Page Eleven
Solla's heart hammered as she darted into the tall grass. A fox in the nursery! The she-cat saw the tip of its tail slip through as she entered. She hurried over to her nest. Thank the goddess! Her kittens were safe!
She was barely aware of several lithe shapes moving past her. Warriors pursuing the fox. The black warrior Kaymi stopped to ask,
"All the kittens safe?"
Solla was about to nod when a wail of grief sounded from the corner.
"Kala," Liyen whispered.
Kaymi looked over and gasped. Ony two of Liyen's three kittens were nestled in the grass. The black she-cat nodded, and sped off.
Nekan kept his eyes on the red fur glinting in the undergrowth. There had been a fox in camp, and he hadn't smelled it! The tabby cursed himself.
"When are we gonna catch it?" Scaide panted behind him.
They had left the fox's other pursuers behind a while ago. Suddenly, they heard a roar and a yelp. Nekan realized that they were appoaching the black path. The trees parted, and the path apeared. The fox was sprawled in the middle.
"Well, that's it." said Scaide, turning to leave.
"Wait," Nekan stopped her. "We can't go yet. We should make sure that it's dead."
Scaide's emerald eyes widened. "I'm not going out there. You're crazy."
Koryo and Azenek suddenly appeared.
"Did you--Oh." Azenek began, and cut himself off when he saw the fox.
"Hey!"
They turned to see Kaymi sprinting towards them. "Liyen told me," she panted. "It took one of her kittens!"
All five cats stared at the canine body on the path. "So," Scaide whispered. "Who's going to go see?"
"I'll go if you're all so scared!" Azenek blurted before he could stop himself.
Now that the others were staring at him, he realized he didn't have a choice. The ginger-and-white second took a deep breath, and padded onto the path.
The others waited tensly on the side, until Azenek came back, a small, limp bundle in his teeth. He laid it in front of them. "A machine ran over the fox's head. Got 'em both," he rasped.
Koryo turned to leave, nodding at the kitten's body. "We'll bury her back at camp," he murmured.
The padded into the temporary camp, tails drooping. (exept for Nekan, who could hide his emotions better than any cat in the clowder.) Liyen had been waiting breathlessly at the entrance. Her eyes brightened, then darkend when she saw them.
"We're sorry," murmured Kaymi, giving the queen a lick.
Kala was buried by her mother and the other queens, exept for Solla, as one of her own kittens had seemed weak, and in need of special attention lately. Maybe she was partial to him, because he's the one who looked like her, Cowa wondered
Suddenly, a large, ginger tom with white patches strode into camp. He called Merra over and asked her where the clowder's leader was.
"I am the leader," she replied.
"You are camping on the border of my territory," he stated, when another feline voice screeched, "Attack!" and warriors flooded from the camp walls.
Thanks to Greengangster for inspiring the foxie's fate!
