Namine ran off to her next class when we reached the Fire class room, still leaving me under the weight of what she last said.
What did she mean? I glanced over at Roxas who was talking to Axel Slyver, the teacher. How could someone like someone else too much? Maybe it was just a inside joke….
“Hnnn.” My head hit the desk, I didn’t want to think too much right now, especially about things I don’t understand and people I don’t know. It hurt…
“Something wrong?” I heard Roxas slide into the seat next to me.
“Head hurts.” I grunted, it wasn’t a lie.
“Do you want to go to the nurse?”
“Hnnn, no…I get these a lot.” Also wasn’t a lie. Maybe there was something wrong with my brain? Maybe I had a tumor…how ironic, if I died from something like cancer and not…
“You sure?”
“Yeah.” I threw my head back, so I could see the ceiling. There was a burn mark right above my head, not surprising. Axel got…energetic…sometimes.
“Uh, should I be scared of Mr. Slyver?” Roxas leaned back in his chair to stare at the same blemish in the ceiling that I was.
“Nah. He’s harmless unless you fall asleep or he doesn’t like you. Then you might get fired.” ‘Fired’ was the term we used when Axel threw a ball of fire at someone. It was quite funny when it wasn’t you.
“Hm. Maybe this class I’ll stay awake for…”
“Maybe then you’ll live through the year.”
Roxas gave me a level crystal blue look. “ Is there something you want to tell me? You looked like you wanted to say something to me this morning.”
I blinked several times. I don’t know…did I? I don’t remember that. Oh well. “Nah. I don’t remember if I did. Sorry.” OH WAIT!! I REMEMBER!! “Oh Yeah, why did you guys move here?”
“ Hm…well, where I use to live they didn’t have a school for vamps. So we looked into schools and chose here. It seemed the nicest. And so far it is.” Roxas gave a little grin.
Is there a hidden meaning? “That’s good.” I nodded in general agreement to his happiness. It was the easiest answer for me to give, what people expect. Do what they expect and no one questions you, that was my motto. I hate when people started asking too many questions, and normally I treated people as if they felt the same way.
“What are the other teachers like?” Roxas asked. I wasn’t sure if he was really interested or if he was just trying to make conversation. He seem to treat everything he said with careful consideration…which is weird for a teenager.
“Ah… Cloud, the gym teacher is nice…but he doesn’t say much and if you do something against the rules he gives you really weird detentions…Zexion teaches Magical History. His classes are cool because he loves history, and you can tell he loves what he does. Demnyx teaches Water and if he likes your class he’ll bring in his guitar to play. Cid is the Air teacher and is a loud drunk. Those are the best teachers I think. After today you may have your own preferences.”
“Maybe.” Roxas leaned forward, his chair making a loud clunk when the legs finally reconnected with the ground. “ Maybe I’ll like them just as much as you do.”
“Yeah.” That’s kind of a weird thing to say.
==================================
I walked into the school’s courtyard. School already ended for the day and I was looking for Kosuke, he said he would be here by four so I came a bit early. No one else was here, or at least I couldn’t see them, there could have been ghosts or something…not like I believe in them but when one is like me it‘s only right to have an open mind.
My ears picked up the sound of movement and I turned, expecting my friend…
“Hey kitten.”
…but it was the Pennya brothers. Kadaj gave me a feral wolfy grin.
“Oh great. Dogs…” I snorted.
“We’re here to pay you back for yesterday.” Azoo said, his voice calm, like he did this everyday…oh wait…he did.
“I’m gonna ground you into the dirt!” Loz snapped.
“Bring it dog boy.” I snarled.
“Oh! Kittie talks big!.” Loz took two thundering steps towards me and swung. It connected with my cheek, I was on the ground without any idea how I got there and dully thinking that my jaw was broken. A jolting kick to the stomach brought the sense back to me…and sent me sprawling on the ground once again.
“Kitten doesn’t talk all high and mighty now.” Kadaj walked over to me, his insane grin still on his face. He kicked me over and stepped on my chest. “Now all he does is whimper.”
“WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING!?”
All three of the werewolves turned to the new voice. Roxas was running over to us, the look on his face was undeniable and extreme fury. “GET THE ******** OFF HIM!” He grabbed Kadaj by his shirt and slammed him into a tree. Kadaj coughed, hard, like his lungs got crushed or something. Loz ran up to the vampire but Roxas spun around and slashed his face. The werewolf stumbled back in surprise, Roxas grabbed Kadaj’s shirt tighter and flung him at Loz. They both slammed into the ground with a crunch.
“Get out of here before I really lose it.” Roxas snarled. His fangs were fully extended and flashing with a metallic luster, eyes like ice glared at them.
Azoo picked them up, his eyes locked on Roxas. “You’ll regret this.” His calm voice not betraying his anger.
“I highly doubt that.” He said in an equally scary calm voice. He bent down to me. I leaned against a tree for support, the kick to my stomach still hurt like a b***h. “Can you walk? We should get you to the nurse.”
“Fine.” I rasped. God my stomach hurt. At least they didn’t break bones this time. I tried to get up, but the muscles in my stomach convulsed and I sat back down. “Oww…”
“Your not fine.” Roxas scooped me up, like I was a pillow or something. “Let’s get you to the nurse.”
“WHA?! HEY! Put me down!” I gasped. No one had ever gotten this close to me besides Kosuke. “Stoooooop!”
“Jeez! Your acting like I’m molesting you or something! You can’t walk so I’m helping. Relax.” Roxas’s grip on me tightened, as if he thought I would try to jump out of his arms…which I wanted to do.
God this was embarrassing! I was getting carried around like a girl. “Don’t expect me to thank you…”
“Oh…I don’t.” It sounded like he was smiling…
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
“WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT???!”
I cringed at Kosuke’s yell. “Oww…sensitive ears…” I flattened them to my head, hoping that it would stop the ringing.
“Sorry, but really? It’s only the second day! Those bastards.” Kosuke ran into us in the hallways when Roxas took me to the nurse. After getting bandaged up (My stomach was one huge bruise) we went back to Roxas’s and my dorm.
“Roxas handed their asses to them already.” I said, pointing at the vampire.
“Thank you…” He said. “Though I’m still gonna beat them.”
“I wouldn’t want it any other way.” I chirped. I could always count on Kosuke being on my side.
“Hate to break this up, but Tsubasa needs rest.” Roxas said. “The body heals the most during sleep.”
“Yeah. Your right.” Kosuke nodded. “See you tomorrow Tsu.”
“ Bye.” I said. “See you.”
We both watched Kosuke leave. When the door shut Roxas turned to me.
“You okay?”
“Fine.” I sighed. Easy question, easy answer.
“I’ve been wondering…what’s that?” He pointed at me…I don’t know which part.
“What’s what?”
“On your throat.”
“Wha?” I put my hand on my collar bone and felt it. I knew what he was talking about now. “UH! Um…I had an accident when I was little.” I pulled up my collar to cover the scar.
“ It looks like your throat was torn or something! Or really bad rope burn.”
“Like I said. Accident.”
Roxas stared at me with a crystalline gaze. “When you want to tell me the truth I’ll listen.”
I stared at him in surprise. My lie didn’t work? It worked for everyone, even Kosuke. “That was the truth.” I buried myself under my covers.
“Like I said before. I want to know the truth eventually.” I heard him snap of the lamp on our desk and climb up onto the top bunk.
I stared out into the darkness. I couldn’t tell any one about the scar’s origin. Most people didn’t even know I had a scar around my neck. I sighed and shut my eyes, I’ll just have to hope he forgets.
