*Sauron arrives and creates the Rings of Power at the end of the First Age
Second Age
*men are corrupted by their greed and gradually dissolve into the Ringwraiths, while the Elven ring-bearers use their magic for good
*dwarves create an exceptionally strong underground civilization, under the reign of their seven ring-bearers
*last alliance of Elves and men, battle with Sauron (Isildur, Elrond)
*Aragorn raised by Elrond
*Gollum happens upon the One Ring, as does Bilbo Baggins
Third Age
*Gandalf the Grey sends Frodo of the Shire on a quest to destroy the One Ring
*Fellowship of the Ring created at Rivendell
*Elven magic is gradually deteriorating, Elrond fears for Arwen's life because of her choice to reject the Elven immortality in her deep-set love for Aragorn
*Elves begin to depart for the West
*One Ring is destroyed by Frodo Baggins
*Aragorn, Isildur's heir, reclaims the throne of Gondor
Grey Havens
*remaining Elves depart to the Grey Havens, leaving Middle Earth under the rule of men
*also departing with them: Gandalf the White, Frodo Baggins, Bilbo Baggins
