My feet led me across the border, though I didn't know it until I smelt a wolf in the distance. At first I didn't recognize the scent-- it'd been so long since I'd smelt my kind. But when I did my remote sense of comfort vanished as I realized what danger I'd be in if they knew who I was. I crouched low but did not morph as they plodded into view. A large grey/blue wolf with brown eyes emerged and its eyes seemed surprised as he happened upon me. I stood and spoke softly, but with authority, "Show yourself."
A mental probe pushed itself into the open mind space between us.. Do you promise on your life you will not harm me?
I nodded, "You need not have worry... show yourself."
The wolf unmorphed and in its place stood a man slightly older than me with chocolate eyes and short, yet messy black hair. He stood tall and he wasn't ridiculously toned like the vampires, which was pleasing to my eye for a change of body physique. He was only wearing a pair of worn out denim shorts and I looked at him somewhat awkwardly. Although, that made me a hypocrite, after all I was garbed in shimmering clothes made from god knows what.He didn't take a step forward but spoke from where he was standing, "Why couldn't I smell you from far away?"
He stepped closer and sniffed, "You smell like..." His eyes flicked towards me filled with anger and he had me pinned in seconds, his voice rough, "Vampires. I should kill you right here Heretic."
I looked at him with an eyebrow raised, "Heretic?"
He growled, "Yes, you betrayed your own race. You're sick." He spat next to my head.
I turned my head to the side and sighed, "Don't make me hurt you."
He laughed, "You couldn't if you tried."
My voice was bitter, "What are you doing out here alone anyways? I, unlike you, have an excellent sense of smell."
He stood firm, "I have friends who know where I am."
I smirked, "Well that leaves me quite a bit of time to do what I please with you doesn't it?"
He jumped up, "I can beat you into the dust."
I propped myself up on my elbows and raised an eyebrow, "Oh really?" I stood up slowly and looked at him evily, "Don't you think the vampires picked me for a reason? They wouldn't pick a run-of-the-mill fighter... well, unless they had a secret talent."
I laughed, "My talent. Little pup, is to make creatures scream for mercy while my blood lust takes control and my teeth sink into warm flesh."
He surprised me with his bravery and he spoke calmly, "I know you won't harm me unless I act first, so let's sit a while and talk, shall we?"
I looked at him weirdly and then turned my back, "I don't have to consent to that offer."
He laughed, "You should. My friends will come if I call for them."
I looked at him over my shoulder, "Very well." I sat down in front of him with my arms crossed and huffed slightly, "Talk
He sat back and that annoyed me to see him so obviously with the upper hand in the situation, but he continued, "What's your name. your full name.." I brushed it off and answered speedily, "Sakir Serah Sorde."
He smiled, "So you are the Heretic.."
I rolled my eyes, "I guess, although I don't go by the Heretic."
He raised an eyebrow, "Why do you act so confident? You're technically in enemy territory, being seen by an enemy, talking to an enemy, and sitting two feet away from an enemy."
I shrugged, "I don't get scared easily."
He looked off to the side, "So why do you fight for them. They want to kill us all off."
I looked at him, "You don't know what you're talking about. This war is messed up.. we shouldn't be fighting in it."
He retorted, "You're a hypocrite. You're fighting in the war."
I got in his face, "You're an idiot, that's why I ran away, because I wasn't fighting for my own sake, this war is pointless and is costing lives, and my heart is broken."
regretted saying aloud the last phrase but the man pushed it aside in his mind and stood up, "Why did the vampires want you to fight for them?"
I looked up at him with fiery eyes, "That is a question I will not answer."
He looked down at me, "Come with me, I'll take you to our camp. It's somewhere to stay, and I won't tell anyone your secret."
I backed up slightly, "How can I trust you?" He grabbed my torso suddenly and slung me over his shoulder, saying amid my furious poundings of his back, "Well you don't really have a choice in that matter."
I quickly grew tired of punching his iron-like back and hung like a dead weight, cursing under my breath, "You should just kill me, I won't tell anyone anything." He set me down with a huff and pointed a finger in my face, "You need to believe that I don't want to hurt you Heretic--- Sakir."
I buried my face in my hands, "How much farther?" I could hear the smile in his voice, "We're here."
I opened my eyes, my hands flying to my lap, and looked around at the humble cluster of tents in a clearing. A couple of younger teenage guys rambled out like boyish puppies to greet the man and shouted from across the clearing in raucous voices, "Hey Darren! DAHHRENNN!"
The first boy to reach us didn't even notice me until I shifted in my position, to which he wildly turned to me then looked back at Darren, "Who's she?"
He shook his head, "No one George.."
The rest of the boys attacked him in like manner, and when they were done, did a thorough inspection of my looks from all angles, remarking, "She doesn't look like a nobody Darren... She's wearing clothing I've never seen before. Where's she from?"
I stood up, brushing myself off "A long way away."
I started to walk towards the tents but looked back at Darren, "Those your friends? Not much protection."
He said somewhat sourly, "No, they're not my friends. They're my students--- And let me introduce you."
A throng of people gathered in the center of the tents and Darren announced my arrival, my name, and the reason I was here... all tinkered with however. I was ready to sprint out of the place at moment's notice but Darren didn't breathe a word of who I really was. I was greeted nonchalantly by most people and Darren pointed me to a tent, "We'll share and I'll get you some clothes."
I balked at this and began to protest but he brushed me off, "Look, I'm not meaning anything by this and its either my tent or outside."
I groaned and wandered about the outside of the camp while Darren went off on his own duties.
I wandered around to a meeting board of sorts in the center of the camp with announcements posted on it. There was one with me on it... well, a bad depiction of me. The picture was of a snarling grey wolf with blue eyes, and next to it a picture that looked so unlike me, I was astounded. I sighed and decided that to be safe I wouldn't morph while staying here, just because I was so unusual looking, it might leave an imprint in some people's minds.
I was grateful for Darren's tent because it grew much colder in the wolves' lands than where the vampires resided. He gave me a simple brown dress and tan soft leather shoes. He asked me questions about my past while I laid staring at the ceiling, and I answered with my thoughts as to not have anyone overhear our conversation. He then talked, very quietly about his love for this small community and how these Weres were worth being saved, as well as many other innocent victims. I spoke the same for the vampires and he listened, and while not fully persuaded, began to see the situation the way I saw it.
He spoke through thoughts with his next question, and it differed very strongly from the others.. So how was your heart broken...
I turned away from him, I don't want to talk about this.
He turned away as well but continued to throw his thoughts at me, I bet your wolf form is strange. That's why you never morphed.
I shrugged, I don't usually morph whenever I feel like it, and yes, you are right, which is why I won't morph here.
I could feel the fabric move beneath his head as he nodded and continued, Is the heart break raw?
I sighed, Heart break is always raw Darren.
I felt his hand touch mine and I drew it away, You just met me.
He turned and whispered out loud this time, "I'm not making a move on you, I'm just trying to be a friend, because it seems like you need one right now."
I whispered back, "I have friends, I just left them, I don't need you to hold my hand."
He rolled his eyes and turned over with a slight growl, "Fine. Hold your bitterness and contempt for everything even though I'm saving your a** and trying to be a good person."
I turned over and sighed, "Didn't you ever think that there was no other way for me to be to survive this heartbreak in one piece?"
I sat up for a second, "I'm trying to stop this war."
I laid back down again, "Whether I die trying or not."
