I managed to make it to another gold star in my goal! Of course I have NO IDEA how I'm going to manage the other 350 miles before the year is done, but hey! I got a gold star! Happy!
My recent addiction has been buying Harry Potter doujinshi on eBay. Oh, I love the Harry Potter kids and well, all the characters actually. But I have some problems with doujinshi in general.
1. It is in Japanese. Yes, yes, I studied Japanese but do I remember any of it? Nein. See, I remember more high school German than Japanese. Sad... But I suppose this will encourage me to relearn it, so it's not so bad.
2. It is $$$! But this isn't so bad because I am terribly picky. A manageable addiction.
3. Slash?! Um, no... Unlike most fan girls I am not into the boy love. Now, I don't mind it if the characters are supposed to be gay. Actually if they are, I would happy happy buy this kind too, but not if they aren't. Yeah, okay so I'm weird that way. I would say that 90% of doujinshi are slash.
4. Teacher/Student relationships. AAAAAaaaAAaaaH! NOOOO! *cries* Why, oh why? I do not want to see Snape and Hermione anymore than I want to see Snape and Harry. Please, please no. Severus Snape is my FAVORITE character but he is always portrayed as some kind of victim or deviant. I do not wish to see any of the children being in adult situations whether it is with an adult or with each other. No, no, no.
And that is my biggest complaint about doujinshi. Loli (child molestation) and rape are always so stunningly drawn that it is hard to not admire the artwork, even if the subject makes you queasy. I worry that if it's being drawn so beautifully that it doesn't somehow glorify those things and in doing so make them almost socially acceptable. I wonder if people even realize that they are doing that when they depict violent scenes in a beautiful way. I wonder if people that look at them and buy them realize how their own morality is being desensitized or, even worse, manipulated.
Sigh...
I could go on and on about it, but I won't, at least not today. So other than those things, I love (with hearts in my eyes) doujinshi. I love that another fan somewhere took time to make a beautiful piece of artwork and story to feed my incessant addiction while I wait (not so patiently) for the next book and movie to come out.
You know what else I love? Eating caramel apples in October.
