The first gods summoned two divine beings into existence, the male Izanagi & the female Izanami, & charged them with creating the first land. After creating their home, Izanami died while giving birth to Kago-Tsuchi (fire) & the grief stricken Izanagi buried her on Mt. Hiba.
Izanagi then went to Yomi, the dead land, & found his late wife. At first, he could not see her because of all the shadows, but, he still begged her to return to him. Izanami spat out at him, informing Izanagi that he was too late.
Izanagi used a torch & saw her features. What was once his beautiful Izanami was now a decayed & rotten corpse, teaming with maggots.
Izanagi ran to the entrance of the cave being chased by the corpse of his angered wife. When he reached the light, he covered the mouth of the cave with a boulder & from the other side of the barricade, Izanami swore that she would kill 1,000 of his subjects a day! He furiously replied he would give life to 1,500.
