Wings

Not very long ago in a distant place where very few people lived, was a boy. The boy was abandoned, though it wasn't very hard to tell why his parent's had abandoned him. He felt no resentment towards them because folded upon his back was a pair of leathery wings.

He had taken the land's woods as his own and often sat on a large rock near to center of the forest. That day he sat on the rock as he usually did, his legs folded towards his chest, his arms folded over his knees, and his head resting on his arms. He took his time staring at the spot in front of him, though if you saw him you wouldn't be able to tell, for auburn hair fell across emerald eyes covering them.

The rustling of leaves caught his attention and his head snapped up, now fully aware of another presence. The sound of sobbing drifted through the forest and slowly grew louder. Soon the boy found himself face to face with a little girl. The girl had light blond hair and wore a plain white dress, but the boy couldn't help but to stare because upon her back rested a pair of striking feathered white wings. She looked like a fallen angel. He slowly stood up and made his way towards her stopping in front of her. He kneeled down so the he was eye level with her and the girl looked up at him with eyes as blue as the sky. She sniffed and then without a second though launched herself at him crying onto his shoulder.

The boy was startled but held the girl close while ruffling her hair so that she would calm down. "It’s okay. Calm down now and tell your big brother what’s wrong." The girl sniffed again before she pulled away from him slightly so that she could see his face. "M-my daddy!" she choked out, "He left me a-alone!" she started to cry again and he hugged her closer. He knew that she would need it, just as he did so long ago. Yet, he never was comforted, he just realized one day that they weren't coming back for him and knew that it was time to stop the tears and move on. "Hey now...don't worry, I'll take care of you." a girl so young couldn't possibly survive out here on her own.

"But first," he said, giving her a reassuring smile, "What's your name?" the girl had stopped crying and smiled for the first time since he had seen her. "I'm Anne!" she said throwing her arms up in the air happily. "Alright then Anne, I'm Ruu" the girl looked at him questioningly but didn't ponder it for long before she noticed the wings that he too had. "Big brother Ruu is just like me!" she exclaimed jumping up and down happily. He allowed himself to smile again while he watched Anne dance around; it had been a while since he had seen any living thing. The wildlife in the forest feared him as much as anything else would. She was different. He watched as a bird swooped down from the sky and flew around her as she spun. In all honesty he was starting to believe she was an angel.

He turned slightly too looked at his dark and unwelcoming wings stretching them slightly so he could see them better. He hated his wings.
