"I'm late, I'm late, I'm late, I'm late," I muttered, sprinting down the halls, and skidding around corners. I almost bumped into a teacher.
She shouted something at me, but I had to ignore her, not wanting to be anymore late to my first class than I already was.
The room numbers flashed by very fast before I got to the one I wanted. I heard a voice from the otherwise silent room.
"The feeling that passed between them could only be described as, true love." The girl sighed happily. She'd make a decent author I thought to myself. Then, I heard shuffling and Ms. Porter say something to the girl. I worked up my nerve-I didn't realize I was just standing outside the classroom doing nothing-and knocked. The snappish reply came after the door had swung open
"I know you're a prince Benjamin, but honestly." I rubbed the back of my head and smiled sheepishly.
"I'm sorry Ms. Porter. It won't happen again." I gave her my best I'm-sorry-and-I'm-sure-you'll-forgive-me smile and waited for her face to soften. Instead, she looked at me with an unimpressed look on her face. I flinched.
"Take your seat young man. I expect it not to happen again." I turned and quickly scanned the room.
I got quite a few funny smile, and pats on the desk next to them from various girls and one...boy(?) in the class. But one empty spot, or rather the person it was next to caught my eye.
The cold November light spilling in from the window highlighted her ink black hair, making it gleam. When she realized I was looking at her, her strange beautiful grey eyes became wary, and then indignant. I felt my face break into a grin as I almost trotted over to my new seat.
"Hey!" I said when I sat down, and bumped her shoulder with mine. "We get to be seat buddies! Isn't that great?" She stiffened and slowly turned her head to face me.
"Yes. Fabulous." Her voice was soft, and pleasantly rough. But she sounded... a little angry.
I tried tuning in to what the teacher was saying-something about monkey's and ox's- but I was thoroughly distracted by my seat partner.
There was almost a glow about her; she appeared wise, intelligent, and sophisticated. The way her eyes flicked back and forth between Ms. Porter and her paper... the way her eyes contrasted with her olive toned skin. She was hard not to look at; everything about her was so elegant.
My thought's were interrupted by a book landing with a 'Whump' in front of my partner and I. The pages flipped open, and she stood up pushing in her chair, as was everyone else.
While she took the time to scan the assignment, I observed the room, trying to ignore the growing pool of dread in the bottom of my stomach. Cauldrons were flying from the shelves, and landing on tables. Strange smells filled the air, and colorful smoke spiraled out of said cauldrons. Then I realized that I should probably be helping my partner. Nearly choking on my spit as I swallowed, I walked up behind her and read over her shoulder.
A Recipe For Holiday Fear Cheer
My partner furrowed her brow and seemed not to understand. I leaned down, trying to get a better look at the page.
"Move." she said, turning her head to send me a piercing glare. I couldn't help it; I smiled. For one so small, she sure knew how to sound commanding. And just so she knew that I knew she was joking, I patted her head. This was the wrong thing to do.
"You know," she said, squirming around a little, so she could face me. "Just because you're royalty, doesn't mean I'll refrain from causing you bodily harm." I stared at her, almost in shock. Was that a threat? She was too funny! Now, I just have to learn her name... Does she look like a Jenny? No too common. Whitney? ...No. Dana? That's another girl in this class. Her name was probably as beautiful as she was. Hm.
"Yes you will." I put my arms on either side of her on the desk, leaning forward, enjoying our current position more that I probably should. She just fed the fire, the little Siren, by putting her hand on my arm and leaning forward.
"Are you..." She looked up, her eyes twinkling mischievously. "Sure?" I wasn't really sure what she was getting at when she shocked me. Pure electricity rocketed through my body. I steadily became aware of a burning sensation in my arm, and I could smell the stench of burnt skin.
"Adele!" The boy(?) from before gasped, looking horrified.
"Adele!" A pretty blond girl with a funny accent shrieked.
"ADELE!" The whole class yelled, looking scared. I looked up from my arm to my irritated looking partner.
"You're name is Adele?" She looked like she wanted to hit something. But just then, Ms. Porter came in the room, dragging in a bag full of various sparkling objects.
One girl, Dana (my student tour guide) asked a question to the teacher, and Ms. Porter responded by calling her a Know it All in Gnomish. (Ebetly tyutir)
"Why do I smell burnt flesh?" Ms. Porter sniffed the air. I dropped my arm, wincing, and tried to look nonchalant. She dismissed the scent and then instructed us to get started.
"Alrighty." My partner-excuse me- Adele said to herself. "What do we have here." And I was captivated again. "Hand me my wand." She held out her hand as she was reading through the recipe. The pool of dread in my stomach only grew as I realized that we were going to be working with magic.
"Erm... your what?" I couldn't help but feel a pang of jealousy as I watched her wave a hand through the air and 4 or 5 bottles and jars flew effortlessly toward us. She sighed and turned to grab something out of her bag. She held a black stick, with a mysterious purple aura I could almost feel.
"My wand." She said shortly. "Don't you know what this is?" She asked sarcastically. I looked at her desperately, trying to communicate my message. "Oh, Sweet Grace!" Adele covered her mouth, her eyes dancing with laughter. "You don't know how to do magic, do you?" I fidgeted uncomfortably under her highly amused stare. "Oh..." She smiled to herself. "This is just TOO good! The Prince of a magical country can't even do magic himself!" What? Magical...country? Mother and Father never mentioned... Were they lying to me and my siblings?
She cocked one hip. "What to do, what to do, what to do..." Without even thinking about it, water filled the cauldron, and several items from the containers plopped themselves into the boiling mixture. She tapped her rosy lips with her wand. I watched as the steam gradually turned to a red smoke, and I could smell the faint scent of cookies, and finally said what popped in my head.
"You could... y'know, not tell anyone and..." I paused, wondering if what I was about to say would be too much too soon. "Teach me!"
Adele turned to me, shock clear in her bright eyes. The magic causing the potion to mix itself was cut off.
"You're kidding."
So... today I decided to be benevolent, and add something extra. Annddd I was being lazy and had a good idea and I'm not going to get there for a lonngg time and I wanted to give you a taste of what's coming up so.. Enjoy!
The air around me was cold. The fact that Emele and Dana had dressed me up like a slut didn't help that fact either. The dress the two of them had forced me into was long and sparkly. It's silver-purple color matched my eyes. My hair was curled into ringlets and they had pinned purple flowers in my hair.
"Adele, you look gorgeous!" sighed Emele. "I wish I could look that good in purple." The cooing crowd of females closed in on me.
"Addy," Christina fluffed my hair a bit. "Oh, Addy." Adam walked into the living room, with Elyshia on his hip. He took in a breath.
"Please remember your pepper spray." He said in a near whisper. I laughed.
"You don't have to worry about me." I said. Someone on the door knocked. My heart rate accelerated. I hated being nervous. The floral scent of my light perfume was making me feel dizzy as I slowly reached for the door handle.
"Adele...?" Came his stunned voice. I smiled softly, enjoying the way he seemed to grow more dazed.
"You ready to go?" I asked, and he nodded. He held out his arm, and together we walked toward the car.
