The Forgotten Jewel

Part 1
The Dream Land
This is a story about a girl who found the greatest treasure in Egypt only to have it taken away in the blink of an eye. This story starts the way many before it have: with a once upon a time.
Once upon a time a small girl was born. She was named Katie and she was beautiful. She had soft peach skin, rosy cheeks, soft sky blue eyes, and a full crown of blond almost white hair. She was not like other babies for the gods had already decided what her fate would be. And what an interesting fate it turned out to be.
Katie or Kate as people call her is me, and this is about my life and my adventure. I may exaggerate or blow things out of proportion by I guaranty that this is all true…for the most part.
I lived just outside of main Egypt in the early 1900s and worked in the fields growing rice. My mother and father had long since died so I lived with my Grandmamma.
“Kate time to come in,” Grandmamma called. I ran inside to wash up and change my clothes for today, our old friends the Samuels were coming for supper. Now I have never told anyone this but I have a crush on the Samuels youngest son Rick. He is very handsome. He has wavy black hair, is very muscular and a strong chin. He is also very tan because he works in the fields all day. In truth, he-is-dreamy. Yet his eyes are the best part about him. When he looks at you his light brown eyes seem to look into your very soul. I had just finished putting on my tahowa (ta-ho-w-a), a traditional dress that you wear during dinner occasions. As I was coming back from my room we heard a knock on the door, telling us that our dinner guest had arrived. I opened the door and bowed to the oldest Samuels.
“Please come in, supper will be ready in a moment.” I said. As they flowed into the room I noticed that Rick kept turning his head to look at me. Also he wouldn’t sit down until I did. “Hmmm” “This could be promising” I thought to myself. Ever since I was little my grandmamma taught me how to attract the attention of the man you wanted and how to repel the attention men you did not want. I smiled at Rick as he sat across form me, not really looking at him more like looking up at him through my eyelashes.
“Enough of that come and get your dinner.” My grandmamma said. She was standing in front of us and it was then that I, we noticed that everyone was at the table eating. They were paying no attention to us although the younger sister Silver was watching us with great interest. My face turned bright red and Rick and I rose to join them. I am not easily embarrassed but when I am my face will stay red for hours, so the rest of the night I ate with a red face. The meal was eaten with little fuss and the Samuels took their leave. After they left my grandmamma and I went our separate ways to take care of our own needs and get ready for bed.
That night I had a dream. I was walking in a circle. Just walking going around and around. It felt like I was going nowhere just digging a deeper and deeper trench. It was as if I were in the desert with thousands and thousands of miles of sand before me. And as I walked I made a deep hole, just one hole with a space in the middle because I did not walk in the middle. I would walk and walk until the wind blew and the sand would cover my hole, and soon I would die although my body would still move forever going in a circle for all eternity. I woke up, sweat pouring down my body. It was a sign. The dream was a vision of something that had happened, will happen, has just happened. Death, death is the answer. I ran to my grandmamma’s room and found her asleep. I crept up to her and stood above her body. My breath quickened and I ran from her room screaming in terror. She was dead. My dear sweet grandmamma was dead. So I ran, and ran, and ran, all the way to the Samuels house about 15miles away from where I lived. When I got there I pounded on the door. The door was thrown open by one of the family and I almost fell to the ground. Instead I fell against a solid body. I looked up to find Rick staring at me with concern in his eyes. I buried my face in his shirt and started to cry. Really cry, I let all of the feelings that were haunting me come out as I cried. I did not talk and did not notice when my feet left the ground. Rick had picked me up and carried me into the house. He set me on the couch in the living room. There I curled up in a ball and wept until I fell into a restless sleep. The sleep however brief was enough to calm me down so that I could tell the Samuels what had happened.
“My grandmamma is dead, and now I have no place to stay and no reason to live.” I said my voice cracking on several words. As you can see when the time comes I can be very dramatic. Suddenly I found myself surrounded by many arms; in fact the whole Samuel family had come over to hug me. I looked at the arms that were holding me tightest and followed them to the face they belonged to. I smiled a wet and weary smile into Rick’s face and felt the rest of the family let go. Only Rick’s hands remained and I shifted in them to get comfortable. I was just falling asleep again when he picked me up and carried me to the room his sister slept in. He laid me down on the bed, kissed my forehead and left the room. In the mist that filled my mind I heard a voice.
“Kate” it called softly. “Kate!” my eyes opened the next time it called because there was such force in it that it made my head pound. When I opened my eyes I was not in Silver’s bedroom but in a castle bedroom like the ones you read about in fairy tales. Now I am going to go completely out of the story line to tell you about this castle. For one it is floating, like in mid air. For another it would seem that it is a real castle not a dream one. I know this because I can pass right through the people in this castle but not the castle itself. Actually the only time I tried I stubbed my toe. Anyway back to the story, sorry for the sidetrack just thought you should know.
I walked around that castle for what seemed like days. I just couldn’t figure out why I was there until I met Prince Michel in the royal chambers. I was looking for the kitchen and ended up in his bedroom. He was sleeping with his crown next to him and a book lying on the ground. I admit I was curious. Who was this strange man and why did he have a crown. I walked up to him and because I knew nothing bad could happen; or so I thought; I ran my hand across his head. But my hand did not go through him. Oh no, instead I ended up poking him in the eye. How could I poke him in the eye when I was running my hand through his hair you ask, simple he moved just as I touched him. He woke with a start and I ended up on my butt. I seem to be doing a lot of that but I cant help it when people are startled so am I, which usually ends up with me on my butt. I guess I looked very guilty as if I had just committed a great crime and had come to turn myself in. This is exactly what he thought.
“What crime is so great girl that you must wake me from my nap to tell me about and, gods help me, beg for mercy from?” He asked in a very bored voice which said that he would rather be sleeping even though he would never say it to my face. Even if I was a commoner; I look up at him and slowly shook my head. I had to shake it for a while because; he didn’t see that I was shaking my head right away.
“Why are you shaking your head commoner?” he asked.
“You do not understand I do not belong here and you should not have been able to feel my touch. Actually I was walking through everyone else so I have no idea why I can touch you. In any case I have done nothing wrong.” I explained. He looked at me as if I were crazy.
“You expect me to believe that you can walk through someone in my castle and can still touch me, you must be mad.” He said
“If you do not believe me then have one of your savants come and stand before me, then I will walk through her or him.” I replied.
“Fine, you maid come stand in the middle of this room.” The price called. I looked over at the maid he had called and realized that she had been standing in the room for quite some time. She was looking at the prince as if he were crazy; she was also trying to figure out who the prince was talking about. I smiled because I knew that she could not see me, and I would and could still walk through her. I looked up to see the prince staring at me. The expression on his face was unreadable so I gave it not thought. In fact if I had I would have seen that in his eyes was a hint if laughter as if he found it all funny.
“Fine, now maid just stand were you are. Do not move until I tell you to.” The prince commanded.
“Y-yes s-s-sire” she replied. Just by the way she replied you could tell she was scared and a little freaked out. I walked up to her, shot a glance at the prince, and walked right through the girl. The only indication that I had gone through her was that she asked if the room had gotten colder as I passed trough.
“You may leave now.” The prince told the maid and she gratefully left the room. “How did you do that?” the prince asked.
“I do not know.” I replied. “I came into this place in a dream and have been walking through people all day, and you were the first person I could touch much less talk to. Who are you anyway?” I asked tilting my head to the side.
“Humph, why should I tell you anything commoner?” the prince asked.
“You don’t, I know you are a prince of some sort by the crown.” I said pointing to the offensive object. “I’ll just leave but since I don’t know how to get out of your castle, if it is one, then I will just have to roam around until I wake up or do something I shouldn’t.” I turned and started to walk out of the room. Looking over my shoulder I glanced at the prince just in time to see him make up his mind and look up. His eyes caught mine and I smiled at him before turning back toward the door. “Five, four, three, two…”
“Wait miss could you please come back here for a moment?” the prince called
“Bingo!” I thought. In the spit second that our eyes met and held I saw that he was not about to let me leave.
“Fine I’m coming but only on one condition.” I said.
“Oh, and what would that be?” He asked.
“You have to promise not to be so rude and start acting like the gentleman that you are.” I replied. Smiling the prince held out his hand.
“Very well madam.” He replied. I held out my hand and was very surprised when instead of shaking it as I thought he was going to do he bent his head and kissed it. He raised his head and immediately started laughing.
“What is so funny?” I asked every bit of embarrassment that I felt put into the edge of my voice. I had never had anyone kiss my hand and I thought that, that would be something Rick would do not some stranger.
“You … looked… so funny I-I couldn’t help I-it.” He replied really trying to stop laughing. He had never met a lady who after reprimanding someone had not had her hand kissed as an apology. Or so he told me afterward.
“Well, I have never been so, well disrespected.” I stated walking over to the bed and sitting down with my back toward him. Because I did that I did not notice the way his face changed from teasing to confused and then thoughtful. I did not see him walk over to the bed but was suddenly thrown backward so that I was lying down on the bed. The prince was bent over me. For a moment neither one of us spoke. Me, because I was shocked that he had ever dared to touch me much less throw me backward on the bed. **The prince was thinking that even though she was upside down she still looked wonderful;this mystery girl that had appeared out of nowhere and could turn his world upside down in the blink of an eye. The perfect person to make his life a little more interesting.** The prince sat staring at me for a good five minutes before he bent down and lifted me so that I was sitting up again.
“I am so very sorry; I don’t know what happened to me just then.” The prince said. He got up and started to walk away. Now I was wondering why he was humble all of a sudden so I did what I had to do. I grabbed the back of his shirt until he was the one lying on the bed. I am not a well behaved girl and I am certainly not a well mannered girl so at the risk of him righting himself and walking away again without a word; again; I did the only thing I could think of at the moment, well I sat on him. Yes I sat on him right on his stomach so that he could not get up. Actually it was not until he started to get up that I even thought about sitting on him. Now I am embarrassed to even think about it.
“What are you doing!?” he asked. I think he tried to act angry, but with me on his stomach it was near impossible.
“I am sitting on your belly.” I stated.
“I can see that what I want to know is why?” he asked.
“Well you did just fling me backward, say you’re sorry, and then start to walk away. From what I know about you which isn’t much you usually do not say you are sorry easily. Also now I am kind of wondering what made you flip my in the first place.” I replied. Shifting I looked down at him and noticed for the first time that the prince was not that bad looking. He had light brown hair, blue-green eyes, and it looked like when he smiled he had dimples. He also seemed pretty muscular but that was by sitting on him so I really didn’t know. He was watching me watch him so I felt and knew when he reached up and ran his hand through my hair. My eyes closed with bliss. The only thing that I like better then mushu (a type of candy) was the feel of someone running their hand through my hair. Heck I do it just to make myself feel good. It might be weird but don’t knock it until you try it. Then you can come back and call me strange. So when the prince ran his hand through my hair I was in haven, and of course I didn’t notice his other hand move. So I was really scared when I was lifted in the air. I clung to the prince’s neck for dear life. It was only after about twenty seconds that I realized the prince was holding me firmly in his arms. Slowly I looked up into his eyes and watched him smile very very slowly. I was right he did have dimples. Cute little dimples that made his face look like that of a five year old with a new toy.
“Could you put me down now?” I asked embarrassed all over again.
“Sure.” He said and setting me back on my feet, he took my hand and led me over to a reclining chair in the corner of the room. “I have a few questions for you, and I can imagine that you have a few for me also.” The prince stated sitting down next to me.
“Yes and ok you go first” I said.
“Fine three questions. First what is your name? Second can you explain why you think you are here? And third were do you come from?” the prince asked. Then he sat back and stared at me waiting for his answers.
“My name is Katie but Kate to my friends. I do not know how I got here all I know is that my grandmamma died, I found her, then I ran to a friends house and they put me in a room to sleep. When I came to I was on the floor in a bedroom in this castle. I was exploring when I came upon your room. Actually I was looking for something to eat, a kitchen of some sort. Finally I come from the eastern part of Egypt just outside of the city.” I replied then leaned back ready for the storm of questions that I was sure were coming.
“I just want to say that you are a long way from home and that I am truly sorry about your grandmother” the prince said. If he had said that when I first met him I would never have believed him but now I felt or knew that he was telling the truth.
“Can you tell me were I am them?” I asked.
“Sure you are about 800 miles north-west of main Egypt in the kingdom of Greece and it would probably take about three days to get back to where you live even you went by horse.” The prince answered.
“Ok that makes getting out of here near impossible. Now it is time for my questions. First what is your name? I know you are a prince but what is you name? Second what do you think the reason for me being able to walk through everyone but you? And last my last question is a personal one so you do not have to answer it. Do you want me to leave?” I asked. For some reason when I asked the last question he got really quite and sat up straight. I started to feel that his answer would not be what I had thought it would be. Looking straight at me the prince said
“My name is Prince Michel but you can call me Michel. I think that the shock of your grandmother dying has sent you here. This kingdom is known for the relaxing air. Whoever sent you here must have been trying to help you. The reason you can walk through people is because you are really still asleep.”
“But that doesn’t explain why I can talk and touch you.” I replied.
“Yes, but maybe you were never meant to. I may be able to see and talk to you because I am supposed to help you while you are here.” The prince, I mean Michel answered.
“Lastly I have four words for your last question. Do not leave me.” Michel said. Taking me in his arms and giving me a great big hug. “You need to rest and what better place to do so in the castle of a friend. Besides you have not even sent the whole castle so you need to see that before you leave.” Michel said.
“By the way two things, do you think you could let go now, and how do you think I will get back without going on horse for three days?” I asked after he had let go looking slightly embarrassed.
“Well you got here by sleeping right?”
“Right.” I replied
“I think that the way for you to get back is to fall asleep here.” Michel replied.
“That is a good idea I don’t know why I didn’t think of that.” I replied.
“That’s because you are not a genius like me.” Michel stated pushing out his chest.
“Oh boy here he goes again.” I thought. I got up and walked to the door waiting at the door so that Michel could catch up. Together we walked out the door and roamed the castle having a jolly good time. We saw everything and I found out that the castle is not floating. It is actually placed on the top of a mountain so you see the clouds go by. That must have been why the castle was floating at first. When we got back to Michel’s room I was spent.
“I think I might take a little nap.” I said.
**** “Ok, oh wait if you fall asleep you might go back to…” Michel turned around just in time to see my body start to fade away. “You can not leave now!” Michel cried and ran over to where I was.
“Leave her she will be back.” A voice said. “I as a god promise that she will be back.” Michel looked back over to where I was and saw that I was no longer there.
“She better be back.” Michel said to the air. “I think I love her so she better be back.” With that he fell down into a slumber that was so deep that he did not know when the maid found him on the ground and ran for help. All he could think about was Kate and were she was. ****
Part 2
The Curse
“Kate, Kate you need to wake up. There are many things that you must still do.” A voice said. I opened my eyes to see that it was not a voice but Mrs. Samuel that was calling me. “Come girl there is much to do.” Mrs. Samuel said. Then she turned and walked out of the room. I tossed back the sheets to follow her only to find I had no cloths on. I quickly went back under the covers and called for Mrs. Samuel to bring me some cloths. I had thought that Silver or Mrs. Samuel herself would bring me my cloths, but no Rick was the one that brought them.
“Um thank you but could you please get out so that I can put them on.” I said
“Oh, sure no problem.” Rick said and hurried out of the room. I put on my cloths which wasn’t much. I guess that the cloths that I ran over with were dirty because I was now wearing Silver’s dress and cover shirt. I walked into the family room and sat down on the couch waiting for someone to tell me what was happening. Everyone was running from one place to another all talking at the same time. While I was trying to figure out what was going on Rick came up took me by the hand, and led me away without saying a word. When we were outside we went around the house and stopped. Rick turned so that he was facing me and then crushed me in his arms.
“I am so sorry. I can see why you were asleep for such a short period of time. You were really restless you know. I thought you were having a nightmare. Please do not go to see your grandmamma.” Rick said. All these thing were said while I was I his arms and they came tumbling out of his mouth like someone had just turned on the faucet.
“Rick calm down, slow down, and turn around.” I said. He did as he was told and saw that I could see my house from the way we had been facing. It was on fire. My beautiful house with all my possessions was on fire! I couldn’t believe it; they had actually set it aflame. Why would the people I trust do something so horrid while I was asleep?
“What-What are they doing to my house?” I screamed. I took off running toward the house that had sheltered me from everything only to be caught and thrown over Rick’s shoulder.
“No, no what do you think you’re doing all of my stuff is in there.” I said.
“No it is not we got all of your stuff and brought it here. I need to tell you what we found when the men went over to get your grandmother to bring her back here. I can only do that if you are calm.” Rick stated as he dumped me onto a chair.
“Fine tell me all you want but you better make sure I know why the hell my house is burning down.” I said twisting in the chair so that I did not have to look at him.
“Kate look at me please.” Rick begged. I turned in my seat trying to keep the tears out of my eyes.
“Tell me what happened while I was asleep. Please do not spare me the details I can tell when you are lying or keeping something from me.” I said. It was a bluff, but not entirely. For Rick I do know when he is keeping something from me, but not when he is lying.
“Fine, here is the story but don’t say I didn’t warn you. After you went to sleep my father and I went over to your house to get your grandmother and give her a proper burial as soon as you woke up. When we got there were snakes, roaches, beetles, and a number of other things coming from your grandmother’s mouth. When they saw us they gathered on the floor and made letters. They said:
“Tell Kate to find the lost jewel from the stories then burn the house.” We did not know what to do so I figured that we should do what she told us to. We thought that you would be awake when we got back. Well there you go that is why your house is burning to the ground.” Rick said. He sat back and watched me fidgeting as if he were going to get up and run away. I looked at him and then starting laughing.
“Grandma you sly dog you!” I exclaimed. I couldn’t believe she would do that much less tell others to tell me something like that, it was outrageous.
“What are you talking about?” Rich asked looking very taken aback.
“Oh, I am very sorry but my grandmother can be very sneaky when she wants to be- I am just realizing how much so- just now.” I gasped for breath. When I had calmed down enough I told Rick of the jewel from the stories.
“My grandmamma would tell me the story of the jewel of the queen of Egypt. She said that who ever possessed the jewel would be able to rule over all of Egypt. Of course it is just a myth but I think she thought it was real, and she wants me to find it. In the right hands it could save Egypt from a terrible fate or so the legend says.” I explained. Moving off the chair I started to pace around the kitchen. ‘I wonder why she wanted me to find it. Unless she thought it was in trouble!’ I thought. Gasping I turned to Rick. “Rick I think that the jewel is in trouble. I think my grandmamma wanted me to find it so that I could keep it safe.” I exclaimed. Turning I started to exit the room only to be caught by the arm. I turned back to look at Rick to see that he was trying not to laugh.
“What, why are you laughing there is no time we have to leave.” I stated pulling my arm from his grasp.
“What are you thinking, and why is it that you suddenly believe in an old myth?” Rick asked still trying to stop laughing and sound serious at the same time.
“I told you I think that the jewel is in trouble. Plus if my Grandmamma had thought that it was just a myth why would she have brought it up. I believe her and I am going to try to find what she wants me to. Even if- even if I –I die trying” I stated putting my chin up. Turning swiftly I marched away. When I was outside I headed for my burnt down house. Halfway there I felt another presence. It was not as if someone was trying to follow me without me knowing, but as if someone was trying to communicate with me from far away. ‘Michel! He was trying to get to me. But how, how did he know that at this moment I wished I had never left his castle.’ I thought silently.
‘Michel if you are there try to say something, please I need you.’ I pleaded in my mind.
“I am here though it is very hard to hear you. Kate it is so good to hear your voice again. I thought that I would never see you again. What is wrong all of a sudden I felt a strange pain in my chest and then knew that you were in some kind of trouble?” Michel responded.
“Oh, oh thank goodness, I don’t know what I was going to do. No one will believe me but I know that if you do not believe me it will be because you have thought about it from my point of view right?”
“Of course but what is wrong?” Michel asked again.
“Well you see my Grandmother left a note if you will for me. It said that I was to find the forgotten jewel, a sacred jewel from the stories.” I explained
“Oh you mean the jewel that can control all of the people of Egypt?” Michel asked.
“Yes, yes that’s right. How did you know? Oh never mind just as long as you know that if the jewel is in trouble and that I have to go save it.” I exclaimed. Although I wanted him to believe me I really wanted to know about the jewel when Rick didn’t.
“No, do not try to do this by yourself. If you can wait three, four days tops I will help you.” Michel said a very serious note in his voice.
“Thank you, thank you so much.” I whispered into my head. “Do you know that if you were here right now I would just kiss you?” I said
“In that case you might…umm…want to turn around,” said a voice that was not in my head but behind me. Slowly I turned around so that I was facing the one person that I wanted to see most. Standing there looking completely surprised yet vaguely pleased, stood Michel. With a cry of happiness I ran into his arms, forgetting all the ‘proper’ things that I was taught about approaching men. He scoped me up into an enormous bear hug. Let me tell you to be caught in a bear hug is both painful and wonderful at the same time, if that makes any sense.
“I am so glad to see you. How did you get here?” I asked. Putting me down Michel started to blush to the roots of his hair.
“What, what were you thinking about that sent you here?” I asked an impish smile starting to form across my face. Slowly Michel backed up until he was far enough away from me so that I could not grab him, then he turned tail and ran. Chasing after him I got close enough to grab his shirt and repeated the movement that had landed him on his back the last time. Only this time I went down with him. We ended up in a big tangled mess on the ground. Gaining an advantage point I sat on his stomach (again) and waited for him to spit out what he was thinking about.
“Ok, ok you win I will tell you. But under one condition which is I will not look at you.” Michel said. “I- I was thinking about the fact that I wished I were with you now so that-so that I could…umm…get that kiss.” Michel stammered.
My heart softened along with my eyes. He saw my eyes and became very embarrassed. Pushing me off, I let him, he started to walk away. I ran up to him and grabbed his arm making him stop. “You may have your kiss, but not because you said that is why you got here so fast, but because I want to give it to you.” I whispered. Our lips slowly closed the space between them until our kiss bloomed like a flower. It was wonderful like someone giving you ice cream when you are sick. Then we heard yelling, and pulling apart we saw Rick coming toward us.
‘Uh- oh’ I thought. As Rick got closer we could see that he was yelling something. As he got closer still we could make out what he was yelling and it was not very pleasant. If I remember right he was yelling
“Get your grimy body parts off her you no good filthy …” well you get the point. When Rick reached us he grabbed me by the waist and placed me behind him. I was very upset.
“What the hell do you think you are doing?” I screamed into his ear.
“Protecting you from this person; what else” Rick replied. I moved past him to stand next to Michel who was finally figuring out what had happened. When Rick had taken me I think he was a little shocked. Anyway when I went to stand next to him his arm circled around me possessively.
“Kate do you know who this is?” Rick asked.
“Yes I know him. His name is Michel and I went to him after my Grandmamma died.” I said ‘I had a feeling that Rick would get mad at this and strangely I welcomed his anger.’
“What you know this creep. And what do you mean you went to him when your Grandmamma died. I thought you came to me, and besides you never left the house.” Rick exclaimed
“That’s what you think, you are so wrong. When my Grandmamma died I did fall asleep in your sister’s bed, but when I woke up I was no longer in your house. Instead I was in the bedroom in his” jabbing a figure in Michel’s direction “castle. I walked through everyone until I got to him. When I touched him he could feel me when no one else could.” I explained. Michel’s arm around my waist pulled me tighter.
“When no one here would believe her about the jewel…” Michel scowled in Ricks direction “She called on my help; I believed her and offered to help her in her quest. How I got here however is none of your business.” Michel said sharply because it seemed as if Rick were going to ask him that very question.
“Fine but could you at least come back to the house because my mother is very worried about you and your health. Not to mention that you have no idea were to look for the Jewel so the least you could do is come back to the house and think things through.” Rick asked pleading with his eyes.
“Fine but on one condition, Michel has to come because I know you were not extending that invitation out to him.” I said. Putting my arm around Michel’s waist I turned him in the direction of the house and started to lead him toward it. As I got nearer I noticed that the whole family was waiting outside. You could see that Rick had told everyone where he was going when he can to find me. Silver was paying the most attention, and there was a curious sparkle in the corner of her chocolate brown eyes. I had noticed that when she looked at me with Rick there was coldness in her eyes but when I was with a stranger there was a tender curiosity. When we got to the house Mr. and Mrs. Samuel gestured into the house and turned to go inside. We followed with Silver behind her parents and Rick bringing up the rear.
“Please sit down Kate and introduce us to this young man.” Mr. Samuel told me.
“His name is Michel actually his real name is Prince Michel from the castle. He is here to be with me and help me on my quest. We will be leaving as soon as we have a plan and an idea of were to go.” I replied. At the sound of the word Prince the family bowed except Rick who only bent his head and continued to glare at Michel.
“So what is it that you are looking for and why do you have to get it?” Mrs. Samuel asked.
“I think I can answer that.” Michel said. “You see the message that her grandmother left is a message to Kate. She thinks that her Grandmother knew that the jewel was in trouble and wanted her to find it. The only problem is that she does not know were it is. That is what we are trying to figure out.” Having said this Michel leaned back in his chair and stared right back at Rick a smug grin playing across his face. I could tell already that these two were going to have some major problems. Latter I found out I was right, but I’m getting ahead of myself. If I do that a lot I can not help it this story is to good not to skip around.
“Do you have any idea were you would get that kind of information that would even give us a little hint of were you need to go?” Mr. Samuel asked. At this point Rick couldn’t stay quiet any longer because he exploded. (This may also be because he lost the staring contest with Michel.)
“Do you mean that you believe that there is some kind of jewel like that exists? And that you are going to let her go off by herself to try to find that crazy thing?” Rick exclaimed. Everyone stared at him watching to see if he had anything else to say on the matter. You see Rick more times then not was right when it came to things like this so everyone including myself wanted to know what he had to say.
“What do you suggest we do Rick. If you have any idea what to do please tell us ,but know that she wont be alone because I’ll go with her.” Michel stated staring at Rich challenging him with his eyes. Rich looked very confused for a moment then started to ponder. While he was thinking I was thinking as well. There was something I was forgetting because I knew that grandmother would never leave me with nothing to go on. Finally it dawned on me, the thing we needed was right here with the rest of my stuff.
“I know were to get the information. Rick were did you but the stuff that was in my room?” I asked.
“Um…. I think it is in the family room why do you ask?” Rick asked. Everyone was staring at me and asking the same question with their eyes, and I was about to answer if what I wanted was indeed in the house. I got up from the table and went to the boxes that were piled next to the chair in the family room. I finally found what I was looking for and came back to the table where everyone was waiting carrying a very heavy book. Setting it down on the table I wiped the dust off and read the cover. Myths and Legends by M.K. Stilling was written across the top.
“This is the book that grandmother told me would one day answer all my questions. I hope she was right.” I said. Opening the book to a marked page I saw a very welcome sight. The page was titled ‘The cursed Jewel’ and as I looked at it I realized why it was called this. On the page was a poem that read:
Follow the river north
Through the marsh
Across a thousand miles of
Sand into the forbidden land
Ask the one who doesn’t know
Which way to go; answer the
Riddle be prepared. Trust yourself
Do not be scared. When you
Reach the cave inside you’ll
See, THE JEWEL of DESTINY.
Beware of the thing that can not be seen
The curse will fall upon
All of ill will
Search for the stone but remember well
Who the curse will affect only time will tell!
Everyone read in silence until the last person was done. Looking up I met Michel’s eyes and then Rick’s, and finally the rest of the family. “Well there you have it we know were we need to go we just need a few supplies, a good nights rest, and permission to go” I said in a steady voice even though inside I was really creeped out. How could my Grandmother have known that the book would tell such things? “Fine you may go but you must be careful Kate. We do not want to lose you like your Grandmother.” Mr. Samuel said. ***Getting up everyone went their separate ways to get some much needed rest. Michel would sleep in with Rick and in the morning we would venture into the unknown in search of a legendary jewel. And to top it all of there was the curse that would hang over us the whole way there and eventually drive one of us to do something we would regret.***
Part 3
The JourneyPart-1
As I woke up the next morning I rolled over and thought about the past days events. Getting up I walked up into the kitchen and started to make breakfast. At home I would get up and make breakfast for Grandmother and myself; I missed those times. Soon everyone was awake and gathering around the table.
“Thank you so much for making breakfast. But you really should eat up yourself today is a big day for you.” Mrs. Samuel said. The whole family was looking at me with sorrow in their eyes; everyone except Rick who looked very happy about something.
“What are you so happy about this morning?” I asked him
“Nothing important,” He said “But you should know that I will be coming with you on your trip to keep an eye on a certain person in your group,” He said looking at Michel who had just entered to room. Sitting down next to me he looked at Rick with a stare that could burn through metal.
“What’s this about coming with us? You didn’t even want Kate to go much less come along with us.” Michel stated leaning forward. “Why would you want to come when just last night you were telling me that you would not allow Kate to leave your house? Would you mind explaining what is going through your head because I do not want to be traveling with a lunatic?” Michel exclaimed.
“A lunatic you dare call me a lunatic why should I even listen to you!” Rick shouted.
“Enough! Cut it out you two are acting like a bunch of children” I yelled. I push Michel’s shoulder until he was sitting in his chair then I did the same for Rick. Standing over them I looked like an enraged mother.
“What do you two think you are doing I can’t believe you would act so foolish especially you Rick. You should know better what have I taught you.” Mrs. Samuel demanded. Rick put his head down on the table and began to mumble something.
“If you’re going to say something say it for gods’ sake. What is the matter with you boy!” Mrs. Samuel exclaimed.
“She can’t go with him because he doesn’t deserve her. I’m going to keep an eye on him and on my…” Rick stuttered to a stop. Looking around he quietly excused himself from the table and went into his room. I looked around the room to see that everyone was stunned by his outburst. I got up and surveyed the room.
“I think I will go and talk to him. And, no you can not come with me Michel.” I told them as Michel began to stand, “I’ll be right back I’ve known Rick for a while and I know he will talk to me.” With that I exited the room and after a quick knock let myself into Rick’s room. He was lying on his bed with one of his arms thrown across his face. I sat next to him on the bed and waited for him to look at me. When he didn’t I began to talk, “Will you tell me what’s going on. You never use to act like this so you better tell me what’s up.” I stated. Rick looked at me then turned away before he began to speak. Man, when he did start to talk he talked and talked and pretty much shocked me into silence.
“You don’t know what it is like. I walked actually ran after you to tell you that I was sorry, and that I would go with you to find the jewel. What do you think it did to me to see you in the arms of some-some morbid man when you could have been in my arms; you could have listened to me you know. Instead you yelled at me and left my side to go to his. You kissed him after all the things you’ve done to me I would have thought that you liked my even if it was just a little crush. God Kate do you know what you’ve done to me; I’ve fallen for you, fallen pretty damn hard. And what do you do you take my heart and well tear it to shreds then stomp on it.” Rick said. He said all this with his back turned to me. Knowing me you should know what I did next. No? Well then I’ll tell you, I flipped him over so that he was staring at the ceiling and then… I sat on his stomach.
“Who do you think you’re talking to? Dummy I’m your best friend, don’t you dare turn your back to me and then drop a bomb like that into my lap. You could at least look at me because I’m not getting off your stomach until you do.” I screamed into his face. He turned his head so that he was looking straight into my face. What he saw must have been pretty darn funny because he started to laugh.
“How or what are you laughing at you do-do brain. You have nothing to laugh a-ump” I cried. Right in the middle of my speech Rick sat up and I tumbled off his stomach…and landed on my butt on the floor. I looked up to see Rick peering over the edge of the bed. When he saw that I was o.k.; though I was really annoyed by this point; he sat up and started to laugh harder then ever.
“I-I’m s-sorry i-its just so f-funny, I really did-didn’t think y-you could g-get s-so m-mad,” he stuttered, “I’m sorry for dropping such a big “BOMB” in your lap its just, I can always talk to you. I just didn’t mean to tell you that.” Rick said. He got out of the bed and then after helping me up gave me a bear hug. I smiled into his face and then taking his hand lead him out into the family room where everyone was seated.
“I’ve decided that Rick will be joining us on our trip. I hope you don’t mind Michel but I really think he should come with us” I said pleading Michel with my eyes to say it was o.k. He looked at me for a split second before saying,
“If you think it is best. You are to be the leader of the quest so you are in charge.” He said the got up and went into the kitchen.
“Here you should sit and talk to your parents for a minute while I make sure he is o.k. Don’t worry I’ll be right back then we can all prepare for the next days events,” I said then turning to Mrs. Samuel I spoke again, “I hope you don’t mind that we may have to stay with you another day Mr. and Mrs. Samuel.” I said.
“It’s no problem; I want you guys to be rested and ready for your adventure.” Mrs. Samuel said with a smile. I walked out of the room and into the kitchen to see that Michel had gotten himself a cup of milk and was staring at the glass when I walked in.
“Why do we have to let him come along? He is just going to be a lot of trouble and I don’t think we should be bothered by something or someone like that.” Michel grumbled still staring at his cup. I walked over and tapped him on the shoulder. When he looked up I sat down on his lap and said into his face,
“I do hope that you are not jealous, besides the more the merrier. Anyway he told me that he loved me and I’m a real softy for stuff like that, but,” I bent my head and kissed him on the cheek, “You are the one I love so he will just have to get use to it. So stop moping and come in the family room. We have to decide what we are going to bring, as of this moment I am naming you 2nd in command on this “Quest” as you call it.” I said. I kissed him again this time on the lips and got up, walked into the family room, and sat down beside Silver. Michel came soon afterward and we discussed what we should or should not bring. Actually Rick was a lot of help, whatever Michel forgot Rick remembered so between the two of them we got together a pretty full list. In the end it was Silver that suggested the most important thing for our list.
“Don’t tell me you guys are planning to carry all of this stuff,” she said, “You need some horses to rid on and/or maybe a carriage and a couple of oxen to pull around all of the things you want.” She stated. In the end we ended up getting some horses and two camels to carry our stuff. When everything had been decided we each retired to our own rooms. It was during that time that Silver dropped another bomb on my shoulders.
“I can’t believe you are going to chose Michel over my sweet brother. What kind of women are you. One minute you are flirting with my brother the next you are kissing some man in our kitchen.” She hissed at me. It took about five seconds for me to realize that she had said I was kissing Michel in the kitchen.
“Why you little sneak. I can’t believe you were snooping on me and Michel, what we do is our own business. You would do well to keep you nose out of places it doesn’t belong. Anyway why do you care who I pick, if I don’t pick your brother then what are you going to do about it.” I sneered right back at her. For a moment she looked like someone had just smacked her. Then her face changed entirely, it turned into a smug grin that was both sinister and knowing.
“If you know what’s good for you you’ll do what I say, I know what your weakness is. And I know just who to tell to completely ruin you. Do you really think Michel would want a –well you know for a girlfriend?”She sneered. All the color must have left my face because she started to laugh. Man I hated when people decided to blackmail me. Especially with that,~ Here is the deal for a while I was a prostitute and I got pregnant. The son of some drunk man who raped me and didn’t pay up. No need to say that he is no longer with us at the moment. The baby is not with me but I don’t know if he is dead or not. The only reason why Silver knows is because she and her mother helped me through the pregnancy. The only other person who knew was my grandmother and needles to say she is dead. Well there you go my one and only blackmail point and weakness. ~“You want to bring that into the mix, fine then I’m going to play on your weakness. You do that and I will disappear, then Rick will be very sad and I will leave a note saying that you are the reason why I had to leave. Do you want to be responsible for making your brother very, very sad?” I asked her. She shook her head and looked at the ground. “No? Then I suggest that you don’t bring that into this. You know what will happen if you do.” I whispered. With that said I rolled over in my bed, bid her good-night and went to sleep. When I woke up the next morning I was glad to be alive. I walked into the kitchen and waited for the others to wake up. It didn’t take very long and after a hearty breakfast we were ready to leave. As we started out all was quiet. I don’t know why no one spoke, maybe it was the exictiment or maybe it was fear but whichever it kept the group oddly quiet. Michel was the one to break the silence.
“Hey, Kate do you think you could say the poem again so that we know where to start?” He asked
“Sure give me a sec.” I replied. Clearing my throat I began:
Follow the river north
Through the marsh
Across a thousand miles of
Sand into the forbidden land
Ask the one who doesn’t know
Which way to go; answer the
Riddle be prepared. Trust yourself
Do not be scared. When you
Reach the cave inside you’ll
See, THE JEWEL of DESTINY.
Beware of the thing that can not be seen
The curse will fall upon
All of ill will
Search for the stone but remember well
Who the curse will affect only time will tell!
When I had finished we all sat trying to figure out what it could mean.
“I think it means that we need to follow the Happachi River north until we reach a march” I said. I looked at the boys and could see that they agreed with me. So we headed in that direction. When we actually reached the river it was dark and we decided that we should camp here and start again at mornings first light. Now I love to be clean when I go to sleep so I told the boys that I was going down the river to take a bath. I also told them that if either one of them tried to peak he would be sent back to the house the next day. They got the point, but they started to laugh as soon as I had left. I hate when people do that I really do so I decided to play a trick on them. While I was taking my bath I really saw something in the water so I screamed. Both Michel and Rick came running and soon we found out that it was just a fish and that I shouldn’t be scared. The whole while, while they were helping me they kept their eyes averted so they could not see me. I was grateful but decided to have some fun. As I was following them out of the water I ‘fainted’ right at the waters edge. I could hear them arguing it went something like this:
“Oh my god what just happened!” Rick yelled
“Hey dummy don’t look at her that’s just wrong. Go find something to cover her with.”Michel said
“And what, let you stay with her and do who no’s what while I’m gone. No way you go get something for her.”Rick said back. I could tell that he had crossed his arms. (I peeked at them I couldn’t help it. Sometimes boys were just fun to watch.)
“Here take off your shirt and give them here. I-we will cover her with your shirt and use my shirt as a sling to get her back to camp.” Michel suggested.
“O.k. but why don’t you just carry her?” Rick asked as they started to work on me. I mean they tried not to touch me and they didn’t for the most part, things were getting warmer by the second.
“I thought if I suggested something like that we would just argue for the next hour and Kate would probably get really cold, or wake up so I figured the faster we got her back to camp the faster she would be able to rest,” Michel said, “If you don’t mind I’ll carry her and we can head back to camp.” Michel said.
“You’re right if you had suggested it I would have argued with you, but um,” He stopped, shuffled his feet and went on, “I think you are stronger then I am and it’s a pretty far way back to camp so I think you should carry her.” Rick said. He stood back and let Michel move forward. I felt arms go around me and I was lifted and carried back to camp. As soon as my back hit the blankets I “woke up” from my nap. Michel and Rick were staring at me, with worried expressions on their faces.
“Man did you give us a scare. What happened to you back their. We thought that you were dead until we say that you were breathing!?!” They shouted in my face. I sat up and started to laugh. Getting to my feet I first kissed Michel on the check then Rick.
“Oh thank you so much for worrying about me, but really I am fine. I need to go back and get my clothes though. Oh and Rick, after I get my clothes you can have your shirt back.” With that I started to walk away, but I glanced over my shoulder to see them both fingering the place I had kissed. ~In case you didn’t know, most boys are cool and well cool. My boys however are a little bit dumb, yet very cute. Oh well, beggars can’t be choosy I suppose. ~
The next day we set off. The little “accident” the day before seemed to have brought the boys closer together because they didn’t fight once. I looked back at them a couple of times to see that they were talking but every time they caught me looking they would stop. To me that was weird since they told me everything but I didn’t complain. We stopped at a village that was halfway between the marsh and Rick’s house.
“I’m going to go look for a store we are running low on water already.” Michel said as he moved off in the direction he thought was right.
“I’ll take the animals to the part of the river that they can drink from. You know that around villages the water is always really dirty. You stay here, don’t move and Michel should be back soon.” Rick said. He moved off with the animals in tow. I was not happy; I mean I can take care of myself so why did I have to stay put. I hated it…so I went exploring. I didn’t go very far just down the street but that was far enough to get my in a lot of trouble.
As I was going down the street I could feel someone following me. At first I wasn’t worried; you know I was thinking that they just lived this way. Boy sometimes I am really dense. Five more steps down the lane and a pair of arms circled my body and a hand came down over my mouth before I could scream.
“Don’t move,” a muscular voice hissed in my ear, “or you’ll be in big trouble little miss.” The man dragged me to a nearby house and knocked on the door three times. It opened and he dragged me into it. By this time I was pretty mad so I started to struggle. In the end I ended up bighting his hand. He let go long enough for me to scream long and loud, but eventually the hand came back along with a cloth. They drugged me! I can’t believe they did it but after three sniffs of the cloth I was out like a light. I figure I was out for about an hour or so before I heard someone calling my name. I opened my eyes to see Michel looking at me. They had tired me up and put me in a spare room.
“Jesus Kate, didn’t Rick tell you to stay put. You decided to wonder off and this is what happens to you. You know it pays to listen to us.” Michel said as he untied me. I sat up robbing my wrists and looking around the room.
“You said something about Rick where is he by the way?” I asked getting up.
“Oh, he is in the other room taking care of your ‘boyfriends’.” Michel said with a chuckle. We stepped into the main room and saw that Rick had tied up the men and tied them to a chair. He looked and smiled.
“Good to see you aren’t truly damaged…yet.” Rick said with a bigger smile.
“Yet?!” I couldn’t help but ask.
“Yeah, what do you think was going to happen to you when we came to save you, after I had told you to stay put?” Rick asked starting toward me. I turned to bolt but Michel was in the way.
“Mick move before I….” I started to say but never finished because Rick had come up behind me and lifted me off the ground. Throwing me over his shoulder he moved out of the door. Michel came behind him grinning at me like a monkey.
“So what is going to happen to my kidnappers?” I asked.
“We told the village police so they will come and pick them up later. You have no reason to talk little miss, you are in too much trouble to be asking questions.” Michel said with a teasing grin. I smiled back and settled down on Rick’s shoulder. Little did I know that they had planned something ‘evil’ for my punishment. Now I have to tell you having Rick and Michel come to my rescue was pretty cool but if anyone drugs me ever again: without my permission: when I wake up I plan to beat the hell out of them.
After a few minutes we reached the horses and camels. Rick set me on my feet and we headed off. Not even half an hour into the ride the boys decided that we needed to stop.
“Stay right here we will be right back.” They said. Then they practically ran over each other to get out of my sight. You would think that I would suspect something but I was totally clueless. After about ten minutes I decided to go exploring in the surrounding area. I moved toward the bushes when I heard a twig snap. Spinning around I came face to face with a small elephant. I stood stock still when it raised its head and charged. I turned tail and ran as fast as my legs would carry me. I made it back to the animals and hid behind a horse’s flask. Looking over its back I saw nothing.
“Michel! Rick! Get back here right now or I’m leaving without you!” I screamed. In a matter of seconds they were at my side trying to calm me down.
“Hush, hush girl what has gotten you so shaken?” Michel asked trying not to laugh.
“Yeah, what happened to you? Ohhhhhh.” Rick asked then grinned. “I know what happened to her. She went ‘exploring’ and something scared her.” Rick said turning to me with a questioning look in his eyes.
“Well is it true. Is what he said true Kate?” Michel asked.
“It might be true but could you guys not leave me anymore since you now know that I can not be trusted to stay in one place.” I said. They looked at each other and burst out laughing.
“What? What is so funny?” I asked really confused. I think they tried to tell me but they were laughing so much that they didn’t make any sense. After ten minutes I gave up trying to understand them and started loading the camels with water and other things that had fallen off in my mad attempt to get behind a horse. I felt a hand on my shoulder and turned to see Michel and Rick smiling but no longer laughing.
“Are you planning to tell me what in the world is going on or should we just leave to get to good camp ground in time for night fall?” I asked. I crossed my arms over my chest and stared at them until they began to shift uncomfortably. Turning away I swung myself onto a horse grabbed the reigns of a nearby camel and headed into the direction of the river. I heard the sound of their horses and was not surprised when they pulled along either side of me. Michel put his hand on my arm and pulled our horses to a stop.
“We have something to tell you. Don’t be too mad at us we thought it would be for your own good, but we were kind of wrong.” Michel said.
“We decided that as punishment we would scare you while we were on the trip. In the town we were in Michel got an elephant skin and we used it to think that there was a real elephant chasing you. We never meant to scare you so much just shake you up a little. We are really sorry and hope you forgive us.” Rick said with his head down. I was shocked; I couldn’t believe that they would do something like that to me. Of coarse I was angry but they looked so cute with their heads down looking shameful that I had to forgive them.
“O.k. I forgive you, on one condition.” I said.
“We will do what ever you want ‘what ever you want’” Michel said while Rick echoed him.
“Fine, the condition is you have to sleep in the sand for three days. Not in the tent, not on a sleeping bag, nothing. You must fend for yourself for three nights then I will forgive you.” I said with a sly smile. Then I slapped the horses back and we were off again. The boys didn’t make a sound until we reached the place were we would spend the night.
“Kate when you said we had to fend for ourselves did you mean with food too?” Michel asked quietly.
“No, I’m not that mean you just have to sleep without anything. So come over here and help me prepare dinner. Rick would you get the animals tied down then fetch me some water. I’m planning to make soup tonight so I will need the water.” I said starting to make a fire in the sand. That night we ate a good meal and all went to sleep with full stomachs. The next morning Michel and Rick were both stiff but neither had a scratch or bite on them so I figured they had done well on their first night. The next day we found something that could have been good or bad, depending on how you look at it. We had finally come to the marsh, but there was not a living thing to be seen. That was really, really bad.
“I can’t believe this. Where is everyone the marsh had a town in it not to long ago, so where did everyone go?” Rick asked. He started to run in either direction. When he finally came back he looked pretty shaken.
“Nothing, no one anywhere. No matter how far you go it is just marsh. Not a soul anywhere. My grandmother lived out here; I wonder what happened to her?” Rick asked. He sank to the ground and put his head in his hands. I went over and put an arm around him trying to comfort him. Inside my mind a thousand thing were all trying to be heard at the same time. Suddenly I heard a voice a clear voice ring through my head.
“Turn around then turn back three times. You should not be disappointed.” The voice said. So I did what it told me to do. By the third time I was dizzy and the boys were looking at me like I was crazy but what I saw made me scream.
“Oh my god, oh my god what is that, no get it away, keep it away from me!” I screamed, I was going crazy and the boys did not have any idea what was happening to me. Michel put his arms around me and moved me away from the marsh, the farther away we got the more I calmed down.
“Tell me what is going on Kate!” Michel yelled into my face.
“T-turn around th-three times then look at the m-m-marsh.” I stammered edging away from the cruel place. They hadn’t seen what I saw, thousands upon thousands of bodies. Some were eaten, old and moldy. Invisible birds and insects had torn away at the flesh and bones of the bodies. I heard one of the boys scream. I opened my eyes to see Rick scooting along the ground toward me, Michel was stumbling after him.
“God, I didn’t- why didn’t, you could have told, my God what happened.” Rick asked. He was talking so quickly that it was impossible to understand what he was saying.
“Calm down, slow down, sit down.” I said directing the boys until they were in a sitting around me. “Somewhere in that wasteland is a man who will tell us how to get to the jewel. Now I want you two to sit here and calm down while check out the marsh again. It can’t be as bad as it seemed.” I said getting up and walking back to where the animals stood. As I got closer to the marsh the sense of dread overcame me. The animals felt it as well, although they could not see the marsh clearly. They were uncomfortable and fidgety, almost like a small child in church. As I reached the animals I looked around again. Suddenly a figure ran across my vision. Something dropped out of his hands as he ran. Gulping I headed toward the object that the man had dropped. I picked up the object; a small container with a scrap of paper inside; and headed back toward the boys. As I reached them I began to wonder who the man could have been and if he was the person we were looking for.
“Hey guys, there is a living person here. He dropped this as he ran past me but at least he ran.” I said sitting down next to Rick. “There is a piece of paper in it; do you think I should open it?” I asked them. Both nodded their head and Michel scooted closer so that he could see as well. Twisting the cap of the container I opened it. As it opened it made a popping sound that made all of us jump. Taking the paper I read out loud:
Sam Maxion Hillfore
Medium of the Marsh
Lives in hut on North side of Marsh
All Welcome
(Come if you dare)
I looked up to see the boys looking across the marsh.
“I think he dropped it on purpose. Maybe we shouldn’t go it could be a trap.” Rick said standing up. Michel stood up as well but I stayed on the ground. I was thinking and I did that best when I was sitting down. Finally getting up I dusted off my pants bottom and headed back toward the animals.
“I think we should go but we will not ask him about the jewel. Remember the poem: Ask the one who doesn’t know; I think that if this guy is really a medium then he would know wouldn’t he. Anyway I want to do what we have to do here and get out. This place is giving everyone the creeps and I don’t know about you guys but I can hardly stand it.” I said getting on a horse and moving in the direction the paper had said the medium lived. I heard the boys coming behind me. ‘Boy I hope this doesn’t end badly’ I thought. Little did I know we would barely escape with our lives.
It took us over an hour to get to the cottage. By the time we reached the place we were pretty scared.
“Did you see that women. She was planting something when she died. She didn’t even move from where she was kneeling.” Michel said as we reached the house. Rick and I nodded our heads and we all dismounted. I went up to the door and knocked three times.
` “Come in Kate, Michel, Rick don’t be shy, I have been expecting you.” A hoarse voice called out. I looked at the boys surprised that this person knew our names; then I slowly pushed open the door, and we entered the house. I walked up to an old man sitting in a rocking chair and knelt.
“Sam, I assume,” I said taking the mediums hand, “we are on a quest as you may already know, and we are hoping you could point us toward ‘the one who doesn’t know’.” I asked. Sam looked at me strangely then his eyes glided behind me; looking at Michel and Rick I suppose; until his eyes came to rest once again on me.
“You are looking for her. Sarah is my sister and let me warn you now, you can not lie to her. She can and will read your mind, looking into your deepest thoughts and wishes
