next part of Between Worlds.
“Gah!”
“Be quiet you slobbering fool! She’ll hear us,” growled Arny silently at his stupid companion. How did he ever manage to get paired up with this buffoon?
“Sorry,” Brody grumbled back, quiet this time. “That stupid branch tripped me.” He stood up brushing himself off. How did he manage to get chosen for this stupid expedition? Brody felt his stomach grumbled and he sighed sadly. He was just about to get something to eat right before the Master called out the alarm.
“Can’t we just stop to eat a bit?” Brody asks Arny plaintively but being sure to be quiet. “I’m so hungry. We could go back and get that rabbit we saw.”
Arny stops suddenly, his shoulders tense. He turns on Brody and sneers down his crooked nose at him. “You fool! We don’t have time to eat! Already dawn is but a few hours away! If we can’t find that girl then true death will find us! Master will not tolerate failure on this mission. Either we return with the girl, or we’re dust with the dusk.”
The two traveled silently again together, sniffing the breeze as it slid past, hoping for the scent of the girl. They had been searching for the past three hours, and aside from the rustling of a rabbit, they could find no trace of the abomination. A sickening formation of human and demon; she MUST be kept in control. Who knew what damage she could bring on their dark world? The Master was unwilling to take the risk of her freedom.
Yet, inexplicably, the Master was also unwilling to kill the girl. He never divulged his reasoning among the Lower Vampires. Master kept everything to himself and the few High Ones he kept by his side. Yet, there had been rumors. Arny was never willing to put much stock in them, but Brody was always eager to hear what he could. Just yesterday he heard Willy, one of the younger guards, saying that the girl possessed some sort of power that Master wanted to harvest for himself from the girl but had not yet figured out a way to attain it. Brody wondered what kind of power it could be, and was going to ask young Willy but he felt his stomach growl and decided to head to the red chamber for his meal.
Brody had been lagging behind for a few minutes but found himself nearly running into Arny’s backside when he suddenly stopped. “What did’ya stop for Arny?”
“Shhh! Did you hear that?” Arny said earnestly, his ears straining. Brody looked around and stared into the direction Arny was so intent on.
“No…what’d it sound like?”
Arny did not answer the simpleton. Clearly he was so intent on his fancies and stomach that he had not been really searching at all. Figures. But Arny was sure he heard something. It almost sounded… like… like…a sharp intake of breath. Yes…Arny smirked, like someone who was hiding from sight and just saw her pursuers drawing very close. It has to be the girl.
He glanced over at his obese companion, his eyes slowly drawing over Brody’s protruding belly which no doubt lead to his earlier fall. It was no wonder that Brody was marked, but why in the HELL he was changed Arny would never understand. “The girl is near,” he whispered harshly while pointing towards a clump of bushes nestled near the edge of a harsh cliff overlooking a swiftly flowing river. “The sound I heard came from over there.”
Arny slowly moved forward towards the bushes, while motioning to Brody to cover the other side. To his satisfaction, Brody understood what Arny wanted, and began his slow encroachment upon the bushes. If he his heart could beat, Arny was sure it would sound like thunder in his chest now. Everything counted on the girl being in these bushes. Already he could feel in his bones the sun making its pressing journey towards the horizon. Shaking with anticipation, Arny slowly draws his long silver dagger from the hidden sheath within his breast pocket covering his heart. It glitters softly like the sea reflecting the moon’s light into the vast night.
Brody drew up to the bushes in quiet haste. He just wanted to get this over with. He could feel a slight panic growing in the pit of his stomach as his instincts screamed at him that the sun was approaching. Brody had already circled around the bushes and was coming up the other side when he saw the glinting metal in Arny’s hand. He then realized that he had forgotten to bring a weapon with him. He searched the ground before him and spied upon a rather large branch near the perimeter of the clump of bushes. He smiles satisfactorily to himself and stooped down to pick up the branch. However, when he placed his hand down on the branch to scoop it up, he noticed another smaller hand already wrapped protectively around the branch. Confused, Brody looked up from his bent over position to see a pair of wild eyes boring into him.
