go to my dads house anymore, I bolted back to the way I came. Something caught me as I was about to round the corner to the dark alley and make my escape.
Something cold and metallic was placed by my throat. That was it. The person behind me was going to cut my throat with the long knife that looked so deadly in their hands.
Do it, I hissed. Just get it over with.
The person dropped the knife from my throat but held on to my arm so I couldnt get away. But youre not meant to die today, The person whispered. It was definitely a boy but he sounded exactly like L. The thought of L trying to kill me sent tears stinging to my eyes. I let them fall, hoping he would not notice.
Why are you crying, dear? Supposed L asked, an evil edge to his tone.
You should know, I hissed.
I should know?
Youre the reason.
He turned me around, and from what I could tell, he was definitely not L. True, he looked exactly like him, but I could tell. Ruby red eyes stared back at me, almost sorry for the problem. For trying to kill you? I guess that would upset you.
I shook my head. No, I thought you were someone else.
Of course.
May I make it up to you for wasting your time? I asked.
His lips pressed into a thin line. Maybemaybe you could come back here tomorrow. I want to see you again.
I was surprised that this killer wanted to see me again. The only reason I could think of is for sex or for money. But the kind look he gave me, made me think otherwise.
YesokayIll meet you at six
(Because yes, Kia now befriends random strangers who try to kill her)
--
I cursed under my breath. It was already nearing six and I was lost. I couldnt remember which alley he was supposed to be in. I stopped in one that looked familiar, and there he was. He was sitting down, legs stretched out. But what freaked me out was the dark red blood splattered on his shirt and face. So was the knife he tried to kill me with, laying lazily by his hand. He tilted his head at me, and stared in surprise. You came, He whispered. Like he thought I wasnt going to come.
Yes.
I stepped forward and sat by him. My name is Beyond Birthday, but you can call me B if youd like.
By now, his likeliness to L was getting a bit ridiculous.
UmImKatie, I lied. He could be Kira.
No youre not.
How do you know?
I have shinigami eyes. I can see your real name. Youre Kia Lawliet.
I gasped. Shinigami eyes? That was impossible. I gazed into his ruby red eyes and thought differently. I tried to look at something else—save myself from embarrassment. I ended up looking at his bloodstains, and felt my stomach twist uneasily. Something wrong?
I didnt answer but he seemed to know. If I hadnt been staring at his shirt I wouldnt have noticed him reaching down and pulling his shirt over his head. My face flushed red and I looked away. Better? He asked. I flushed again but answered, Just fine, Beyond. He laughed with and evil tone before wiping the blood off his face. Well, at least youre honest.
--
I had been visiting Beyond for the past few weeks.
He seemed really nice—never even thinking of hurting me. He was always careful with what he said. Careful not to upset me in any way. I had brought over a jar of jam for him one day, and apparently it became his favorite snack. I always laughed when he ate it—acting like hes never eaten before in his life.
I was heading over to the alley now to bring him his snack. I waited for the crossing signal to turn green. I looked over my shoulder to see a man sitting by the side of a building—eyes locked on me. Feeling panicked, I looked away. The signal turned green and I quickly rushed across the street. I got to his alleyway quickly. I just had to step around the corner
Hey there sweetie, The low, brass voice called behind me. A rough hand hit my shoulder. I turned to see the same man from before.
Feeling a tad bit scared that I had just been basically stalked, I stepped back. Im sorry, but I must be going now, I finished. Why the rush?
I gasped as he put his arms around my waist. Why dont you come back with me and well have some fun
I was truly scared now, and driven by the pure need for him (that wasnt a rapist) I screamed, Beyond! There were shuffling sounds in the alleyway. Then the sound of metal scraping concrete—heavy footfalls. Then his face peered out, ruby red eyes gleaming with anger.
Oh so youve got a friend The man mumbled.
Beyond, I whispered. Help meplease
He moved with such quick agility that I missed it. I was pushed away from the man and into the alleyway. Beyond grabbed the man and pulled out the knife he tried to kill me with, sending shivers down my spine. You arent meant to die todaybut I must kill you
He took the shiny metal knife and rammed it into the mans chest. I gasped in horror, but tried to keep myself quiet. I dont know how long he stabbed the man or how many times. I had long since crawled back into the alleyway—the horror becoming too much for me to bear. He shoved the man somewhere inconspicuous and came to sit by my side. I tried not to look at the blood that stained his clothes and face. You look like you just saw a ghost, He said.
Im just a little scared from that stalker. It wasnt totally a lie.
--
Come with me, Beyond ordered to me the next day.
Why? I whispered.
He stood still, staring at the entrance to the alley. Then people came into view. Three people I could put names to. Light Yagami, Suki, andLthe others from the Kira case were here too. They pointed their guns to Beyond.
Katie, L whispered. He was utterly horrified at the thought of Beyond sitting next to me. Thinking he kidnapped me.
Again, Beyond was too fast for me to register, and I was on his back and he was running. I turned my head to see Ls horrified face, along with the others.
Kia! He yelled, before running down the path himself with Suki and the police following.
Beyond was much faster then them, though.
He hid with me in a run-down factory—keeping a close eye on the window. Beyond, whats going on? He flinched and kept his gaze away from me. Beyond?
II cant tell you.
Why?
Because I know exactly what youd say.
I shook my head, putting my hand on his cheek. No, you dont know that.
Youd scream monster! Then youd leave, and I dont want that.
What did you do?
Theyre here, He sighed. Theyre trying to get in.
He turned to me and hugged me. Its going to be okay, Beyond. I sighed. Youre not going anywhere, and neither am I. He shook his head. No, you dont know that.
He put his hands on either side of my face and he kissed me. I was shocked, but kissed him back. Right now, I didnt care what the others saw. I heard the door open and Beyond was instantly yanked away from me. I whimpered, hand reaching out to get him back, but L had restrained me from doing so. Light was trying to restrain the fighting boy. Dont TOUCH her! Ill kill you! Beyond yelled.
Should we kill him now? Matsuda asked.
No! No, dont touch him! I screamed.
Whats wrong with you! L cried.
I think he drugged her!
Hold on, Katie! One of the policemans hand rose up.
My head snapped to the side as his hand came down hard across my face. Beyond was now in total rage. Get AWAY FROM HER! He yelled kicking Light enough to where he could escape. He was going for the person that had slapped me first. Someones hand came up and smacked him in the head with their gun. His body fell to the floor, unconscious. Dont hurt himplease I begged. Stop hurting him!
Something sharp stung my left arm. Thats funnyI dont remember getting hit therebut light faded from my eyes and I fell unconscious too.
--
I shot straight up, remembering the memories from before. Beyond? I cried, knowing he probably wasnt going to be there.
Hes here, L said quietly. I looked at the computer screen he was showing me, and there was Beyond, in the prison cell he used with Light.
I gasped and rushed over to him. Isuppose you want to see him then L continued.
Yes! I do!
Matsudatake her to him.
Yes, sir!
He took me to a room that was rather small. It had another room inside with iron bars lining the entrance. Beyond looked up from the floor, and sighed in relief. I rushed over to him and cupped his face in my hands. Youre okay! I sobbed.
He kissed my forehead. Would I ever leave you?
