THis is part of a short story that will be a bit of a promo to a bigger story known as Cadets- A Sci fi Story that has been brewing in my head for some time. THe Cadets were the branch off of a story that I have been writing in not books over time known as the The Hubris. THe Cadets consist of the Childeren of the officers or stragglers that they pick up on the way....THis short story consists of one such operation that Yellow Squad (Aka The Amber Hawks) are sent on. Here is the first part of many
A constant feeling of nervousness passed between the young women as they sat down feeling the tension pass among them. They were no strangers to the world of combat, each of them had been through a baptism by fire in one way or another ever since signing onto Yellow squad and becoming members of the Amber Hawks. There pilot was a scarlet haired violet eyed beauty in her early 20’s by the name of Nora Riddle. Nora or “Riddles” to her friends was the daughter of General Joseph Riddle commander of the HMS Hubris, the largest space battleship ever built in her life time. She had lived a simple, sheltered life and practically had to beg to get onto a field team even though she had earned her worth several times. As the drop ship readied itself for docking procedures she handed off the controls to her copilot then moved back to arm herself. Her fingers gently ran across the armory door as she opened it before starring back at her team, an all-female task force made up of her closest friends.
“Thank you for joining us Miss Riddle.” The major stated. “Now grab your gear and take a seat, I have a mission plan to go over, the ship were docked with is an Ancient Haltessian Knight ship known as the Rapture of the Dawn, our resident expert might be able to tell us a little more.” Nora’s glance changed to the pale skinned member of their team Elana Keltaz. Only at seventeen the pale brown haired emerald-eyed alien was by far there best hand to hand expert and their native speaker of the Halteese language, which helped them when dealing they usually had with the Halteesian military or culture. Elana slowly sat up at them before speaking.
“It was about five years before the invasion when I first heard the tale of the Dawn, she had a malfunction in her main drive core and it caused her to jump into unknown space never to be heard from again.” Nora could easily sense the worry in Elana’s voice. There Co quickly changed the topic
“The ship has been derelict for five years now so there’s no telling what went on during that time so Hubris command and control sent Red Squad onboard to scope out the ship…needless to say we have yet to hear anything from the Red Squad’s Falcons since they went in and there drop ship was found floating outside the ship.” He sat down in the center of the floor and looked at them. “This is a straight search and rescue mission, we go in, we find the living and we get out, no bodies be it there’s or ours come back, sorry” Nora looked at him her eyes scanned him in hopes of it being some kind of joke it wasn’t one. She looked the rest ground using her knowledge of her friends to try and feel what they were thinking. Her eyes centered on Taylor Rybac first, a Marine cadet who was a year older than Nora was with shoulder length dark strawberry blonde hair and hazel eyes. By the team classification Taylor was a brawler always the first one on point and always totting heavy caliber weapons around. Her eyes then shifted to Jacqueline Rexer, the second red head of the group. The young blue eyed girl was the team’s walking encyclopedia so to speak, with all the knowledge and facts that she would shoot off between missions. Jacky’s passion was science but had been know to do a little commando work now and again. Her gaze shifted to the last two women in her squad, Nancy Bennett and Jessica Shilo Lavance. Though Nancy looked as human as everyone else did she was actually an alien. The auburn haired alien had eyes that were like polished topaz in every way and was a hell of a sharp shooter. It was said that she could smell her target from five miles away then end their movements with a single bullet. The last member of the squad was their medic Jessica. Jessie was the foster daughter of one of the higher ups, which explained why the two of them looked nothing alike and had been wanting to join the military just like her foster mother for the longest of times. Rarely seen with anything but a side arm Jessie was a decent shot and favored the Beretta over the standard issue glock of the Hubris personal. There was no way she could leave any of them behind ever.
“Sir that doesn’t seem right” Nora stated. The CO looked at her and glared at her in a way the made Nora feel as though she was being cut in two. He moved to her, getting so close that Nora could smell the foulness of his breath, apparently this man had been born in a land without the knowledge of breath mints.
“Well Miss we are at war you hear me?” he growled “and If I feel that we can’t take on baggage then I will happily leave you behind on this mission do you hear me” she nodded in disgust “good glad we had this conversation.” He turned towards the cockpit and yelled. “Time to contact!” he waited for a second then the pilot’s voice could be heard.
“30 seconds, god be with you!” he yelled. Nora took the initiative and quickly loaded her weapon prematurely and primed it. Even through her gloves she could feel the cold kiss of steel on her fingertips. She glanced around spotting everyone else’s weapon choice. Taylor hoisted a Type 81 Chinese assault rifle currently loaded with a duel drum clip while Elana finished loading an M-4 shotgun and priming it. Jacky’s MP-5 and Nancy’s M-4 were already loaded and ready to use at a moment’s notice while Jessica finished setting up her pistol. The hypnotic sound of guns loading and priming filled the close confines of the small ship with an rhythmic clash as they get to there feet and approached the hatch leading to there objective.
“Yellow Squad Amber Hawks, Helmets and respirators on, we don’t even know if the air is breathable on the other side of this door.” The major yelled. “When you move into the ship find cover as fast as you can, Elana, Taylor” the two girls shot to attention and looked at him “if there are rooms within 20 feet of the airlock, I want them cleared before we move the rest of the squad in do you understand.” The two nodded then the Major looked at the others “good get ready to move.”
