My first Doctor Who was Pertwee and my only exposure to the first two was a movie I saw once and some clips. The library got in onre hartnell DvD so I'm giving it a try. The production values are painful even by Who standards. O.o You can actually see the camera people trying to adjust focus during shots. I expected the cheesey sets and effects of course, and given the budget and period it was made, it's not that bad.
I have heard Hartnell nostalgia all my life, but I'm... not really warming to his Doctor. He's very... 1960's, very I am the authority and I will ignore any evidence that doesn't suit my theories, irascible and batty rather than charming. I can see seeds of later Doctors, particularly Eccleston, though I can spot some seeds of Pertwee and Baker too. there is sexism too, but given it's period of manufacture, it could have been soooo much worse, and at least the women are fully clothed.
If there were more at the library, I'd likely watch them, but I no longer feel like I missed something.
In retrospect, I think the most startling thing is that this doctor starts yelling and threatening aliens before trying to negotiate.
