Day One - Car Rides, Gaians and Yuri Got up uber early. Was ready to go to TO by 9:00. Ended up going to Sam's for 10:30 and not leaving untill about 1:30. But oh well. Perks to showing up laterish to a Con? The line-up is nill. Bought our Anime passes and hit the Con. Ran into a grand total of two Gaians, we aren't a very organised people, so it wasn't expected to work out that well. Heartless and Rion were the names of the Gaians. Basically decided to peruse the entire floor so as to figure out what was there before we started buying things. In short, it's just cool to walk around and marvel at everyone's costumes and stuff. One of the stands featured a chick who gave out 'free hugs, kisses for 1$ and would yuri for pocky'. I got my free hug, it was pretty quality considering she had to lean across a table of manga to reach me. And Joseph, who's a bit pervy but that's expected, paid me in pocky to kiss her. I was cool with that, it was good pocky. wink Bought a GIR blanket and bought the remainder of the Chobits series. I was also baited to buy a Jester dool with the line" Come on! This was has a noose that you can hang fetuses from!", I didn't end up buying one, but it was very tempting.
Headed back to the hotel. It was a very nice one, with poofy blankets. Everything was white, hilarious only because we dyed Rachel's hair black that night. Which was rather amusing, I don't know if I'd trust me and Sam to dye Rachel's hair. But it turned out really well and Rach's hair looks cool. It suits her. Went to sleep.
Day Two - Cosplay, Vasquez and Masquerades Got up nice and early (9:00)and were at the Con around 11:00. All cosplayed up. Rach was immediately jumped by fellow Hellsing cosplayers, it was fun to watch them fight over her to take pictures. "No! She's MY master!" After wandering around taking pictures of various cool cosplayers,("Darth Vader bear my children!""ZOMG!It's Vash!" wink moved again to the dealers area. Met up with Brenden and Joseph. Went to the WarCraft area, where this really cool guy talked to us about Warhammer and the like. The conversation eventually moved to Johnen Vasquez, who was making his autograph-signing appearance at 1:00. Cool guy went on about how he was going to hurt Johnen because he was being an a*****e about making Johnny comics. Various funny discussions ensued. He really was a cool guy.
Me and Rach then split with the rest of the guys to stand in line for Johnen. We were there a good hour and a half early, which may have been a bit overzealous. But God were we glad we did so, the line was enourmous by the time it was 12:30 and me and Rach were about the 10th people in line. We'd randomly go into excited mode and discuss how I was the embodiment of everything Johnen hates, being dressed in a GIR costume and all. Decided we didn't care and kept waiting. When Johnen showed up, well he's very sexy in a tortured artist kinda way. Turns out he's really nice to his fans and smiles and jokes aand stuff. Which, when you consider all the prejudged notions floating around, was pretty damn awesome. When it was my turn in line I gave Sam my camera and went to get my autographs. A hilarious conversation ensued. Johnen: ZOMG! I have to take a picture of this. *take picture of me* Me: *grin* Sam: Beccy, damn! You're in the way. Random Guard: God Beccy, what's your problem? Johnen: *while signing* Yeah geez, that's such a typical Beccy thing to do. Me: Hey now! Johnen: *grins and hands me my signed stuff* So he was uber cool. And I contained my giddy moments until I was out of earshot. Basically...meeting him made my weekend. He'll never remember who I am, but I met him and he joked around and was really nice. Me and Rachel made it our mission to go talk to the cool Warhammer guy and tell him that Johnny is not an a*****e. Which spawned another hilarious conversation wherein he expressed how he was going to feel bad for having to hurt him. We made a compromise, only lower body injuries, leave his face and hands alone.
I got my picture taken A LOT. People love GIR, so I was followed by a chorus of hushed "OMG It's GIR"s from random groups of people. A fair few asked for a photo and one girl gave me one of the best hugs I've gotten in a long while. I also got my photo taken with '80's rocker Vash' who's hair was a little wierd, but he has the BEST Vash coat EVER. I took a lot of pictures of other people's costumes, including but not limited too : Red Death, Beeker, Batman, Chi, Plum and a Ring Wraith. The Ring Wraith guy was awesome, he just stood there looking like a statue waiting for rewally buff guys to walk by. Then he'd move towards the and freak the hell outta them. We moved through artists alley a few times. Chatted up this guy selling a comic with heavy Yellow Submarine influences. He made his John Lennon statue sing a little song because we bought his comic. Which was awesome, because he sung it himself. And went all Pete Townsend on his cup of buttons when he was done. It was just too cool for words. Chatted up the Fan Blobs people too. One of them was a Gaian, and she recognized me, which was cool but a bit wierd. Bought a phantom blob and a HP HBP spoiler blob. They were so cute.
We all trekked to stake our places for the Masquerade. Met up with Rion plus some more friends he'd made. Hung out for about two hours, then realized that they'd switched the way the Masquerade worked and we needed to pick up tickets to get in. They didn't cost any money, but you still needed them. Which was a very "Aw ********" moment. Searched around and established that the tickets were all gone. After a lot of walking around and feeling gypped we tracked down two tickets. After debating wether or not we should just go home, Sam and Justin made the very gracious sacrifice of letting me and Rach stay to watch the Masquerade, since we hadn't seen it nearly as much as they had. Especially me, cuz I'd never seen one. Man, they were really unorganised. In a crazy attempt to sit together, Rachel ended up squashed between two of the girls we met. But the Masquerade my ZOMG awesome. The MC, who's apparently been MCing for like 25 years, was hilarious. The skits rocked hardcore, some of them being 'Moulin Rouge - Yaoi style', two skits with 80's rocker Vash and Wolfwood, "GIR gone Wild", "Kickin' it oldschool"(Mortal Kombat skit) and "RO - Offline". The MC was just funny as hell. With such lines as: "MAN, I love my job." "God, your parents must HATE you." "Oh, I know why the people in the balcony are having fun, they're all naked...at least in my mind." "I encourage you all to have your own Ninja." He was just so funny, and the audience made it great. Yelling "Ranch" and "God, you could have at least done it slower!" and other such hilarity that can not be blogged, but must be told. The sweetest thing that happened was a, wait for it, marriage proposal! Yeah, I know! The Joker and Harley were doing their skit and the Joker proposed. It was so damn sweet, everyone was cheering and clapping and it just so cute. Talked with Rion a lot, he was a pretty cool guy, despite being 14. He really didn't look it at all, and seemed quite sad when I told him I had a boyfriend. So he declared himself my fanboy. He was so sweet, I liked him tons.
After the Masquerade was over, there was a spot of panic where I lost Rachel. Okay, a large spot of panic I was really freaked at not being able to find her. To the point where I was crying a bit, but I found her and everything was alright. The girls I met in the line were really helpful.
Went back to the Hotel and crashed for the night. That day I purchased a load of manga, a Mokona plushie, JHM book, Squee book and a hat.
Day Three - Discouts, Tshirts and Happy Showed up about 11:30 this time. The main purpose of coming today was to see the Johnen Vasquez panel. Walked around the dealers area for awhile. I bought a JabberWocky print from the Fan Blob people, it was really cool and so were they so you know. And then we found this stand that did embroidering on the spot. We asked how much it was for costum phrasing. I had to borrow some money from JLo, but it was so worth it, because I now own a shirt that says "ZOMG! Snape killed Dumbledore!" in embroidery. It rocks, I had to go back to the Fan Blob people to show them my shirt. They called me their hero and I was given a free sticker, which I later returned because she only had like 2 left. But the thought was there.
Bought some lunch, which was cool because the Italian guy selling the hotdogs gave me some free french fries.
Went to line up for the Johnen panel. Again, showing up early paid off, because we were 42-46th in line in a theatre that would fit 550. Ended up sitting next to two cosplayers all the way from Nova Scotia. (It's a small world after all *sings*) Was insta-friends with them and the 1 1/2 hour wait flew by talking to them. They were quite cool and we swapped LJ usernames. They're names were Justin and Jen and we concluded that we were way to happy to be in the Johnen Vasquez line, a lot of his fans are all gloom and doom. The panel with Johnen was great. I legitmally spoiled HBP for someone, but it was cool cuz he didn't really care. I took a lot of pictueres and Johnen was just really cool. He was all like "Why do I always get asked the questions? I want to ask the audience questions...you there! With the short hair and glasses! Where do I get my ideas?" He was just great and most of the questions were pretty good. Someone asked the dumb question "Will you love my friend?" to which he said "No, in fact I'm going to hate your friend now." And it was in general a really great hour.
After the panel we walked around for about 45 minutes, Sam bought a Monty Python action figure. We gave out some hugs and left. I'll miss the people I met there. Ate at 'Sushi Time'. Got some Starbucks and drove home, reliving the Con. Returned home at 10:40.
All in all it was a really kickass firsrt Con and I'm already psyched for next year.
