I've had about enough of people causing themselves damage then expecting sympathy. Really, it's incredibly pathetic.
You know that unsanitary conditions and under-cooking can make you sick.If your hands are dirty and you're handling food which you're using to prepare dinner for yourself, you haven't washed the floor in days. Then you drop the food, apply the '10 second rule' and still cook the food. You continue to cook the food for a time less than it's supposed to be cooked and it's still half raw because you're in a rush to eat. Then you proceed to eat your dinner which was prepared in less than sanitary conditions and get food poisoning. I think you deserve it and also deserve to get much less sympathy than you're going to end up with since you caused it yourself.
Just the same with smoking. You know you can get gangrene, heart problems and lung cancer from smoking. But you smoke and continue to do so throughout half of your life-time. Then you get lung cancer and suddenly it's 'oh, why do these things always happen to me?' and you go looking for sympathy. For god's sake. You deserve nothing but what you've gotten.
If you smoke and drink whilst pregnant, you deserve to lose the baby-you're unfit to be a parent.
If you go into tanning beds and expose yourself excessively to the sun, you deserve skin cancer.
If you go and do something despite the danger and risks, you deserve what you get.
That's my final word.
