'Ouch.', Evelyn thought. 'That really hurt...' The pain unleashed its full blow, leaving her gasping for air. Suddenly the pain began to fade. 'Why is everything black? Am I blind? Is this a dream...?' Her mind began to wander through all sorts of questions. She was interrupted by the cool feeling of a hand on her forehead.
"Shhhh." A relaxing voice, much too fuzzy, soothed her. It kinda sounded... familiar. "...It will be alright, Evelyn. I know you're afraid. Don't be afraid. I'm here. Mommy's here..."
"Mom, please... Don't leave me... again." She begged, feelings of tears streammed down her face, though they were imaginary. She hated it when her mom treated her like a child; And now she wanted her mother more than anyone. But she could never see her again.
"Don't be afraid. Never be afraid..." The voice began to waver. And with that, it trailed off.
"But I am afraid... without you, Mom..." Her own voice trailed off in gasps as she choked on her own grief. She couldn't face the world alone. Not without her mother.
Evelyn's heart was pierced by what she knew she was facing- a lifetime alone. She was alone, but she couldn't accept it. The only role model she ever had, the only person she'd ever known, slipped between her fingers like sand. All that was left was the grit of sorrow and pain.
